Scottish Girls (not griddles)

Here's something that's been on my mind recently. I never get chatted up when I'm out and about in Scotland, in Edinburgh (where I live) in particular. When I go somewhere else (e.g. London, Belfast, Newcastle), I do get chatted up. What gives?

hmmm, Friday, 5 March 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

They're saving their love for Irishmen (warning: results based on a sample size of 1)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 March 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember reading in the Metro that a far higher percentage of people have girlfriends/boyfriends in Scotland than in the rest of the country, so I guess there will be fewer people on the prowl than in Newcastle, London or Belfast.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 5 March 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

och aye the noo

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 5 March 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Did it say why more people are in relationships in Scotland? (apart from ensuring that gingerness doesn't spread any further than absolutely necessary)

NB - I meant girls who live in scotland, not just girls who are scottish. I think that's obv but, y'know...

hmmm, Friday, 5 March 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No mystery here. Scottish girls are surrounded by Scotsmen everywhere they go. With an unending supply of sexually charismatic men on tap, they tend to ignore the kind moderately attractive men who pass for hot stuff in London, Belfast and Newcastle.

stopyerticklinjock, Friday, 5 March 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

scottish men pick up all the aussie chicks too

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 5 March 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i knew this guy who faked a scottish accent purely so he could score with the ladeez. and fuck me it worked an utter charm

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 5 March 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought australian women were all amazonian whores anyway?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

they all live in sydney

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 5 March 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

expedia.com here i come

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear that the women of iceland are particularly pro-active in a chatting up type way as there's only about 2 men to go around the whole country.

hmmm, Friday, 5 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

are you from the reykjavik tourist board? if so you're doing an excellent job

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Irish men are rubbish at chatting girls up, though maybe this doesn't apply in Belfast.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

life during wartime

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

and they both suffer from terrible chaffing

xpost

No I am not from the RTB. I was planning to go back to Iceland this year anyway just for kicks and volcanoes. I was in a relationship last time was there and now I am not so when I heard about the men women ratio... The women are stunning from what I remember, and from what some of my workmates have said.

hmmm, Friday, 5 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't your own memory be enough?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I was only there for a day, I was stupendously jet lagged, I was in a relationship, it was a few years ago and I have ruined my mind in the intervening period. So, no. It's barely enough to enable me to do my shitty job.

hmmm, Friday, 5 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought australian women were all amazonian whores anyway

What a great combination, unbounded promiscuity and extreme athleticism. Still doesn't explain why they like Scots, is it the ginger hair?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the way they roll their Rs

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

like chingy

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like scottish girls.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

or something.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

hows that working out for you?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

out?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oot.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ohhhhhh.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps it's due to Presbyterian modesty.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

And how would you suggest I deal with that?

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Promise them discretion.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I always do that anyway. I'm a discrete kinda guy.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe you need to be a little rougher around the edges, then.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Catholicism?

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I will try both discretion and catholicism while out tonight. Watch out laydeeez.....

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Catholicism as described in this thread?

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(where are you going? I want to watch)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Revolution.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, maybe not then :-)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

(if I do go out tonight it will be just to the pub, I think)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'm obv not going to Revolution. I would go if I could get away with making the masses there lick my cancerous sores but I think I would be escorted from the premesis and poliletly asked to be on my way. I don't know where I'm going to go. Cuba Norte for beer with workies in a couple of mins. I hadn't thought about going out after that until I started this thread and now I'm quite tempted.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

cavendish

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I had one drink in the pub and then went home. I was in bed by 10. How very Catholic of me.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Can i just say that Scottish male accents don't work on Scottish females (this one anyway).

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I just went round to a friend's house, and sat up until 7am arguing about random stuff.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. An arugument about random stuff sounds difficult to resolve and potentially very aggravating. Did it last a while?

I don't have a Scottish accent despite having spent almost all of my life here. I get accused of sounding like I'm from Belfast and occasionally from Canada or Austrailia. Mostly Belfast.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, from about midnight until 7am. It was mostly friendly - only one person got in a huff, and they left.

I don't have a Scottish accent. Because I'm English.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Strangely enough the Belfast accent does work on me. I find myself chatting to random guys in bars whenever i'm there which i'd never do at home.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that an accent thing or a regiional/personal charm thing?

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think its an accent thing - i got involved with a colleague a while back who i'd probably never given a second glance if he'd had a Scottish accent.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i have an english accent possibly because i'm chinese. every now and then i pretend to speak in scottish and fails. especially when it comes to words like "st. enoch"

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

avoid discussions of shite glasgow shopping centres and [insert amusing anecdote about St. Enoch's life here cos I couldn't rapidly google any]. You will be fine.

I don't like Scottish accents either. In fact, I don't really like Scotland very much.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Irish men are rubbish at chatting girls up, though maybe this doesn't apply in Belfast.

????

Not saying I'm not but it seems a peculiar thing to say. Are you drawing on your cross dressing experiences in Temple Bar N?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm actually good at the chatting up part, it's the looking nice I have trouble with.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

We should have babies.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure it's fair to inflict that on the world.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That doesn't seem to stop anyone else from doing it.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ronan has just sucessfully chatted up again!!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hilarious.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hha ha, no, Ronan. I'm just basing it on what many Irish women have said to me.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

girls are ok.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Has Tom finished his battle with gurls yet? Who won?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

No one appears to know the outcome of that particular battle. Try Ladbrokes.
