faking yr own death

when i left the small town i grew up - at fourteen - a rumour went around that i had killed myself - i even got a mention but no poem in the yearbook. i went with it because i thought it was funny. but yesterday, in londontown, i came across my fifth grade teacher who saw me (he was visiting london) - and i think i gave him a heart attack. he asked me if i was related and i said, no, no, that was just a rumour, i didnt really 'die'.

faking yr own death is so wrong.

i am still sort of upset that i did not rate a poem. the football player who took five people out when he was drunk driving and then killed himself got a whole page tribute. pah.

This goes along with the "programmes pulled off TV when someone famous dies the same way, as opposed to no consideration shown when someone you know dies"...

In my high school when kids died in completely preventable ways (playing chicken at night w/headlights off, etc.) they not only got a page in the yearbook but one of those flower-wasting roadside memorials. People who committed suicide were conveniently forgotten.

Good grief Donna - how many people killed themselves at your school??? I don't recall anyone 'doing themselves in; whilst I was at school.

work here at a paper. do obits several days a week. got a call from a man once asking if he could submit an obit for himself, though he wasn't dead as yet. thinking maybe he was terminal i tried to gently ask about the circumstances. turns out he had a daughter in the area that wouldn't speak to him and he thought if she read in the obits that he'd died she would maybe show up for the bogus visitation service and he could mend their relationship. ugh. depressing shit. had to explain to him that it was against policy to do such a thing.

d'oh! no Heathers died (unfortunately). An inordinate number of drunk bored rich kids Darwined themselves out, though.

seems like one of those things that would have been easy to do in the 19th century but would be basically impossible now. have always been fascinated by the concept though. if i ever wrote a novel, it would be about someone who fakes their own death and then what they do after that, but i do not plan on writing a novel.
