hell yeah, let's celebrate free internet in the Frankfurt airport

I'm sitting a wireless LAN zone in the Frankfurt airport. It claimed that I'd have to enter credit card info to pay for this, but I connected without a problem and never had to enter a thing. Am I stealing? Who cares! My flight doesn't leave for another three hours and now I've got something to do.

Welcome to my town. I think the wireless LAN at FRA is going to be free this month in an attempt to get people hooked on it.

Ha, that would explain this. T-Mobile will make a killing on this. What else is there to do in an airport? If I'm going to have my wallet gouged, I'd rather do it on the internet than while shopping. There's just something mondo cool about sitting in some random chair, pulling a computer out of my bag, and connecting to my computer in Toronto two minutes later.

Frankfurt airport is cool as I recall....it seemed very large and it has the coolest trains. I had to wait there for about 2 hours en route from London to Amman, Jordan (I think both halves of the flight were with Lufthansa, but I had to change at Frankfurt). I wish I'd had a computer with me as for something to do as I couldn't even buy a coffee as I had no appropriate currency on me (only had £ and JD).

Yeah, it's big. I've never taken the trains, though. This is my second time in this airport, and it's pretty good as airports go. European airports are so much nicer than North American airports, it's not even funny.

Last time I was here, I had to walk for literally 25-30 minutes to get to my connecting gate. We had to walk down a tunnel, to an elevator, through a main hall, down an escalator, down another tunnel ... and it just went on like this forever. It felt like that scene in This is Spinal Tap when they couldn't find the stage, except that I wasn't lost.

Some trains have internet here. Not free. And slow. But still.

On the way back through Frankfurt the next month (April), it was no longer free (as Colin had predicted). I think the way it works now is you're supposed to enter an account number and it gets billed to your mobile/internet account. This is the first I've heard of it in a North American airport (although I haven't been to many NA airports lately).

I have spent many hours in frankfurt airport - meaning i've got drunk there many times - (i love the out of time quality of airports that somehow allows ppl to feel comfortable getting sloshed at 8 am) but that means i pick up random facts out of boredom such as the fact that 16 million ppl travlled through there last year.

my all time favorite airport internet experience so far (tho not free) was just under 10 bucks for internet cafe, shower facilities with everything supplied, plus unlimited free booze!! Jo'burg airport (where i posted drunkenly from to ilx) rules.
