South London FAP - March 20 / night of musical madness

OK, I rarely start threads (let alone suggest FAPs) but I think this is worth it, even for all the North London types (myself included). And yes, this is keeping in line with our apparent 1.5 FAPs per week quota in London...

Saturday March 20th - The People's Republic of Disco 2nd Anniversary Party at The Windmill in Brixton.

I've been to previous events and it's crazy fun. The deal is simple: the DJs don't bring any music. You are encouraged to bring along 2 songs you love (on vinyl or CD), they check them in to the 'vinyl cloakroom' an assign them numbers. Numbers are passed around and randomly picked, and that's what they play all night. Naturally this can lead to much musical strangeness, but the crowd tends to bring pretty fun stuff. If a bunch of us go down, well, you can guess the rest...

I'm going for sure. It's free. Open late. Cheap drinks. Good times. Who's with me?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Me no good at HTML

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(OK, closing tags now. How embarrassing.)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahem. Any-hoo, there's more info here:

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If ever an event had ILE written all over it, it is this one. And its called THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF DISCO!

I will be there for that reason alone.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The big question (which may cause a meltdown for us ILM types):

WHAT TWO SONGS TO BRING?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I should point out that it has nothing to do with actual disco music (for those of you who fear the disco).

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the idea of PROD, and i've always been tempted to start an oxford branch, but i'm just too lazy/scared of what the stewdents would bring in.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh and I just realised I'll be in Brixton that night (watching Kraftwerk!), might have to try and persuade my friends to come along to this.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you going to the early set or the late one? PROD will be jammed later, so I'm thinking of getting to the Windmill early. Could be a fun warm-up for the late-show Kraftwerkers...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

INDEED

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

and jellybean if you want to meet up at the gig then we could do that

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

early one i think. I don't quite know what's happening yet. A friend bought the tickets, he still has them, and I guess I'm going with the whole group of them

but the windmill will be so much fun. it's my favourite pub out of (*counts on finger*) the 4 or 5 i've been to in London. It's even got a couple of dogs who have spent their entire lives on the roof.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude! How much more fun could this be? But also, when a song sucks, you can look for the person who seems really shifty and point and laugh at them. Robster & I probably in London that weekend..? Although this does involve going South Of The River, egad.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah - South Of The River is fun. I used to live near the Windmill in Brixton for a while, and it was great. I'm actually thinking of moving back "south" again this summer. The horror!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's in Brixton anyway, you North London types can get the Vic line and you won't see the river and can pretend you never crossed it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

A warning - The Windmill is a bit of a dive, but it's a good crowd. Yeah, spotting who picked what song is fun - the selectors usually attack the dancefloor with a passion, even if no-one else agrees!

Hmmmmm - should we post the songs we are brigning to avoid duplication, or leave it a secret until the night?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

mock-horror "oh no" talk about crossing river is lame

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You say it's mock horror, Gareth, but my SISTER lives near Stockwell. If you'd met her. you'd understand.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Arrgh punctuation error. Delete Liz :x

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

And I'm just talking shit. Being a foreigner, all this "north/south of the river" business really means nothing to me...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

what time does PROD go on til? i can't believe you can't get a Thameslink train from Herne Hill back to King's Cross at 2-4am. this is a stupid country.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I will probably come to this, but if my current state of song-earworm persists the only songs I will be bringing are CANDLE IN THE C#NTING WIND and CHINA IN YOUR C#NTING HAND C#NT.

Or "Live and Let Die".

We should ALL bring "Live and Let Die".

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot believe Stevem is dissing the nightbus as the only appropriate form of late night travel.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

night bus from Brixton to Harringey = VOYAGE OF DOOM

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It goes until 2am, or a little later if it's really rockin'. They serve adult beverages until 2am.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah for adult beverages, although I suspect this means that cocktails will be presented with a mini dildo stirstick.

