no, their pitching staff isn't all that good really.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

But surely, their offense will crush. Won't that make up for it?

57 7th (calstars), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe i'm being pissy, but when i think of "best" i think of the whole package ... not just offense, but also pitching and defense.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

On paper, if everyone was healthy and in their prime, yes, this would be the 1998 Yanks all over again.
But the team is old, and the performance of an old team is more difficult to predict because you never know when an old player will get old FAST, plus there are greater injury risks.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

they have no 3rd or 2nd baseman and 2 all-star short stops.

dyson (dyson), Saturday, 6 March 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Opposing right-handed hitters should swing a little late then

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 6 March 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the point of the MLB anyway? All the good players get bought up by the Yanks, the Yanks win the World Series, occasionally remembering to give it up every so often to keep things "interesting". Yawn.

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 6 March 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The point is waiting for Steinbrenner to die and in a deathbed reversal leave most of his money to the Red Sox, who immediately firebomb Yankee Stadium and hunt down all the fans like rabid dogs before dumping them in the ocean. Further money is turned over to the Cubs, who act in similar fashion towards the White Sox. In all the confusion, San Diego scoops up all the best players thanks to a mysterious goldmine discovery in La Jolla and wins the next thirty World Series running.

Not that I've thought about this much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 March 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned in baseball knowledge shocka!

SNL needs to bring back the old "George Steinbrenner Health Watch" surely? To the extent that SNL needs to continue to exist at all, that is.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 March 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned in baseball knowledge shocka!

No, I just want the Padres to win everything.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 March 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

substitute "phillies" for "padres" in ned's scenario, and i would be very happy.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 6 March 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

substtute "jays" for "phillies" in eisbär's comment and i would be very happy.

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 7 March 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys won the 93 series by beating the phillies. aren't you satisfied?

johnkrukbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

All the good players get bought up by the Yankees, but they keep losing to small-market teams in the Series.

I don't care if the Yankees dominate baseball forever - that's less of a problem than the game just being fucking boring. Lower scores, cut homeruns, and keep games at the two hour mark, for the love of God.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 7 March 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

A noticeably slimmed-down Jason Giambi will belt 12 home runs and drive in 63, whilst playing in all games. Gary Sheffield, needing something to replace his 'roids jones, will turn to trucker's speed and be felled by an exacerbated congenital heart defect for the remainder of the year. A panicky Steinbrenner will turn to the recently un-retired Cecil Fielder, who will hit a robust .058 and hit into a record 376 double plays. the Yankees finish in third place.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Three cheers for Cecil Fielder!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 7 March 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't diss THE BIG DADDY! I saw him nearly hit a ball out of old Tiger stadium.

Fielder's son is just as big and is playing in the minors for the Brewers.

earlnash, Sunday, 7 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

prince fielder sez WHO SAID THAT ABOUT MY DAD?!!?!?!?!?!?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 7 March 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Cecil was the man, yeah I love that guy. comes back from Japan, knocks 51 HRs, the last great player the Tigers had!

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 March 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yanks. Bah, F**k**g Babe Ruth.
Yanks. Bah, F**k**g Buck Dent.
Yanks. Bah, F**k**g Aaron Boone.

Yanks. Best sports anouncer: John Sterling. The guy is by far the most knowledgeable announcer I've ever listened to. THHHU Yankees win, I can do without...

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 7 March 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Cecil made me a lot of money that year. I was 10, playing rotisserie baseball in the local bar's league, and (to the delight of the middle-aged people/my parents) bought Bobby Thigpen, Bob Welch and Cecil Fielder. 59 saves, 27 wins and 51 HRs later I kicked everyone's ass. It was beautiful. (It probably helped that I didn't have a job or responsibilites, so I spent the summer doing nothing but watching baseball and figuring out moves to make.)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 7 March 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

any "improvement" whereby the beneficiaries of the yankees' demise is the red sox = NO IMPROVEMENT AT ALL. it's like trading in a chevy cavalier for a hyundai -- THEY'RE BOTH SHIT AND OUGHTA BE FLUSHED!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(actually, i do kinda root for the yankees. just that it's getting boring nowadays, since they always end up in the world series or at least the playoffs.)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Whyfore the shitting on the White Sox? They've been just as hapless as the Cubs, plus they have that Shoeless Joe Jackson thing going on top of that.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Sunday, 7 March 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the white sox, if anything, are even MORE hapless than the cubs!

