Certainly America has inherited wealth, fortunate sons, etc., but they're bolstered by the American mythos: "When my great-grandpa arrived off the boat in 1805 with nothing but a bandana and a mandolin string blah blah.." thus creating the illusion that all wealth here was created by the sweat of the brow and hard work.
But what can a member of the (dissolved?) House of Lords say? "Well, no, we've been quite comfortable since about 1066 or so, living in a draughty manor house with servants..."
Or: How does the Duchess-Dowager of Shambercrombie justify her existence and her place of priviledge? "Tradition"?

Interesting piece on defending the indefensible... I have not seen the show being discussed. (Incidentally, I anecdotally found most Swedes I asked... they more or less approve of their own royal family, who generally don't act like painfully out-of-touch boors)
