skim milk

the only kind of milk in the office right now. ew! gross! it's all i drank in my early/mid-20s because i was such a crazy fat-phobe, and now i realize how out of my mind i must have been. i hereby apologize to all friends, roommates, boyfriends, relatives, etc who were forced to use it as a result of my neuroses.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont mind it, but then i dont really drink milk.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

skim milk is almost as bad as soy milk.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

skim milk = tippex water

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i always drink skim milk. everything else is just seems too mucousy.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

skim milk = yummy
soy milk = yummy

ian, you are nuts.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

oat milk is actually pretty nice.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Skim milk = white water

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i love skim milk, and i love diet coke. i'm so used to both that i can never go back to their more fattening versions (except for cooking -- i still use regular milk or heavy cream if a recipe calls for it).

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

flavored soy milk isn't so bad; maybe slightly better than skim. but whole milk is where it's at.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

also, i'm so used to using sweet & low (instead of sugar) that i always reach for it out of habit whether i'm watching my weight or not.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i love diet coke too (raised by diabetics -- drinking regular cokes seems reminiscient of guzzling maple syrup), but TAB is the jewel in the crown of diet drinks. Gotta love that battery-acid-type feeling in your throat.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

milk is GROSS. stop sleeping with the cows!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That UV-lavender ring around skimmed milk in a cereal bowl is just plain creepy.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

todd's right about soy milk - sooooo good. totally unlike the vile skim milk, which has merely watered down my iced espresso and not provided the creamy mellowness that i wanted so badly.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

skim milk = good for cereal, espresso-based drinks like lattes
whole milk = good for adding to coffee, cooking
soy milk = good with iced tea or chai, good to drink

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

soy milk is only acceptable in coffee.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

soda = gross

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

who loves HORCHATA?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

my friends always get horchata when we go the our local Salvadoran place but I've never tried it. it looks too crazy.

Bryan B Sure (Bryan), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't it just look like milk?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

skim milk = good for cereal

This is surely some kind of madness? It's the thing it's TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE for.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never had skim and never had whole. strictly 1 or 2% for me.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

skimmed milk=grey water

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

but sorta beige (x-post)

Bryan B Sure (Bryan), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

horchata crazy?? our coke machines dispense horchata! (it looks watery milk, with a very very slight golden tinge)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm. well, don't be scared. it's quite nice.

xpost

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"grey water" doesn't have protein and calcium!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

but it tastes better.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

horchatas are also amazing. i just cant drink 2 percent anymore, too creamy. 1 percent is acceptable.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

s&d dairy drinks:

search: doog / salty lassi
destroy: yoohoo

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

god, yoohoo is vile.
i like chocolate milk if it is regular milk with hershey syrup in it
(i know that yoohoo really isnt milk at all)

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i like egg creams.
s: making your own egg cream at sammy's roumanian steak house on chrystie street
d: the egg creams at ray's on avenue a that come in flavors like mango, blue raspberry, and strawberry

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

skim milk = good for cereal

Water is even better (or even greater madness?). Seriously I use water for this. I'm used to it now. Milk seems too sickly.

David (David), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Good God people, what have you become?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I never understood people putting orange juice in their cereal when out of milk. It's like they feel as if it *has* to be replaced by soemthing else traditionally breakfast-y even though h20 works fine and doesn't taste as gnarly. God, why not just pour bacon grease on your grape nuts.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i can imagine it with grape nuts, but that's it!! i'd rather just eat the cereal out the bag like trail mix with a big glass of water!!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yuk!!! x-post! i was talking about water not grease!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually just pour the cereal into a mug and drink it, or, more accurately, just breathe it in.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I only drink skim, and everything else seems too rich now. Coffee does need something a bit stronger though.

David - WATER FOR CEREAL?!! I remember using apple juice for cheerios as a kid when we were out of milk, but c'mon man.

(x-posts)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i have never seen or heard of anyone putting o.j. on cereal. fuck's sake, that's nasty. i know people who put water on grapenuts, though, claiming that it's how they're meant to be eaten.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Water on grape nuts is fine. You can also put a little sugar in with it and heat the whole mess up, deelish.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

um, i would rather eat cereal plain that have it with anything but milk. god.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't that the thing Herbie Hancock was espousing for vegans (juice on cereal)? fucking Herbie Hancock.

