Woulda been 100 years old today. No thread about him from what I can tell so let's celebrate the great man. Among millions of other reasons to cheer, I thoroughly approve of the fact he settled in San Diego's environs and that UCSD's library is named after him thanks to a huge donation on his widow's part.

if only they'd quit defiling his oeuvre with crappy McDo-merchandisable films.

I think Joseph Campbell turns 100 very soon (or his bones do.)

there was no mention in that article about the him being a three time emmy/oscar? winner. i was sad to hear of the real house on mulberry street being demolished a few years back ,some of that huge donation should have made its way back to mulberry street.

Only four posts over some hours now. ARE THE REST OF YOU ON ILX PHILISTINES? This is Dr. Seuss here for god's sake!

Dr Seuss helped to teach me to read. "The Cat In The Hat" was one of the first things I ever read.

i actually made the effort to read every single one of his books when i was a kid (they're all listed on the back, tho i think i missed a few of the ones he wrote under pseudonyms). unbelievably classic, one of my heroes and easily the greatest children's picture-book writer ever. the fact that his books still stand up so well despite his legacy being thoroughly trashed by hollywood (as well as nickelodeon and all those awful fake-seuss books) is a tribute to how timeless they are.

has anyone read the recent collection of his war cartoons?

I never read Dr Seuss. We had Jane and John in our day. Roger Red-Hat and Jenny Yellow-Hat, anyone?

First book I ever read was a hebrew translation of 'cat in the hat'. It was amazing that it still rhymed.
