So Jack Daniels is going through yet ANOTHER water-downification.

When Jimmy Page was having his picture taken getting dragged onto an airplane back in the 70s, the 5th o' JD in his hands was 90 proof.

When I was old enough to start having older friends buy whiskey for my underaged ass, Jack Daniels Black Lable was 86 proof, and Green Lable (which was avoided) was 80 proof.

You buy a bottle of Jack Black today and that shit is 80, I don't even know if they have a green lable anymore (if so it's probably only 70 proof, like my morning coffee), they sure don't need it. What's next? making pony bottles the only available packaging for beer and charging the same as if it were longnecks?

Cheap Tennessee bastards.

Like Papa Gener says, "You fucked up."

helltime, Friday, 1 October 2004 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, by the way, anyone else go totally impulse shopper and buy an "I Can't... I'm Mormon" t-shirt to wear while wrecking shop at bars?

Hellt, Friday, 1 October 2004 22:14 (twenty years ago)

yeah I heard about this on the radio. the disc jockey said "no biggie, I'll just switch to Maker's Mark", and I think I will, too.

oops (Oops), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I love Jack Daniels to the point where I should own stock, I've downed that much of it.

Fuck you, JD.

that girl you used to know (luna.c), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Fools. It's all about Jim Beam Black. 86 proof. I will literally drink nothing else (besides beer). Somebody offered me a rad Jack Daniels hat once, and I had to refuse it. I'm VERY loyal to the Beam.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Eh, could be wrong (I was drunk), but I thought Jim Beam Black was 100 proof the last time I drank it. Like I said, my memory of that probably ain't, you know...

Also, roger, any Tequila you pay over $40 a bottle for should definetely join your stable o drinks, you can't go wrong. And you should keep a bottle of Czech Slivovitz on hand too, it's good for fighting off cold & flu (that are caused by evil spirits).

You know, variety is the spice of life.

Helltime, Friday, 1 October 2004 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Beam isn't really a Kentucky company anymore, so I don't drink it.

WOODFORD RESERVE, now that's a fine expensive bourbon.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Beam is cheaper, isn't it? Jack has more brand name cache.
Not that long ago, I was at a liqour store register with a 2 liter of coke and some Jack. The guy (not a store employee) who was shooting the shit with the owner took me to the side and more or less said "boy, you ain't doin it right. I've been drinkin' whisky and coke since your daddy was wackin' off to Betty Page posters. Jim mixes better than Jack, and it's cheaper too. You can thank me later." He was right, of course.

oops (Oops), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:24 (twenty years ago)

dudes, it's all about KNOB CREEK

ken c (ken c), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Jack isn't bourbon.

Knob Creek is good but no WR.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:25 (twenty years ago)

but it's called KNOB CREEK! it's funny like

ken c (ken c), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Old Grandad, bonded. 100 proof. That's all you need to know.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:27 (twenty years ago)

some people have knee jerk avoidance to beam. I quite like it. Ive also noticed that beam matches up nicely with pepsi, jack goes better with coke.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Knob Creek is potent and the bottle is flask-esque, ie easy to hold and chug from.

oops (Oops), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:28 (twenty years ago)

ok, old grandad bonded is funny too

ken c (ken c), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Wild Turkey 101, even though it smells like rubbing alcohol.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:28 (twenty years ago)

You shouldn't mix. It makes for worse hangovers and only pussies dilute good bourbon with sodie-pop.

I've been sipping on JBBlack all evening and I can tell you from the bottle it's 86, Helltime.

And funny you mention Tequila - I've been meaning to get into it - but I'm a very picky drinker. No bullshit Cuervo for me. What do you recommend as far as Reposado or Anejo? Really wanna get into some of that shit...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Have any of y'all tried the 'boutique' type whisky that Jim Beam makes? Booker's, Baker's, and one other? Booker's is very potent and way too expensive to indulge in regularly.

oops (Oops), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:31 (twenty years ago)

For tequilas, I like Patron.

that girl you used to know (luna.c), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:33 (twenty years ago)

I had a knob creek cocktail glass but it broke.

I My wife likes the Xmas season, but I just like that during then you get free glassware w/ you liquor.

Right now my Manhattans are Makers Mark, but I keep some Turkey around for those nights when I'm in a Gonzo mood.

Never did the Old Grandad yet, thought about it though. Mabye next weekend...

Bullit Bourbon is okay, and affordable.

There's some vodka that I'm gonna buy someday when I actually get around to drinking the Kutskova and Absolut in my freezer that comes with molds for ice shotglasses. I don't really drink Vodka that much, but ice shotglasses are a neat concept to me.