my team (the phillies -- THE WORST RECORD OF ANY MLB FRANCHISE EVER) beats ALL teams when it comes to haplessness, though. difference is, phillies' fans don't fetishize their team's sucky-ness (unlike cubs or bosox fans).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

You want haplessness? Welcome to Arlington Fucking Texas.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 7 March 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

plus dubya owned the rangers ... ok, y'all top the phillies. BUT NO-ONE ELSE!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

duh '89 A's = best team in Baseball history

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, you mean in 1989. That's OK.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

also kevin brown (groundball pitcher) + all dh infield = uh-oh spaghetti-o!

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

please '89 A's had EIGHT count 'em EIGHT surefire or borderline hall of famers. IN THEIR PRIME.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, not even the (Not yet the) Big One could stop the A's that year.

Leee the Lee (Leee), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Stewart (doubtful) (on a good day w/ a nice tailbreeze, maybe)
Rickey
Canseco
Eckersley
McGwire

and?

Lansford? (shyeah)
Steinbach? (shyeah)
Dave Parker! (my bad, almost forgot him)

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my favorite highlights of all time involves a member of that team, though, and at another place in time.

Canseco in the outfield going back on a long fly ball. It hits him on the top of the head and bounces over the fence. Christ, even I never did anything that awful.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

dave henderson!

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

TONY PHILLIPS

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

WALT WEISS

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

BUT:

Joe Morgan
Pete Rose (doink)
Johnny Bench
Tony Perez
George Foster
Dave Concepcion
Don Gullett

That's more my cup o' tea.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 7 March 2004 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Let us now boldface and supersize slick-fielding no-hit infielders.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

NEIFI PEREZ

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

JOSE LIND

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

that reminds me ... the A's USED to be from philly. why did THEY leave and the shitty phillies stay?!?

(that's rhetorical, 'cause i know why.)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

GLENN HUBBARD

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, blount, i gotta go w/ popshots on this one ... Big Red Machine all the way.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my favorite highlights of all time involves a member of that team, though, and at another place in time.

Canseco in the outfield going back on a long fly ball. It hits him on the top of the head and bounces over the fence. Christ, even I never did anything that awful.

What team was he playing for at the time? Oh yes, Your Texas Rangers. And then there was that time the jackass manager let him pitch in a blowout and he fucked up his arm.

The Rangers are the worst tease in professional sports - once a decade they'll show a flash of not being awful (1989 - Ruben! Ruben! Ruben!, the playoff run in the late-90s) only to sink back to their natural state.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

why not spare yerself all that grief and heartache, and root for the astros instead?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I CRIED THE DAY THEY TRADED CANSECO!

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

astros still got some enron taint plus mega grief and heartache. if rangers are the cubs of texas astros are the redsox.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that's funny.

(x-post to Eisbar, not trying to mock Blount's emo tendencies)

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yo the astros got petitte and the rocket. MAKE THE SWITCH, DUMP THE RANGERS BITCH!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I haven't rooted for the Rangers since they fired Bobby Valentine - I'm a Red Sox and Giants fan, nominally. Or I'll be a Giants fan again once Bonds retires.

The utter futility of the Rangers' existence amazes me, though. It's just not possible for one franchise to be run this badly for its entire life.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Carl Yastrzemski
Fred Lynn
Jim Rice
Cecil Cooper
Carlton Fisk
Dwight Evans
Rico Petrocelli
Luis Tiant
Bill Lee
et al.
will not be inviting the big red machine anywhere soon.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll never be able to root for the Astros because of their '80s uniforms. Same reason I hate the Pirates (late-'70s) and Phillies (forever-ever).

