I was sure there must have been a thread about this, already, but no, I can't find.

it is one of my favourite films and is kinda perfect with everything in it and it is on, tomorrow, at 20 past midnight, on BBC 2, I think.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 March 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Also check out Demon Lover Diary for another "making of a movie" movie. It's been over 20 years since I've seen this one, but I remember liking it a lot.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't seen it but i will, tho it's annoyingly scheduled opposite 'All the President's Men'.

But the theme reminds me of 'Living in Oblivion' which was on the other week, that was a lot of fun.

pete s, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I've spent my share of time in the backwater and the ameritundra, but I've never met anyone like that sidekick... what a classic. bof ov em, I guess.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 9 March 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. Played a drinking game where you have to take a hit of vodka everytime that mildly retarded, drug damaged guy says "Votka".

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

El Diablo recommended this film some years back to me, so one day I will properly investigate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

also recommended: 'home movie'

ron (ron), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

my ex a good freind of mine was in a short with mark borchardt, made subsequent to his er fame.

pix here: http://www.cricketfilms.com/living.htm

apparently he was wasted.

(j0n spr1ng3r, the dude who made this movie [and others] is some kind of shock-horror-lovin' radical-conservative catholic, which seemed so novel once...)

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

this movie is wonderful.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(scenario: mr. borchardt plays jesus christ, who allows himself to be eaten by the zombies who are terrorizing minneapolis, curing them.)

xpost--uh, which?

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, american movie!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

...it really is! mike schenk's acoustic metallica is absolutely beatiful, i just grin and tear up at the same time.

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

How much does Spike Jonze' video for Phantom Planet's "Big Brat" rip off "Coven"?

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad people stopped getting american movie wrong. posts three and four are silly OK.

all the president's men is on, tonight, too? that is another one of my favourite films.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

All the President's Men's popularity with today's audiences mystifies me.

American Movie is terrific and not that well known in the UK, I don't think. Everybody video it!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Lately I've been saying "It's alright, it's okay, there's something to live for... Jesus told me so!" a lot. I don't know why, it's been awhile since I last watched the movie. It has a special place in my heart.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, I just remember that N. tried to say that when we were getting out of a taxi on sat night.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

+ed

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

not ned.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Mystic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I always mess up quotes. Just as well - it stops me being too boring.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This is one of my favourite movies ever! Can't wait to see it again, I hope I videoed it okay. The bit where they are smashing the guys head in the cupboard door is just great.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna give up on databases and watch it this afternoon, later.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

omg, I'm supposed to review that short zombie film for City Pages this week along with a bunch of other DV stuff (Springer directed a few on the reel, if I recall). that's amazing that Mark B. shows up in it (as Jesus, no less!).

All the President's Men's one claim to cinematic greatness is its use of blocky, right-angle architexture. It's great. All else? Eh, it's been awhile.

American Movie is obviously classic.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I love this movie so much! That whole argument over "cOHven" "it's pronounced cUHven" still cracks me up to think about. It's a really sweet film though.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the fact that Mark & Mike pop up in random places in pop culture os a fun thing, too. The NFL used them in a spot for Green Bay(i think), that was aired on/around Thanksgiving Day.

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I see Mike on the bus every other week or so. One time, he had a big bottle of Mountain Dew and was chugging it for as long as he could and then gasping for air, over and over again. He is always in a Black Sabbath t-shirt, and the expression on his face never changes. I didn't think he could actually be the same in person as he is in that film, but he really, really seems to be.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

awesome

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that I find that among the most awesome ilxor celebrity sighting stories.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

That is a great, great story. Especially the chugging-then-gasping part.

Those NFL ads were funny; I wonder if even 5% of the intended audience know who those guys are?

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike is a God amongst mere mortals.

Added to Criterion Channel today.

Every time I watch this movie I think two things. One, "I could live in this movie." Two, "I am so grateful I don't live in this movie."

i carry the torch for disco inauthenticity (Eric H.), Friday, 2 July 2021 03:13 (four years ago)

The last time I watched this, I finally watched Coven as well and...it's actually not bad??? Like some of his directorial choices are made to look more inept or buffoonish than what the finished product actually reveals. He's got an eye, and under better circumstances he might've actually gone somewhere.

I Scream For Ice Cream But Also Just All The Time And For No Reason (Old Lunch), Friday, 2 July 2021 07:45 (four years ago)

Read this thread thinking it was about An American Carol, which I had misremembered as belonging to the Scary Movie / Epic Movie, etc. franchise, glad to have cleared up the confusion with myself now.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 2 July 2021 08:39 (four years ago)

Northwestern listed as still "in production" on his wiki page, which can only mean that he's got a Boyhood-style masterpiece waiting in the wings.

RIP Mike Schank, the sweet funny soul at the heart of the extraordinary doc 'American Movie'. Me, Simon & Nick were obsessed with it and since they included Mike's home number on the DVD extras, we called him from London one night. I’m watching this for the first time. My whole extended family is from Wisconsin and this is hitting hard!

It was one of those movies you’d see on the video store’s staffer recommends section but you were too chickenshit to watch because you trying to impress someone.

WesternĀ® with Bacon Flavor, Monday, 5 August 2024 05:50 (one year ago)

Pretty sure I saw this in a theater in Milwaukee around when it came out? A classic for sure, I'm due for a rewatch.
