Small cars suck.

I got rear-ended today - I was stopped behind some cars at a light that goes onto a highway access road, a dumbass wasn't paying attention and rammed me from behind at 10-15mph (I'm guessing).

My F-150 was cheap, ugly, underpowered with the V6 and not fun to drive - but it can take being rear-ended like a pro. (New nickname - Jenna)

My bumper is pushed in and scratched up, but there's nothing else wrong. The guy's Honda Accord was fucked - both headlights busted, the front-end caved in, radiator bent backward, hood bent in half.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, I assume both you and the other driver are all right, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe if you didn't have a quasi-tank his car would've come out if it a lil better. that's why I hate the argument pro-SUV people make of them being safer. Yeah they are...at the expense of everyone else who drives.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

An F-150 is a truck.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah no shit

oops (Oops), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

but it's a pretty big truck and it has a high profile (not judging anyone, but still).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, the Accord is not exactly a "small" car.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My Mom's ride. She's the ultimate Hockey Mom. She used to buy Big Macs for everyone even though she don't eat McDonalds. Holla!

LC, Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to have a truck for work - five-gallon buckets of paint and 8-foot sheets of drywall don't fit in the Mini Cooper S I lust after. I'm right there with you in hating on one-person Hummers and Escalades. My F-150 really isn't that large or high - about as tall overall as a Ranger pickup, and not much larger, just a couple of feet longer. (I got the lowest-grade model.)

And oops, you'd have some "yr partially at fault" room if I had hit someone else. I was stopped, he hit me. I'm glad I've got a 'tank,' cuz I can still drive to work tomorrow.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

But ok, I'm the asshole.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You don't have to justify your truck-driving, milo - F-150's are great trucks. Have you seen Busta Rhymes' F-150?

LC, Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but I can imagine.

Oh, and yeah, we're both fine. Unless his insurance tries to dick me around - then my neck hurts a little.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

My main problem is the every increasing number of high-profile vehicles (mostly single driver SUVs) which block my view of the traffic ahead. Trucks should be more like this! http://www.elcaminostore.com/Cars/68-72/El-Camino-right-side.jpg

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to own a Ranger, but I sold it. It was impossible to fit into the parking spot in my building so I ended up parking it on the street all the time. Plus the insurance was a lot. I love trucks though. F-150s are cool, but I think that's too much truck for me.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not criticizing you for driving a truck or saying it's your fault, milo, but don't you think his car would be less damaged if you were also driving a car? I'm just puzzled by you saying 'small cars suck' when 'big cars/trucks' are the ones doing people harm.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps, people who cannot drive suck?

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

My insurance as of my next policy period drops just below $100/month for full coverage. It feels like a milestone of some kind.

But my big truck didn't do anyone harm. 'Small cars suck' was just a joke - "haha, hit me and see what happens, puny earthling-car."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

New, small cars are generally made v. poorly though. I'm sure that this is not news.

It is unrealistic to say that everyone should drive newer, smaller cars.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

but i'm getting a sense of some sick pervsion involving you being proud that your truck can take a hit while anything it comes in contact with is destroyed.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Milo do you have the supercab? I found it pretty urgent & key. I'd much rather have a ranger with a supercab than an F-150 without.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

As for Hummers and such, I just hate egos on display - It offends me. And I'd be fine if everyone had to drive a Prius.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the Ranger with the supercab is nice.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude if you're gonna get a ranger I'd splurge on a Dodge Dakota SS. I raced one on the Sea-to-Sky hwy for about half an hour and I was just amazed at the performance it had in it. I was in a fucking SUPRA no less.

LC, Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't see the difference between a flashy car and a flashy outfit and a nice haircut ... etc. etc. ad nauseum.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like trucks with extended/supercabs. I've had to drive a Dodge supercab a few times and the visibility is awful. I don't mind not being able to cram three more people in (if they're that desperate to ride, hop in the back, else we're taking someone else's vehicle), and I've got a locking toolbox for storage.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad was always trying to get me to go Dodge, too. He knows more about cars than me so I probably should listen to him. I'm just crazy 'bout a Ford truck!

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The latest Dodge body style is fugly.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I think that's it. I don't like the bodies.

I love the old A-body though!!

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The most homoerotic moment of recent memory was my bodybuilder friend sliding his hands down the sides of my torso and observing, "You got a nice A-frame there - we could definitely build on that."

LC, Thursday, 11 March 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I would rather push a thousand pins up my nose than be forced/coerced into driving a small vehicle. First of all, the legroom would be an absolute killer. Secondly, I would have ZERO control of the vehicle because I'm so used to working to steer and accelerate vehicles that I would probably end up taking off like a bullet train every time the light changed from red to green or making a 270 degree turn anytime I wanted to turn. Third, I love heavy vehicles -- the Oldsmobile Eighty Eight and Buick Park Avenue are my favorite cars.

Dodge trucks always seem to rank highest when it comes to safety rankings, but I've always been a proponent of Chevy trucks. The Silverado looks beautiful to me, especially the black ones. If I had to get another vehicle, I would seriously consider a Silverado. I see F-150s all over the place. Those are the most popular trucks in the city, I think.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"I don't like trucks with extended/supercabs."

