League Cup Final (aka how to make my flatmate stop lurking)

What a fantastic game! It was great to see two sides who have really impressed this season fighting an open, attacking match for much-deserved honours.

Paul to thread!!

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 29 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW Mark - I think I fixed your toilet by tightening the screw that attaches the floaty ball thing (the ballcock?) to the arm that attaches to the flush handle.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 29 February 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Fastest thread mutation ever!

That was a far better game than I anticipated... I was with Boro all the way, bearing in mind a friend of mine and her entire family travelled down to Cardiff for the match. I had visions of a last-minute Okocha free kick going in, though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i must say i'm surprised, i honestly thought boro were really actually CURSED FOREVER.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Okocha was the only disappointment.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't not post now, can I?
Yup. I've only been alive 30 of those 128 years but I am now talking to myself in my head entirely in footballing cliches. And it's a fantastic conversation!

Personally I was very happy that Okocha was a disappointment.

Stevie, I hope the talk of Boro didn't trigger the idea of flushing toilets.

Paul Field (foxeee), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I really enjoyed what i could see of it (bad eyes today). I had slightly favoured Bolton, because I really admire what Sam has built with bugger all transfer funds, but it wasn't a very strong preference.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I was pleased to see McCarra agreeing with my 'Allardyce as Secret Dandy' notion in yesterday's Guardian.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

but but but who won?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

middlesborough 2-1.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the league cup's more exciting than the premiership

(this may or may not reflect an arsenal bias)

pete s, Sunday, 29 February 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I have just noticed that I can't spell Middlesbrough, and I apologise for slighting the cup winners in such a way.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It's their own fault for calling themselves "buh-ruh" rather than "bruh" for short.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

it's to try and trick Americans into saying 'bruff'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Personally I was very happy that Okocha was a disappointment

I was cheering on Boro too but there'd be no harm in him trying some frankly ridiculous tricks in the middle of the park, would there? I remember him doing stuff that was just stupid during France'98. Step-overs that sold the entire stadium, blind flicks, the lot. I love that guy, one of my favourite footballers ever.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Did the toilet get fixed?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No :(

I couldn't quite figure out what you meant. The ballcock is on an arm which presses against a nubbin and theoretically stops the influx of water into the cistern. The handle is directly attached to a big round black thing which releases the water into the bowl. I can't for the life of me see anything to turn, screw, twist or adjust that seems to make a difference. Any idea what I'm (not) doing wrong?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I waited Likely Lads stylee for the highlights as I missed the secodn half. I wanted Bolton to win because:

1) I like Kevin Davies
2) They're from the North west
3) Middlesbrough shouldn't have beaten Chesterfield in 1997
4) Middlesbrough shouldn't have beaten Chesterfield in 1997
5) Middlesbrough shouldn't have beaten Chesterfield in 1997
6) Middlesbrough are from the NE (sorry - what can I say? I'm a hata)
7) Bolton should have had a penalty in the last minute
8) Middlesbrough shouldn't have beaten Chesterfield in 1997
9) I got to liking the pictures of Middlesbrough fans crying in 1997 and wanted more.

Not on your nellie (daveb), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Chris!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Dave B on points 1,3,4,5 and 8, but I still wanted them to win, I just don't like Bolton very much, plus I'm really starting to dislike Sam Allardyce.

chris (chris), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"The ballcock is on an arm which presses against a nubbin and theoretically stops the influx of water into the cistern."

"The handle is directly attached to a big round black thing which releases the water into the bowl."

"I can't for the life of me see anything to turn, screw, twist or adjust that seems to make a difference. Any idea what I'm (not) doing wrong? "

Is this the script for Carry-on plumber?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Where the ballcock meets the arm there's a kind of screw - if you tighten this it makes the cistern fill up properly, cos the angle changes. Is that any clearer? :)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

JtN is speaking the truth

chris (chris), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Little Big Sam = most obvious bid to win the hearts of the nation ever?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ie you twist the ballcock itself around to screw it on tighter.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Carry On At Your Convenience, Ken.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, I think I've done that, but maybe not. Do you mean the angle of the ballcock arm is what changes? No water comes out regardless.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oh this happened to me in oxford, is your cistern not filling up? i think i ended up just hoiking away at it with a coathanger until it worked, it's probably the nubbin that isn't going in and coming out properly...

...oh flipping heck, either:

a. Sid James to thread or
b. cis to thread...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Cis is great in Carry On Plumbing, one of my favourites that one

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The nubbin does get stuck, but it makes now difference if you pull it, twist it or jab it.

Where exactly should I be sticking the coathanger?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

difficult to say, i can't remember how i did mine now, must be at least two years ago...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ehh, back up, what happens when you just push the float down?

sid james (cis), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, nothing. Waggling the ballcock up or down makes no difference, as the nubbin seems to be the key but doesn't work. But it didn't work when JtN sorted it out too, so I'm stuck.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

And pulling the pin *out* does nothing?

cis (cis), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(pin, nubbin, whatever you want to call it.)

cis (cis), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is 'nubbin' a technical term?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

for a third nipple, yes

chris (chris), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh hold on, it's all coming back to me...

...the pin/nubbin thing on mine was going in and out without changing the amount of water trickling into the cistern, so i worked out what the pin/nubbin was meant to be pushing/pulling (an uppy downy plunger type thing) and used the coat hanger to hoik at that until it became free of whatever was causing it to stick.

i remember being a little afeared that i'd break it and there would be WATER EVERYWHERE, but i didn't and it worked fine after that...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What a sorry shower of so-called men we are.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

don't get me started on my shower...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, I think I'd have to get internal to find out what the nubbin is pushing. I need to get a plumber in for, ooh, 5 other jobs, so I might as well ask him to sort that out too.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

You do that, honey.

cis (cis), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But but but! Cis, wouldn't you like to come over and waggle my ballcock while pressing my nubbin to see if liquid will come out?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

moderators, please lock this thread, it's over.

chris (chris), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Delete Barry while you're at it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You've really got it in for me today, cabs :(

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

wow he's on a roll!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

not on this one dude, you're double-entendre fest (remeniscent of a young Finbarr Sauders) merely tipped this thread into done-ness.

chris (chris), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Best thread mutation evah.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has gone round the bend.

I like the fact that those two teams played in the Final, that the fans were enthused, and that people seem to be talking seriously about the competition. I am glad for Boro's fans.

I don't like Allardyce or McLaren at all; both are obnoxious.

the bellefox, Monday, 1 March 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I always kind of associate Bolton and Boro together because they were promoted in the same season as my first Fantasy Football team (through the post! How quaint!). I was very pleased with my cheap Boro defenders, for the first half of the season at least, but I think Alan Thompson let me down for Bolton (my friend said he'd score penalties).

I love Juninho, but overally I prefer Bolton for the reasons already stated, and because Sam Allardyce is so ugly.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't change the fact that Boro are 'the team you always forget about when you're thinking through the premiership and when you remember them you feel sort of...nothing'. They *would* win the league cup sooner or later, wouldn't they? I mean it's for teams like them to win. Remember Luton?

And they used to have (snigger) Dean Windass.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I have that same problem good Dr, but with me I'm Fulham-blind.

Dean Windass is great

chris (chris), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when Dean Windass was put on standby for the Euro2000 squad, because of injury worries to A Striker I Can't Remember Any More. How we laughed.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No! He wasn't Matt! Was he? For who?

Was there a Euro 2000 for 'they should have been pub-footballers' teams?

Mind you Chris Armstrong got into a Keegan squad.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

a Windass wind-up?

Matt?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Fowler or someone had injury worries. He never actually made it into the squad.