Get away with your voyage of doom, Stevem. Voyage of DISCOVERY.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I like this and shall be there too. We should co-ordinate it and dominate the playlist, and regulars can go 'why so twee' and we can snigger and then leave like strange urban guerillas or the littlest hobo.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Free beer for whoever can get We Want Fun on the playlist.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

We Want Fun and Live And Let Die it is, everyone!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ALL YOUR PLAYLIST BELONG TO US

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i figure it will be absolutely packed and many won't get their tracks actually played, but still worth a punt

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have done the infinitely trickier Herne Hill to Crouch End nightbus journey in less than an hour before. Piece'o'piss.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do I think I'm *doing* something on the 20th? there's nothing in my diary. OH GOD WHERE IS MY BRANE!!! What could I possibly be doing? maybe going to this. So long as I can bring my Bubblegum album. Ha-ha. I heart the Windmill.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a bit like karaoke but without the fun of singing it yourself.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you hate not having fun, Mark?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

naturally i am pondering what shoddy bootlegs i can churn out by the 20th just for this occasion...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh but Mark you CAN sing the songs yourself if you like. You'll just have to sing VERY LOUDLY to be heard over the soundsystem...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve: do you love horses? Are they your friends?

(bootleg THAT with andrew wk!!)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

you know what you have to do Stevem!

I won't make tit though unfortunately, I'm not allowed out before the sten night now

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

d'oh, I won't make arse either

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahahaha bounce. Next on the hectic London ILXoR social calendar, as Rob noted on Mark's birthday FAP thread.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I will have to trawl through my ill-advised collection of 90s CD singles for this.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't thought about my songs yet. So many options...
It's going to be a packed, sweaty, crazy night of random musical oddities. Yee-ha!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

your ill-advised 90s CD singles intrigue me...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll see. Mwahahahaha.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

do they let you in if you don't bring any records?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

No. You are forced to manually turn the actual windmill by the pub which powers the soundsystem.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Roll call....who's planning on ganning?

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i will def be there, in my dogtrack suit

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

'(I Wanna Give You) Devotion' which was a pleasant surprise.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be appearing at Club Freaky Trigger as Ally Sheedy (pre-makeover).

Swoon

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave you can be Kevin Sheedy

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I need a long black coat and a really grumpy expression. Mad hair I can manufacture with ease.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 22 March 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

You're doing grumpy just fine today. I thought it was fun. Bah.

Kevin Sheedy had bad hair. I used to, but rectified this on Saturday. He was also left-footed, unlike me. He drilled free kicks, I floated them. On so many levels, I cannot be Kevin Sheedy. I am going to be Carl the Janitor.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

[insert unnecessary "left-footer" comment here]

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Sheedy may be more Irish than me. That's saying something.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I was then, and always will be - Anthony Michael Hall as the geek.

Aww Liz - sorry the night was such a bummer. I know the random-ness of the music doesn't always work, and the Windmill is indeed a dive - I warned ya!

I actually rather enjoyed hearing some trancey stuff (Underworld's "Rez" in particular) and even a little d'n'b at one point. But in a former life I used to DJ at raves, so I guess it's a part of me (I hope I'm not a hippie-goth!). I have to say that overall I enjoyed the selected tunes (helped by ILX) - much better than what I would hear at many other establishments around town. But then again I did leave before midnight, so I have no idea what kind of musical oddness ensued from then onwards...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It's OK Rob, not grumpy any more after cathartic swearfest above. I'm all for dive locations and that, bbbbut the playlists on the PROD website sounded really good! Which was why the discogoths and their terrible trainers/tracks were a nasty shock.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on! You remember the 80s Dance! With the funny elbow-pumping motions and the side-to-side stepping as hugely popularised by Molly Ringworm.

The River Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in a trendy No-ho bar which used to be quite good, before getting a good review in Time Out. All the beautiful people arrived and made it k-rub. They were there with tailed mullets, 80s clothes and as the DJ played 80s tracks, they did the 80s dance big style, in a totally unironic way. As far as they were concerned, they were the height of cool, and as far as I am concerned, whichever fashionista monkey is responsible for this, I hope they are happy. The stupid kunts. This heading towards an 80s revival just as Thatcher karks it, leading to gross revisionism leading to an upturn for the right, leading Blair to move even further rightwards. Or something like that.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop it, you're scaring me.

