I have had good luck with Feria but NOT their reds, their reds are terrible. What color are you dying your hair? Semi-permanents are the way I usually go when I'm drugstoring it (SINCE YOU SHOULD NOT BE LIGHTENING YOUR HAIR AT A DRUGSTORE FYI IT WILL TURN BAD), and I really like Castings but I fucked up my hair a couple times and couldn't put a semi-perm over it, so I used Feria then.

If you're trying to lighten it you should really go see a professional though.

cheers. i would never lighten my hair at home. my hair was bleached then dyed bright orange red, feria which was great, but i dyed it a feria light brown once the red had faded quite a bit and it is dull. i want a nice rich brown.

Hmmm, so your hair is brown now though? I'd recommend getting the castings, they have a couple nice browns and since it's not permanent it doesn't do as much damage, causing the dullness.

Also, John Frieda, I think, just put out a new version of his Pure Blonde hair care line, for brunettes, that is supposed to help it not fade so much. When I wore my hair blonde, the Pure Blonde worked really well and while I haven't tried the new line yet, it's worth a shot I think.

I love the Feria colours, but you have to like strong punky colours to like their results I think. Feria bright red is great esp on my grey hair, it comes out RED. I switched to the deep red and it came out burgundy, and eh thats ok.

NB: feria reds stain the CRAP out of porcelian so be warned. I have stains on my bath I have been unable to get out, and Ive been home dyeing for years without major stain incidents before now.

heh, all the grouting in our shower is a strange orange colour due to the same dye

does anybody know if there is a product you can buy to strip the red from your hair before you try to dye it brown?

silver polish

I dont see why you couldnt dye it brown over the red actually, as long as it was a darker brown, tho it may still have red tones. There are dye removal products that work a bit like a blonding/bleach product, but as always with lightening its usually best left to professionals. I went from black to red and to do this had to have my hair stripped of colour - this took over half an hour of massaging some stuff into my hair, to keep it warm, it was some new stuff that worked on heat and was less harsh than peroxide etc. But I doubt you'd be able to buy such stuff in stores.

I need a good dark red/burgundy-ish dye. Everything I've tried lately (on top of naturally lightish red) goes purple.

Have you given it some time? Burgundy and reds fade really quickly. Feria Chocolate Cherry (or something like that) turned my hair really purple at first, but after a week or so it faded to a really nice dark red.

Ipsofacto, the grouting in my bathroom is orange too, but nobody has dyed their hair in my house. It's mould :(

also, beware of the people at lush or the body shop who will tell you that you should use henna to restore your hair to a nice glossy brown. if you use henna IT WILL NOT COME OUT. until you grow it out. listen to me. my friend didn't believe me and called me in tears. if you try to color it after you use henna your hair will turn green. if you try to use henna on recently bleached hair, or if your hair is natually red, it will turn green. seriously.

go for petrol-based chemicals and you'll be much much happier.

(i also like feria, but my hair is so short that perm v. semi perm doesn't make much of a difference)
