whittling vs. woodcarving

is there a difference?
is there an end result to whittling, or is it all about the process, i.e. do you just whittle your stick until there's nothing left?

I think that woodcarving is done in a woodshop, and whittling is done on a porch.

and never the twain shall meet?

It's like violins and fiddles, I think.

this questing comes because I compile a weekly community events calendar and I got a listing for the whittlers and woodcarvers club.

Maybe whittlers are just older?

I kinda like my possibly naive idea that whittling is done simply for whittling's sake. That there's no point to it aside from doing it. It's pure like that. I should start.

Woodcarving is normally done with a mallet and chisel, with the piece of wood held in a vice. Whittling is done with handknives on a hand-held piece of wood.

whittling is done whilst waiting for trains carrying Charles Bronson to show up at deserted stations. woodcarving is done whence you need a new animal figurine to put on the mantle over your fireplace.
