Does rape have anything to do with sex ? Do you really think it is Just power and control?

That rape supposedly has nothing to do with sex just kills me. This makes no sense to me. I have an attorney friend who is convinced of this nonsense. I have yet to hear a convincing case or see good research that backs this claim up. Any thoughts? Do you really think rape has nothing to do with sex?

More about power, less about sex.

I've never heard anyone say that rape has "nothing" to do with sex. That's pretty impossible to defend since it's so completely over-generalized and quite clearly some cases of rape have quite a bit to do with sex. But rape, as most people understand it, is in most cases definitely primarily concerned with establishing dominance over another person. And that seems perfectly logical to me.

sex is easy to get, no matter who you are.

taking sides: $50 out your bank account vs potential long jail sentence

power is quite hard to get, no matter who you are

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i think there is probably a continuum, at one end it is almost all power, at the other it is a combination of sex/power, but even at that end, they could just get a prostitute, so its got something to do with entitlement, a feeling of "i shouldnt have to pay", an assertion of "rights". an inability to get sex except on the subordinate position of john, how to reverse that power inbalance? claim back what 'should' have been theirs?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear it all the time.

Well good lord LOOK at what that question is the answer to!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

william, when people talk about "rape fantasies", why do you think they say that and not "sex fantasies"? what do you think the difference is?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure i see your point. I don't think that if one fantasizes about rape he omits the sex part. I'm not making a claim that completely denies power, control or any other factors that could come into play. I am simply questioning the assertion that sex has no part in rape at all.

Can you say with a straight face say that rape has Nothing to do with sex? Is there any research to back any of this up? Shit, I'll even take a good argument.

William Mcdonald, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

research: where is this "rape has nothing to do with sex" come from?

William Mcdonald, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Rape is about using sex itself as a violent weapon. But I think the sex is secondary to the sick power trip.

Yeah - wot he said.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth's point is bang on...sex..even violent sex is for sale in any major city, if it was purely a sexual urge there are easier and safer ways of meeting it. But...the flip-side of this is the question if it's all about the power why bother with the sexual part at all? There are plenty of people who enjoy the power of violence..domestic beaters, football hooligans but mainly, it's divorced from any sexual trip.
Any time on the internet will show you that almost anything can be sexualised, fetishised. Some things just seem to have a more common chance of being fetishised than others..(hundreds of sites dealing with the sexual atraction of shoes..none on the eroticism of hats, far as I know). Power and violence are two things that seem to be most easily mentally linked with sex...
I think the point that I'm (Finally) trying to make is that for a rapist sex=power, power=sex.

(just realised I have almost certainly brought a glut of 'hat-porn' sites down on my head)