Tequila, I like Patron, Cabo Wabo, El Tesoro, Don Julio, Don Eduardo, Corazon, and... Like I said, any bottle over $40 you can't go wrong.

Helltime, Friday, 1 October 2004 22:35 (twenty years ago)

Call me biassed, but I can only drink bourbon watered down. It tastes like crap whisky otherwise.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:39 (twenty years ago)

Also, tequila-wise, I usually go for the clear stuff (blanco/silver, however that particular brand classifies it).

Reason being: I shoot tequila. THe clear stuff has less complex taste and a little more fire. It's also cheaper. If I had the patience, class, and respect to buy a brandy snifter and actually took the time to smell and taste the hints of honey, oak, leather, vanilla, tobacco, et c. that aged tequila offers I'd still get the above mentioned brands, I'd just pay a coupla bucks more a bottle and be more respectable while drinking it.

Helltime, Friday, 1 October 2004 22:42 (twenty years ago)

ice shotglasses? That IS cool...

Patron - isn't that silver, though?

scotstvo - nothin' wrong with that. I don't do shots at the bar, I drink Beam and water. That's gooooooooooooood sippin.' Actually, Wifey and I are going to the bar in a half hour. Quick, somebody give me something new to try! Is there any decent Tequila at, say, Applebees or Chilis?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:44 (twenty years ago)

JAMESON

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 1 October 2004 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Well, scotstvo, it's said that you need a little water (or melted ice, depending on taste) to tame the fire and make the actual flavor more prominent.

That's why you don't shoot single malt Scotch, right?

(this is one of those "A New Message Has Been Posted" afterthoughts)

Patron comes in all 3 classifications, or, at least it did a year or two back, been buying other brands lately.

Still good stuff.

Hell, Friday, 1 October 2004 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Shooting Whisk(e)y at all is an accident waiting to happen. To be honest, it's never crossed my mind to add some water to a bourbon and try to enjoy it. It's now on the to-do list. Watch this space.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm more of a malt drinker really, but I just started stocking Woodford Reserve and it's not three bad.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, shooting the w. is kind of a bad idea, I still do it when I'm at a bar and want to get a jumpstart on being an idiot later on. Just ask anyone who was at Heaven and Hell in DC back whenever that was a month or two ago when I was purposely clearing out the balconey for me and my friends by using the worst, creepiest hit-on lines I could think of.

Hellish, Friday, 1 October 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago)

patron silver is lovely. many bars stock it, and it's not much more expensive than cuervo. at this point, the thought of syrupy golden cuervo is enough to make me nauseated.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Makers Mark is le bombe.
Knob Creek is good but overpriced.
Haven't tried Bookers, Blanton's etc.

Wild Turkey & Old Grand Dad are both classics.

My grandfather back in Louisville also drank IW Harper's, Old Forrester, JTS Brown...what happened to all the brands?

Like the man said above, Jack Daniels isn't bourbon.

A few months back, a friend of mine ordered a Jack Daniels in a bar and complained about how watery it tasted. Maybe you're onto something?

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago)

Find--if you can, it isn't easy--Wild Turkey RYE. Mix with ginger ale. You will be happy.

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Can anyone taste the difference in 86 proof vs. 80 proof? (esp. mixed as most peope drink Jack)

I've still never found an alcoholic drink that compares to Crown and water with a twist of lemon.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 1 October 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago)

I drink Makers Mark on the rocks. Some places (like this Applebees-type place I went to tonight called Charlie Brown's) don't have it, in which case I go for the Wild Turkey. I used to drink Irish whisky like Dewers but then decided F that, buy American. I feel manly and I enjoy bourbon more, and that's the honest truth.

I should also add that I don't drink bourbon all night long. I switch to beer after one or two. Does this make me a wimp?

mcd (mcd), Saturday, 2 October 2004 00:51 (twenty years ago)

I have the stolichnaya ice shotglass set. I haven't ever used it though. You should call me sometime or shoot me an email, helltime. We miss you. also I put some funny captions on those pictures from the last night we were all out together. Do you still have my email address on that business card I gave you?

Also, Absolut Peppar & tonic is my new favorite drink. I avoid whiskey for very good reasons as you know.

TOMBOT, Saturday, 2 October 2004 01:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah yeah, gmail, I got your info, But you know me, I go into hibernation at the drop of a dime, (eeks, sorry). I should really try and keep up to date.

No plans for tomorrow, up for anything that costs no money.