Bryan B Sure (Bryan), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

..classic or dud?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm better than this.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

not me. classic with the sticky out cap thing on the Tropicana cartons.

Bryan B Sure (Bryan), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you're not.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Skim milk = white water
-- El Diablo Robotico (nicolew1...)

Most OTM thing on this thread.

I switched to soy milk for everything a few years ago and haven't looked back. I'm not a vegetarian or anything, I just prefer the taste.

The orange juice thing has blown my mind.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've had milk of any kind in many years except in moments of extreme depression when I eat an entire box of Milanos or Fudge Covered Oreos or Mystic Mints(the latter two both refrigerated) and follow up with 2% or, gasp, whole milk, but it just makes me sick. I'm sure Soy or Rice Dream or whatever would be fine, but I just don't do that.

No, if I would, say, hypothetically, have any need to require an apology, it would involve, for instance, if someone made me eat at the Angelica Kitchen ever, due to their neurosis.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I only just read this. The OJ on cereal thought disgusts me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Lara does this.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No, if I would, say, hypothetically, have any need to require an apology, it would involve, for instance, if someone made me eat at the Angelica Kitchen ever, due to their neurosis.

because eating at a gourmet health food restaurant is way, way worse for you than eating a whole box of oreos, i know. sometimes i wonder how you ever put up with me.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is making me want to go out and neck a pint of full cream Jersey, for the lovely creamy goodness.

anything less than semi-skimmed on cereal is just masochism

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 March 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

and another thing, the amount of crap like sugars and refined starches etc in cereal makes putting fully skimmed on it a bit like putting a plaster on a gangrenous leg amputation.

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 March 2004 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've recently come out of a skimmed milk phase. It's fine in tea but I can't pretend I like it on cereal or by the glass. If you're on a low fat diet you should only be eating things that are 3% fat or less and semi-skimmed milk is under 2% fat, so I can't see the point in going for even less.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 11 March 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Wouldn't it allow you to eat a few 4% fat things?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 March 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I like skimmed milk, I find the other types claggy. Plus it also contains more calcium.

(What do you know of low fat diets Nick?)

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 11 March 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I am just trying to apply some scientific rigour.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 March 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't eat cereal for breakfast any more but I was raised on whole milk and don't even like semi-skimmed in TEA. I definitely eat a lot of butter and make sure what cheese I eat is of very high quality. However I've never had a weight problem or a dairy allergy to complicate this part of my life.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 11 March 2004 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Bring back green top; I drank that for the first 15 years of my life, and it didn't do me any harm. (That is not a cue for abuse BTW).

Then moved onto silver top when greentop was banned by the fascist pigdog tories. Then, started drinking semi-skimmed when at College and I loved it - refreshing without the slightly nauseating effect that creamy milk can have at times. Weirdly, my mum and dad made the switch too, even though they'd drunk full-cream milk for like 50 years each.

Skimmed milk is perhaps the most useless thing in the world; it makes awful tea-milk, and the cereal point has been made well. It is also rubbish in Horlicks and hot chocolate. Truly useless vanity 80s vanity product.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Semi-skimmed all the way. Suzy absolutely correct about creepy UV tinge around the edge of cereal bowl when skimmed is used.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you find this UV tinge? Are you eating cornflakes in a dodgy nightclub?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No, in the toilets of the Intrepid Fox.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I mostly drank skim growing up, but after I tasted 2% there was no going back, baby!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Skimmed milk seems to be more popular in the USA than here. No wonder you're all so skinny!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I always drink skimmed milk, I don't mind it. I was brought up on whole milk, but I couldn't drink it now, it's disgusting.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

butter milk (?) is gross. had it once, never again.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

skimmed milk = classic. soya milk = one of the foulest things i've ever tasted.

i really can't stand any other kind of milk on cereal/in tea. yuck.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Toby so OTM he could be Scrooge McDuck swimming about in his big vault of gold!

Skimmed milk is k-classic, but then again I don't like cream so I would say that. Anyway UV tinge to milk = ultra roxx0r!!!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I only use milk for cereal, and have been surprised to find that I prefer non-flavored soy milk to all others for this purpose. It just tastes right to me. It doesn't taste like milk at all, of course. And it's vile to drink straight, IMO.

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink skim milk straight ALL THE TIME.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)
