Defend the Indefensible - ROYALTY

In the "Kicking The Horse While It's Down" Dept:

Certainly America has inherited wealth, fortunate sons, etc., but they're bolstered by the American mythos: "When my great-grandpa arrived off the boat in 1805 with nothing but a bandana and a mandolin string blah blah.." thus creating the illusion that all wealth here was created by the sweat of the brow and hard work.

But what can a member of the (dissolved?) House of Lords say? "Well, no, we've been quite comfortable since about 1066 or so, living in a draughty manor house with servants..."

Or: How does the Duchess-Dowager of Shambercrombie justify her existence and her place of priviledge? "Tradition"?

Well, it was created by the sweat of brow and hard work... of slaves.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

but the windsors are NOT descended from william the conqueror, are they? they're the descendants of a bunch of kraut warlords!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 26 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

We've done this already. Now fuck off you anti-Monarchist scum. We tried chopping off their heads. You know what? WE MISSED THEM AND INVITED THEM BACK!!!

(And in another shock horror, you know William the Conquerer wasn't actually even French! He was a NORSEMAN. A Viking. More kraut warlords, yum yum.)

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 26 February 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

if there MUST be royalty, i'd take the windsors over the bushes. any day.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

King Ralph, anyone?

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, was that the Real King in Australia, who Tony Robinson went and found, because Edward IV or someone was illegitimate?

The Windsors don't actually have any political power. Plus, they still cost less money and less thoroughly chewed human souls to upkeep than the Bushes, any day.

I didn't mean this just to be a Bash-the-British thread... Norway, Nepal, Hawaii, Guam, etc, are included...

How would the Prince of Guam DEFEND his position?

andy, Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

if you have the $$ you don't have to defend shit.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

How would the Prince of Guam DEFEND his position?

With a sword?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

However long your family has been wealthy, each generation has to have been at least competent enough not to lose the fortune. This is not a major accomplishment, but it's something.

Stuart (Stuart), Thursday, 26 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That really is clutching at straws.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 26 February 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

money begets money, so if you inherit, you've got a head start. You don't get brownie points for managing not to piss it the entire fortune up the wall.

thirteen years pass...

Interesting piece on defending the indefensible... I have not seen the show being discussed. (Incidentally, I anecdotally found most Swedes I asked... they more or less approve of their own royal family, who generally don't act like painfully out-of-touch boors)
