Why is September the ninth month and not the seventh month?

hamish, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They added months, yo.

Cryosmurf, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

who decided that? why?

hamish, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The earliest Latin calendar was a 10-month one, beginning with March; thus, September was the seventh month, October, the eighth, etc. July was originally called Quintilis, meaning fifth; August was originally called Sextilis, meaning sixth.

About Calendars

I'll take your word for it, but I always thought the Roman Calendar had ten months starting with January, until Augustus added in August (after himself) and July (after Julius Caesar).

The Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I R thinking this is a very pointless question!

Hamish Eugene, get a hobby. Or find religion. then again they amount to the same thing.

High Priestess Menelaus Darcy, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I believe the Dirty Vicar is correct.

eugene is not my name, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Macrame. or lace making, you could make a pretty sailor collar for Liz, some shirt sleeve ruffles for yourself. Or you could get youself a middle name like Eugene. Rustle and I think its entirely appropriate
