I seem to remember being told (or reading) that lawyers in the UK wear those silly black gowns because they are still 'officially' in mourning for some person. seems like a long time to mourn, but these things have a habit of sticking around because ppl are forgetful. I've searched around the internet (haha what search string to use!) and can't find anything. does anybdy on ilx know?

Its a busy job, black doesn't show up dirt. This saves time on washing so one can concentrate on more pressing matters.