The River Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

this explains Boyler's Billy Ocean hatin' at least

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I scare myself. I'm serious BTW. The above post isn't a jokey parody.

x-post.

I liked Boris Gardiner though. And nearly brought Eddy Grant to PRoD, as it would have made me laugh to see whether people would dance to 'I don't wanna dance' in a kind of sad ex-cultural studies masters student deconstruction joke kind of way.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

absolutely not, altho 'electric avenue' remains le bombe

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Boris Johnson? Huh? Wha? Oh wait, no, that's one for the Crush of Shame thread, whoops.

Psycho Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to go for a pint with Boris J. Is this sublimated desire?

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1370000/images/_1371910_johnson150.jpg

I dig a man in headphones...

Psycho Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

hubba hubba

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

How did they make him so PINK? I mean, he's a Tory isn't he? Has he been waxing himself with wooly liberal finish or something?

Psycho Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

We saw him in Islington Wagamama once - he really is that colour. He was accompanied by the small group of blond mopped kiddies which led me to conclude that he's cracked his own formula and started to clone himself to swell the Tory ranks.

robster (robster), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And I am like, so jealous!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 22 March 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not? They've been cloning boybands for years, it was only a matter of time before they did it with Tories.

Psycho Kate (kate), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a classic case of Technology in the Wrong Hands.

robster (robster), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

QUANGOTRON

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem grooves in the midst of goths who have been taken over by aliens...

http://look.onemonkey.org/redandblack/redandblack-Images/17.jpg

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't see any goths there. I would never suggest a FAP at a place frequented by goths!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could post my pics but I have a 'film' camera and it will probably be ages before I finish the reel...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i have unattractive hair

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 March 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You look like a Ted!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 22 March 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

That photo has put me in mind of the Dr Who theme. Plus Daleks and budget props/scenery. Also, I think I can see James Lavelle.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 22 March 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

am i to assume that everyone else wearing red had also been to kraftwerk?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i kind of enjoyed that PROD place. It was slightly crowded though.. Haha actually, how did liz managed to see anybody's trainers through all the TORSOS in the way of the line of sight??!?! that's amazing!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The PROD people suggested wearing red (and black) on their website, so those aren't necessarily Kraftwerkers...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe liz was LYING ON THE FLOOR, covered in bouze or summat like...

(oh, OK, fairdos rob)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I give props to the red shirt man!

Barima (Barima), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

which one? the proto-ted, or the sweaty balding one?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

On Thursday I walked past the window of The Duke of York and to my shock saw Boris Johnson playing table football with what looked like a very small (adult) tory wife in training. Part of our flat is over this spot and I felt like going into our room and jumping up and down symbolically on his head, but the incursion of laundry prevented this action.

(the Windmill is where old Mission fans go to die)

suzy (suzy), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone was wearing red because they were all Urban75 interweb socialists. Fortunately, I was also wearing red so fitted right in.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 March 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

blonde girl in nautical-esque garb: "have you just come from work?"
stevem: "no, kraftwerk"
blonde girl in nautical-esque garb: "well you look very nice"
stevem: "thanks! you look nice too, very nautical"
blonde girl in nautical-esque garb: "nautical?"

i think that's far as the conversation went. she was too hard work really.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

badical

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

But was she hott, steve?

I think the red'n'black theme was kind of a nod towards Kraftwerk.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Suzy: don't start.

With Boris.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"You look very nice" is hard work?

What does 'nautical' mean? Was she dressed for diving?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oo-er missus ect.

Starry do you have longing for the Boris?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Boris is bluddy GRATE.

Although the bastard Telegraph wants me to log in so I can read his column - the nadgers! I mean, half arsed anecdotes of public school life followed by misguided medium-right views on The Poor and The Country? Fantastic!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Boris, yesterday:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/840000/images/_844972_ape.jpg

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I was shocked, appalled and disgusted that there was no Boris Johnson ILE thread, so have taken the proactive step of starting one myself.

Appalled of Tunbridge Wells (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is it, then?

Psycho Kate (kate), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

2 above this one in New Answers
