i capretti, sono un uomo d'azione del caffè!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 7 March 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Or rather:
i bambini, diventano uomini d'azione del caffè!

(you gotta love the coarse translation of babelfish sometimes)

Let us all praise in hailing the glories of a cup of coffee -
HERE HERE

Thank you, Ned.

two years pass...
So far every coffee I've had here is the GREATEST COFFEE ON EARTH.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 3 February 2007 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

yes when i stayed in italy for 3 weeks i had some of the best coffee evar. the down side is that that was 6 years ago and i've been completely addicted to ridiculously strong coffee ever since. actually, it's not so bad! it's wonderful!

It wasn't until just now that I realized that I haven't seen a single Starbucks since arriving (and that includes the stop in Zurich). There's no way American hegemony can complete against a 1.20 euro coffee that's better and stronger in every way... and also served in a real cup and not cardboard.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 3 February 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

When I was in Italy about ten years ago for work the company I was in during the day had coffee machines (I think Zanuzzi was the brand name) that dispensed a surprisingly good espresso for about 75 cents US. I was thinking what a great business it would be to bring those to LA and get them installed in businesses here. Then I found out the company subsidized the cost, so who knows what it would actually cost per cup.

Where specifically are you at, Chris?

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 4 February 2007 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

my dad's work has one of those... company probably subsidizes theirs too cause i think it's similarly priced. we have free coffe pod machines at work but the coffee isn't that incredible.

Yeah, when I was visiting Marco D. a couple of years back he took great pride in the fact that Starbucks failed miserably there. Only other country I've been to so far where that also holds true: Venezuela.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 February 2007 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

The only time I stopped in Italy was a stopover in the Rome airport - even there the coffee was better than almost anything I've ever had in the states.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 4 February 2007 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

Starbucks doesnt do too well in Melbourne either, except in suburban malls, but in the cafe districts no one is interested. Who'd want it when you can get good espresso (or greek or turkish coffee depending where you are).

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

mmmm turkish coffeeeeeee

also: cuban coffee

he smells something else. he don't smell honey and pears. (tehresa), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

Turkish coffee is a nice thing to have once in a while but I find most of the goodness comes from the spices and sugar and that the coffee itself is generally not that good.

What's cuban coffee? Cafe Con Leche?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

no it's kind of espresso like but loaded with sugar

oh look, Trayce putting on a smug anti American attitude!

UART variations (ex machina), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

waiter at cuban rest. once described it as sweet as love, black as death and... something else i can't remember.

I still have my American's taste for a good cup of drip brew once in a while - something comforting about having a big, long-lasting mug of coffee. But most days it's nothing but espresso for me - I have seen the light.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

Not all all Jon, I wouldnt care if Starbucks came from Venezuala, it just tastes like ass is all.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

FFS dude, I want to come to the US for a big road trip, did you never see my thread last year?

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

Did you mean: Venezuela

There's a number of things at Starbucks that don't taste bad at all. I guess its like the Papa John's of coffee?

UART variations (ex machina), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not crazy about espresso... but french press mmmm. i need to get one of those.

he smells something else. he don't smell honey and pears. (tehresa), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

Starbucks is like Wendy's or Subway or Chick-Fil-A -- it's a relief to find one when there's nothing else around, but I'd rarely seek one out.

BTW, the "short" cappucino there really does taste better than the "tall" -- better proportions.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

i love espresso. i don't even care if i'm served a bad one, i just love the ritual of drinking it (esp with lemon rind & sugar cube) and the caffeine buzz.

tuesdays with maury povich (get bent), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know, I think espresso can get pretty undrinkable when bad.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

And when it's good it's like a two-ounce glass of heroin.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know, I think espresso can get pretty undrinkable when bad.

when it's bad, i just drink it like a shot, down the hatch.

tuesdays with maury povich (get bent), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

so the red wine i drink at night is good for my heart, and the coffee i drink every morning is good for my liver. hooray for science!

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 4 February 2007 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

also, a friend of mine went into starbucks today and tried to get a coffee but the guy at main ordering station said he was only doing hot chocolate. my friend got shunted off to the cashier for his coffee. i guess hot chocolate is starbucks' cash cow on cold saturday afternoons.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 4 February 2007 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

Starbucks is the lamest of the lame. No coffee content at all, just dishwater-stained milk.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 4 February 2007 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

Where specifically are you at, Chris?

Rome & Venice. Just focusing on visiting two cities well instead of trying to toss in a half-dozen on one trip. I had purchased the airline ticket way in advance otherwise I would have changed plans and gone to the Jarvis/Jennifer Gentle show. I missed seeing Eugene Chadbourne in Venice but it was wacky enough to see posters for it all over town.

I finally did have some so-so coffee and it was my own lazy fault. Instead of walking down to the dining car on the EuroStar (where they have a mini-espresso machine), I bought coffee from the serving cart and it was some sort of instant stuff.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 4 February 2007 07:04 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Chris, do you have a thread/blog where you're posting about Venice? I'd love to read it if so (home of my fathers etc).

My blog is at http://www.quartzcity.net but I haven't been updating on the road. I'll dump everything in when I get back in a couple days.

How many cups a day do you guys drink?

def zep (calstars), Sunday, 4 February 2007 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Probably 2-3 on average. More than that does NOT feel good for me.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

c-d cups

PappaWheelie MMCMXL (PappaWheelie 2), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

When I lived in italy I was on 8-12.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

it depends. i try to mix it up and get my caffeine from different sources -- green tea, diet coke, etc. i don't drink very much coffee on campus because all they sell is starbucks (sbux franchises out to our cafeterias and coffee shops). there's an indie place nearby but their coffee's kinda weak. you'd think i could get ONE good cup of coffee in a college area...

tuesdays with maury povich (get bent), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

a friend of mine went into starbucks today and tried to get a coffee but the guy at main ordering station said he was only doing hot chocolate.

In a sense that really is how they make most of their money - if not literally on hot chocolate, on drinks that are mostly milk, sugary flavored syrup and whipped cream with a single little watery automatic-machine espresso shot drowning at the bottom. "Mmm, Starbucks Coffee is so good" = "MMM, I can't taste the coffee"

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

the fantastic roman water and the real china is key.
