He has died of liver cancer.
I have read his books and columns for many years and the world has lost one of its most brazen and robust critics.

He outlived Levesque.

Perhaps if Trudeau, Turner, Mulroney, and Chretien had read his stuff a bit closer, it would've added some sanity to their proceedings...

when my friend was head boy of his high school (how he became that is another story in itself) they asked him to name the grad dance. he was proud of killing the grad by naming it the mordecai richler dance.

i can imagine a series of canlit dances .
The margaret atwood- no boys
the irving layton- no girls
the lenoard cohen - all paper hats on our concussions
the michale ondentjae- overly complex people concede to facists for love
the evelyn lau dance- fuck the famous and write about it
the douglas coupland - off in the corner making fun of everyone who doesn't get the popculture refrences.
God this is fun

Great idea!
William Gibson dance - nobody dances, everyone's circling around the DJ booth talking about the turntables and mixing board, but nobody can hear each other because they've all got Discmans playing at the same time
The Jim Carrey dance - one person stands in the middle gurning and doing pratfalls, spilling the contents of the punchbowl and popping the balloons, while the rest of the guests slowly drift toward the exits
The David Cronenberg...uhhh...well, I'm sure everyone can come up with something to fit that.

The Graham Greene dance: no-one likes each other and they're all catholics.
The Boccacio dance: Can only be held in times of plague.
The Chaucer dance: All chat-up lines have to be in middle english.