BTW, mcd, I personally think that having a hard drink or two and then switching to beer is the best plan. Well, not THE best, because as TOMBOT can probably attest to, if I just start out with only one whiskey drink, it's only a matter of 11-14 beers before I decide that the funniest thing in the world is to shake my ass directly in front of Fecal Jesus's (among others) face (during "I got your money" by Old Dirty Bastard, of course).

Hellish, Saturday, 2 October 2004 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Old Forrester is a bit rougher than most of these, but the price is definitely right. You can usually find it on sale at any drug store in Indiana or Kentucky. My dad always drinks the cheap stuff and he likes this stuff and some other brand called Kentucky Gentleman.

Jim Beam is the mack. The price isn't crazy and it is good with everything. Back when I was a wee lad, we used to open a 1.75 into a pitcher with a pouch of Wylers Lemonade (the pre sweetened kind), a bunch of ice and a bit of 7-up to fill out he pitcher. That lemonade went down like it was made by your grandma, but hit you like your mean uncle.

Makers Mark and Knob Creek are both really good.

Canadians make some pretty good whiskey. Seagrams and Canadian Club are both affordable and go down pretty smoothe. A 7&7 is a great sunny day drink.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 2 October 2004 04:11 (twenty years ago)

i hope everyone here knows that gin is more fantastic than both whiskey and tequila.

bombay sapphire mmmmmmmmmmmm

todd swiss (eliti), Saturday, 2 October 2004 04:34 (twenty years ago)

omg gin is the most horrid things ever invented. nice to find the one person under 80 who drinks it.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 2 October 2004 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Todd and Melissa Joan Hart. That's it.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:03 (twenty years ago)

i am a blast from the past then

i could drink gin and tonic forever

it is truly the only one (out of gin, vodka, tequila, whiskey, et al) that i can drink without cringing

x-post. also, melissa joan hart = strangely attractive now

todd swiss (eliti), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:06 (twenty years ago)

i admit that gin is tainted for me by a baaaaaad experience with Tanqueray, but ugh that stuff is so nasty. Every other hard liquor was invented in order to have something that didn't taste like that shit. Seriously.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:19 (twenty years ago)

oh btw I had some Patron anejo esta noche y eras muy bueno.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:20 (twenty years ago)

jeez, oops, what the hell did you do -- drink a tall highball of straight-up warm gin?

Gin is all about the care & prep, hence the martini .. you need to have the good stuff, and have that shit chilled. and adorned, very delicately, with a complimentary flavor. Olive, lemon peel, drop of vermouth, whatev.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:24 (twenty years ago)

I sent a friend a shot of warm house gin one night as a joke, letting her think it was flavored vodka. She didn't speak to me for a week.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:25 (twenty years ago)

more or less, yeah. took shots with two other people til it was gone. ugh that smell. wretched.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:29 (twenty years ago)

if you can't have it (it being any hard liquor) straight, i don't really wanna drink it at all.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:30 (twenty years ago)

fair enough i suppose, but a nice gin and tonic that is quite cold can get you really fucked really quickly... without all the horrible taste or fire in the throat.

todd swiss (eliti), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:32 (twenty years ago)

A Daresbury Quintessential gin martini, very dry with a lemon twist is a very nice way to get hammered. When I was in my first year of university and 6 nights a weeks of drinking was standard, I found mickeys of Gilbey's gin (super shitty) could be tucked into my pants and taken into the bar without detection, which I would then take into the bathroom and drink all at once. The good ol' days...

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:34 (twenty years ago)

And oh yeah, bourbon straight is good for you.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 2 October 2004 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Considering Knob Creek gave me the worst hangover of my life, I stay clear of it. As a straight down in one shot, Wild Turkey is unbeatable, but Jim Beam White is better to actually "drink". JD's only good for drinking 21s (black(currant) and Jack).

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 2 October 2004 08:13 (twenty years ago)

My parents taught me to drink Jameson, mostly my mom, who is not a big drinker but has this endearing attachment to Jamey cuz some favorite detective of hers likes to take 'wee nips' of the stuff. I've been taking 200 ml bottles of Jack to parties where I wasn't sure about the drink supply and esp. ones where I was, but shit I guess I'll try Beam or something else next time (when??).

What's a good cheap rye that I can get up in New York?

W i l l (common_person), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Jack Daniels is rotgot. Always was. If you want a proper drink and not just to pretend you're a badass rock star, drink Jim Beam.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

No, you don't: 100 proof is 57% ABV, but I wasn't sure if the two scales were directly proportional.
(unless this is one of those stupid things where Americans use different measurements but give it the same name as a British system, of course.)
-- caitlin (wpsal...), October 2nd, 2004 9:34 AM. (later)

it is, so Yes, you do.

