What is going on with all this stuff being put into "new" plastic containers? Things that have always been fine in bags somehow need the protection of a hard plastic shell - Dorito's, for instance. What has changed? Is this bothering anybody else?

Meanwhile, a floating island of plastic the size of Texas is taking over the Pacific Ocean:

those things are reusable. I've got lots of stuff stored in things like that. mini m&m containers are good for quarters.

Yes, but I'm sure most people don't reuse them. Plastic packaging like that just seems really wasteful and unnecessary to me.

And why can't you get your videos or cds out of that cellophane wrapping? What's up with that?

People are paranoid about tampering - food n drugs being tampered with by terrorists or whatever - thus the excessive packaging to prove safety and cleanliness. Plus for things like CDs, its the prevention of theft thing I'm guessing - plastic then alarm stickers then more plastic (and that outer layer of tough cellophane is a bitch to get off - I've cut my hand open badly on that shit).

Its horrible, and wasteful, and that link andy put above about all the trash in the ocean depressed me no end.
