Kingdom Hospital

anybody seen this? I like how Stephen King takes credit for the von Trier production and exorcises his hit-and-run demons in the first 15 minutes, w/creepy use of "Red Dragon Tattoo" by Fountains of Wayne, of all things.

i think i saw the part where dude gets hit by a car and is all "hey man, you hit me with a car! hey mr. raven, get off me!" and mr. raven is all "i'm gonna eat you up!"

also the "stephen king's kingdom hospital" thing is a bit rich.

In all fairness, and in all respect to the better half, I should note that the executive producer of the American series is one Mr. von Trier.

I'd read a bunch of negative reviews of this - heck, add to that the not-so-A-plus King track record with TV - so I was completely convinced that this would turn out to be two mockeries of a sham. Instead, all I got was one great series opener. Not so much that the episode itself was spiffy. It's certainly quite fine, but a bit slow and meandering. What makes this great news is that this is precisely the way that the original started out, and there are not-so-subtle indications that this is going to be an extremely faithful rendition of Riget. If that holds true (and there is absolutely no reason to think it won't, seriously), this will be the bee's knees.

wouldn't it be more fun--considering the title and all--if they decided to fuck with it a bit?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

does stephen king do the hand thing at the end

prima fassy (mwah), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

cos that was really the whole point of the original

prima_fassy (mwah), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

no, and I was really pissed off that he didn't

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on Coombe Road just before Norbiton Station isn't it?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

the Danish series rocked hard, so my suspicion is that an american remake would be k-rub, like what happened with that Nightwatch remake.

the vicar, Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never even seen past episode 4 of the original! what happened to the rest of the episodes, they never came out here!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

WHO DOES UDO KIER'S PART?!?!?!?!!?!?

(that is key)

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

does stephen king do the hand thing at the end

what do you mean by this? you mean von trier's little speeches at the end of each episode?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

He means the hand jive.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i love those little speeches!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

No hand thing, but it's replaced by a reprise of the gloriously campy voiceover at the beginning.

We haven't gotten to the Udo Kier portion yet. For a moment there, I thought they got rid of the excellent sarcoma plotline, but later I realized that they've set it up by introducing the father of the sleep study guy.

Revive. This was on 'proper' telly last night. I taped it. Anyone else?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I also taped it.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefered Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.

..., Monday, 10 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched this, thought it was a bit slow but I'm prepared to give it a chance.

Didn't realise that it's a remake of an original - please don't spoil it for me!

The baseball episode that was on BBC2 the week before last was ace.

The priest/second coming one that was on this week wasn't quite so good.

Every week it makes me laugh with the 'STARRING: ANDREW MCCARTHY' splash at the beginning. They might as well as announce it as 'LARRY FROM WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S AND THE DAD FROM HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS, TOGETHER AT LAST...'

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If von Trier is exec producing it and it is a close and faithful adaptation, there is one possible bonus -

We might finally get to figure out what happens in Riget 3.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I, also, think it's a bit slow. Presumably that's what comes of stretching a 5-episode series out to American TV-show length.

Mostly, it makes me want to re-watch the original.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

has it been canceled for next season yet?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we know who plays Udo Kier's part yet?