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The utter futility of the Rangers' existence amazes me, though. It's just not possible for one franchise to be run this badly for its entire life.

you really (mis)underestimate the phillies' front office, 'tis all that i can say.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't wait for 'dare to truth'! (canseco's "autobio")

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually liked the 80's Astros unies. Nolan Ryan never looked so awesome.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, that '98 Yankee team was OK, too. Y'know, for an American League team. Good thing they were able to prove their greatness against THE PADRES.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The only time any 80s baseball unis looked good were in N.O.R.E. videos.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Spandex. I hear it's still around, unfortunately.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

c'mon - EVERYTHING looked good on rick reushcel.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, they traded away Sammy Sosa for jack.
The greatest free agent in Rangers history was Nolan Ryan, who was a .500 pitcher with a 4.xx ERA for his stint here.
It took ~27 years just to make the playoffs.
The city built a ballpark for DUBYA so he could promptly sell the team for a 100mln profit. (Yo, cockfarmer, where's all the shops and riverwalks you promised? The big concrete ravine ain't gonna cut it.) - at least this allows me to say I hated Dubya long before anyone else.
The current owner outbid himself by like $80mln for A-Rod, only to trade him away for a guy who they're now talking about trading for a low-minors pitcher who'll just get ruined by the system anyway.

I know there should be tons more, but at some point you have to start forgetting Rangers' fuckups, or they begin to push out real information.

Surely the Phillies since 1970 can't be that bad? (And if we include the previous 70 years of Washington Senators history...)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rangers are the Arizona Cardinals of Texas, the Astros are the Colts. Good, but never quite good enough.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

twins got dibs on 'first in war, first in peace, and last in the american league' washington awful history!

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

They should make a movie about the Raangers. It worked for the Indians.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Same reason I hate the Pirates (late-'70s) and Phillies (forever-ever).

?? dude, look at this and tell me that this is NOT the most pimp-looking thing ever!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely the Phillies since 1970 can't be that bad? (And if we include the previous 70 years of Washington Senators history...)

you got me there ... if only for the 1975-1983 mike schmidt-steve carlton-tug mcgraw salad days (and 1993, too, of course).

b/w 1916 (the grover cleveland alexander world series -- WHICH THEY LOST) and 1950 (the richie ashburn whiz kids world series -- WHICH THEY ALSO LOST) -- well, THAT is futility & incompetence on a scale that NO MLB franchise has ever topped. cf.: i do think that the senators had a FEW world series under their belt during that time period.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

in b/w 1983 and 1993, the only year the phillies were worth a damn was 1986 when they were in 2d -- A FULL 30 SOMETHING GAMES BEHIND THE METS.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

fwiw, here's a good account of bad phillies history.

the rangers have some BIG shoes to fill!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 7 March 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Whenever anyone discusses the Yankees at this point, I just want to post a picture of the Transformers or something. That is all I have to add to this discussion.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheffield jammed his thumb and is out 2-3 months, their pitching is very, very fragile... Getting A-Rod out of The Ballpark will drop his numbers to a more human level (esp. at Yanqui Stadium where he hit .208 BA, .345 OBP, .542 SLG in 2003), then realizing that THE GREATEST PLAYER IN THE GAME is basically Vernon Wells with nicer tushy.

Moral of the story: Do not buy into East Coast media hype, this year is as open as the last 4... A darkhorse will prevail (Indians, Padres, Blue Jays).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

curious: are the giants considered darkhorses yet?

Best case scenario is he's only out for 3 weeks.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Of course the Yankees will win the world series! And people who say they dont have any pitching o no they dont they only have 3 of the top 15 pitchers in baseball. Yankees are definitely going to win the world series. NO DOUBT. and the red sox will finish third in the division.

Yankees Fan, Saturday, 27 March 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Derek Jeter (and the rest of the 1998 Yankees) actually has a ring that says "Best Team Ever" written in diamonds. That'll put a bling in your swing!

I'd completely forgotten about this thread.
Tooting my own horn -- me, dyson, and Eisbär totally called this one in the first few posts of this thread. Perhaps we can give Ned some tangential oracle points for predicting the Padres' competitive season, albeit not for the reasons outlined in his post.