GMC Senoma's are really cool. It is kind of like a midsized sedan with a pickup bed.

earlnash, Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, I love my tiny 2 door civic & how it turns on a dime. Add that to my NJ-bred ability to cut my way into Seattle traffic & I'm a happy driver. (I am not so good at cutting into lanes in NJ these days-- it's too easy out here. I start thinking I'm good at it out here b/c you even point a headlight at a spot in a lane & they let you in... then I go home, and nearly get the passenger side of my car taken off merging in. (; )

I've driven bigger cars, and they all had HUGE blind spots and drove like mushy tanks. no thank you.

(yeah I know James Dean died in one, but still, PHWOAAAR)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 11 March 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Dee almost any car will handle better than almost any truck/SUV. Legroom? How tall are you? I have a friend who's 6'3", drove a Honda Civic for years and never had any complaints.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 11 March 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

All you people are on crack. Study some physics: front or rear of car is deformed in wreck = less force of accident is transfered to the driver. Years ago, I was rear-ended at speed in my father's Mercedes by a big old Buick land yacht. The Buick barely had a scratch and the damage to the Mercedes was severe, but I walked away and the Buick driver left the scene in an ambulance.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 11 March 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

This is true. Most modern cars are designed to crumple at the front and rear upon impact.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 11 March 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer, those car-truck freak hybrids like the one you posted are like the most beautiful things in the world. They are so popular in Phoenix, it is strange.

Allyzay, Thursday, 11 March 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Dee, that's a fucked-up attitude. How tall are you? I've only ever driven small cars and I'm 6 foot with long legs. I'm sure you could learn to drive one properly, what with them being easier in almost every respect than monster truxxx.

It's people with this kind of attitude who should be taxed to the hilt for their luxury vehicle unless they can prove they have 3+ children/substantial building or farming materials that need to be carted around. Think of others for a change.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i drove a toyota corolla the other day and thought THAT was huge!!!

had a Suzuki Swift before - it's so cute and tiny but some fucker (probably in a truck) ran into the back of it while it was parked and it got written off.

but then again hey i would totally drive a truck if someone buys me one - i'm thinking of starting a career driving on of those trucks in the picture above, in fact!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I love all cars really. I hate having to fill them up though, so I like smaller cars. I drive a 95 Olds 88 and it's a boat but it gets 30+ on the highway. I admit I do like a 6-cylinder engine rather than a 4, maybe that's selfish. I do love those Smart cars they have in europe (like madchen's pic above) and I wish you could get them here! I also kinda wish I had a tiny truck like the '81 Ford Courier I drove in high school--light, nimble, great fuel economy and you could take it off-roading (lotsa dirt roads where I grew up)...I tend to be kinda rough on cars, maybe because my formative driving years were in trucks. Would LOVE an el camino like the one Spencer posted.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a black and hot pink El Camino parked on my block. It's so awesome.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

potential drivers of large vehicles should have seperate road tests. all suv's need to be transparent

kephm, Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I am closer to thinking "Small cars suck."

My fallback position is that one should own the most efficient/appropriate vehicle for the uses to which it will be put. For this reason 95% of current SUVs are an abomination.

I did enjoy watching some moron rip the bumper off of his brand new not-offroad-suitable Dodge Durango. He was in a string of 4-wheelers at Jeep Safari week in Utah. That rocked. The 4-wheelers in the caravan were mocking him.

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa!

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Kephm OTM - Escalades, Navigators, Suburbans, F-250s+/equiv. and the ilk need a separate driving test. I'd even be okay with including F-150s, but there's a world of difference in those and the larger vehicles.

My primary frustration in driving is people who are scared to be on the road for one reason or another - whether that's an inability to drive their big-ass vehicle or just being intimidated by traffic. Get off the fucking road and outta my way.

(God punishes the prideful, apparently - the body shop's estimate on my truck is $1500+, so I have to argue with this guy's insurance company.)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And an oil change.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

spending the weekend snuggled up with the 2004 cars issue of Consumer Reports, it's quite intoxicating. It appears they just don't make tiny light pickups like my old Ford Courier anymore. :(

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the Ranger too big for you? The 4-cylinder/no-options model is tiny.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 13 March 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

haha after I typed that I saw the ranger! I'm not really looking to buy right now, I just like looking at car magazines.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 13 March 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

In a car, one gets acclimated to many things.

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Saturday, 13 March 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
THIS IS NOT FUCKING POSSIBLE.

I just got rear-ended AGAIN. By a Toyota this time. If I see a Nissan within three blocks of me, I'm making a run for it.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 25 June 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I was still in the process of arguing with the first insurance company. They had neglected to notice that the bumper had gouged into my right rear quarter-panel, which then needed fixing and repainting (ie they wrote $890, the body shop I went to said $1500ish).

Now, should I just take the $890 and buy myself something pretty, and just let that matter drop entirely (with the new company fixing the entire deal), or is it possible to keep fighting, even though the original evidence doesn't exist?