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago)

JD isn't proper whiskey anyway.

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago)

or proper whisky, for that matter

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 2 October 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone established what this mysterious liquid actually is?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 2 October 2004 22:16 (twenty years ago)

A terrible headache in a bottle.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Saturday, 2 October 2004 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Dickel. I mean, what?!

Hunter (Hunter), Sunday, 3 October 2004 02:18 (twenty years ago)

Have any of y'all tried the 'boutique' type whisky that Jim Beam makes?

Knob Creek is one of these, isn't it? I could be wrong, but I believe Jim Beam makes Knob Creek. They know what they're doing.

Knob Creek is my favorite bourbon, actually. When I said Beam before, I only meant as opposed to Jack Daniels. Beam is good around-the-house, let's-do-a-shot-right-quick whiskey. It's not for *serious* drinking. Well, I guess depending on how you define *serious*.

And then there's scotch. Oh, my my my. There really should be another thread.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Sunday, 3 October 2004 04:19 (twenty years ago)

Jack isn't bourbon.

Both true and false. Bourbon is officially the sour mash whiskey that comes out of Bourbon County, Kentucky. Beam once did, so Beam would be champagne, and Jack would be sparkling white wine, if you see what I mean. But the catch is that *no* whiskey is made in Bourbon County anymore, making the distinction meaningless.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Sunday, 3 October 2004 04:24 (twenty years ago)

In more recent usage, bourbon comes from anywhere in Kentucky, while sour mash whiskey comes from Tennessee. But as someone said upthread, Jim Beam isn't made in Kentucky anymore either, so even that doesn't hold.

Whatever, man. I'm not going to pine for days long gone or get all provincial or anything. Good whiskey is good whiskey. And bad whiskey is Jack Daniels.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Sunday, 3 October 2004 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Wild Turkey 101

You're a madman. MAD, I tell you!

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Sunday, 3 October 2004 04:39 (twenty years ago)

But as someone said upthread, Jim Beam isn't made in Kentucky anymore either, so even that doesn't hold.

Some Jim Beam is made in Kentucky (by workers who aren't allowed to take pee breaks), but the company is no longer a Kentucky company, and that's why I don't drink it (along with Knob Creek, which is made by Beam).

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 October 2004 06:24 (twenty years ago)

I drank mad alcohol by itself tonight. I just felt bored and put-upon. I think at one youthful point I was a good drinker but endless amphetamines and cocaine have altered my brain's pleasure sensors so that alky by itself just makes me itchy paranoid and complacent, desparate for a bump of ANYTHING less leaden and middling. I think my problem is that I've always been super "all or nothing" re: getting fucked and alcohol never gives me that "all" anymore, not even close, in fact I find drinking a bit quaint. I think I got into Xanax this year because it doesn't give me bad breath and I can do a lot of it in the morning. Abstinence is probably good for me for a while. Whiskey reminds me of my Dad doing embarrassing things so that's why I drink white russians, even though white russians make your breath smell like old cum. I'm too lazy to even chew gum nowanights. Wow I'm rather spoiled and bitter. Detox is excruciating, sorry for venting.

LC, Sunday, 3 October 2004 06:55 (twenty years ago)

white russians make your breath smell like old cum

OTM

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Sunday, 3 October 2004 06:59 (twenty years ago)

Do Americans spell all whisky 'whiskey'?

Over here, Scotch is 'whisky' and Irish is 'whiskey'.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 3 October 2004 10:28 (twenty years ago)

the bottle of makers mark on my shelf spells it "whisky." but i believe "whiskey" is more common in the states.

up thread I meant Old Crow not Old Forrester. Grandpa didn't drink no rotgut.

Currently I'm rocking canadian club, mainly as a cocktail whisky, though.

Best Sour I had used Rip van Winkle Rye, but I've not searched hard enough to find a bottle of it to take home. Rye whisky recommendations would be appreciated though.

I'm pretty sure JD has always been 40% ABV in the UK. I don't like it anyway, give me scotch any day.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago)

JD is really only good to use in conjunction with a couple of other things to make a marinade for steak and mushrooms. Actually drinking it is kind of like drinking any of the other ingredients in the marinade, for example straight BBQ sauce or vinegar. This would be disgusting, and so is drinking JD.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Drinking viagre is very much better than drinking JD; there is a subtelty and depth of flavour present in even crap vinagre that is not present in JD.

Ed (dali), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Viagra? Vinegar? Speak english, boy!

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm the other guy who likes gin, though. The G&T is my go-to mixed drink.
