My hip

I wake up nearly every night with shooting pains in my left hip which radiate down to my toes. I get the pains in my right hip too, though not to the same extent. Eight years I began having pains in my right wrist, it was agony to use that hand. I was tested for arthritis and nerve problems but nothing was found. The doctor just gave me anti-inflammatories and sent me on my way. Now I have pains in my hand when it is cold out, and cannot support nor hold any weight with it. My hip problems began about a year ago and are at their worse when I am lying or sitting.
Can anyone shed any light on this before I try my luck at the docs again?

it could be your ciatic nerve? best bet is to go to the docs.

The back pain thing does sound like sciatica/lumbago. I had a slipped disc a few years ago; I couldn't tell if the pain was originating from my back, leg, foot or, erm, 'round the front'. I went to a chiropracter, as the doctor was absolutely usesless. It took a few visits but she sorted it. Best of luck!

Thanks. I feel as though I'm due a hip replacement... mmm, shiny new plastic ball and socket... bliss.

Sounds like siatic nerve problem. Doctors probably won't help much. There are several stretches that can be helpful. Also, I found yoga helped more than anything. Nothing's made it go away completely, though after over a year.

See an orthopedic guy, he could tell with just an x-ray that my hip was shot. (the pain!) I had my left hip replaced...it's great... titanium no less.

I haven't been offered an x-ray yet, I think I should look into that, thanks.
All of my family have suffered from joint/nerve problems and my feeling is that's it's across i have to bear. My mum has been having physio, steroid injections, osteopathy and all sorts for about fiftenn years due to an excruciating pain in her shoulder. It shoots up the back of her neck and knocks the breath from her, but nand it galls me that after all this time the specialists cannot help or even offer a diagnosis.

MRIs are generally more useful than x-rays, but it probably just depends on what your doctor is more comfortable using. Massage might also help, & it's inflamation related, try drinking ginger tea, as ginger is a great anti-inflammatory. (Grate ginger root into boiling water, strain, add lemon + honey.)

Wanted to know if anyone's ever had hip surgery. I've had problems going back to my last spring teaching (2019), when I brilliantly got the idea to push a heavy box of rocks down a hallway with my right foot. Got it diagnosed a few months ago as bursitis; I've been doing some physio, but most of the time it bothers me. The therapist explained what the recovery would be like, and I'm contemplating getting in line for maybe the summer of 2023.

Doing that slightly odd thing of asking health questions on here (I was due a phone consultation today but it never happened): I have right hip pain after I've been sat for long periods (particularly in low chairs) and feel like I'm struggling to weight bear when doing particular movements (putting on trousers seems to be the most obvious!) ... but it seems to right itself. Like, once I've walked ten metres or so, I wouldn't really notice any pain. Anything I should be obviously doing until I get to see a GP?

Google hip flexor stretches and see if that helps.

Hip-hop threads to actual hip threads: four million to one (I stopped scrolling)...I knew this was on the way: hip-replacement surgery in 6-9 months. If anyone's gone through this, let me know. I hate pain. I might make the unusual request that they anesthetize me for two weeks rather than just a couple of hours.

by what metric do they decide to do a replacement? Just the bone is all shot to hell or something?

I'm in kinda constant low-level pain these days... even trying to sleep on my left side to give my right hip a rest

I was x-rayed a year ago, and they said "moderate arthritis." Asked for another x-ray recently, and this time it's "severe." (Whenever my doctor calls me at odd hours, I should run for cover--last time it was a weekend call to tell I had diabetes.) Sleeping is the worst; day to day, it's not too bad.

when I was camping in sweden in July I used this cheapo air mattress I bought on eBay - basically glorified bubble wrap. After three nights on that, my right hip was killing me, with pains shooting down to my calf... really hampered my last few days in Stockholm since I couldn't walk very far, and no amount of tylenol or ibuprofen seemed to help

Maybe this is for the 'ILXors in their 50's' thread lol
