So it's my birthday on April 8th and I want to get lots of people together in Central London. I need a pub or place that meets these criteria:

- Is central
- Serves nice bouze
- Has a pool table or darts
- Has a room I could book
- Would have some form of means to play music as brought by guests in Club FT stylee

Admittedly, the only place I can think of the is SOAS which I suspect is only to be used for Ptee birthdays. Any more for any more? I want to get it all sorted today and get an email out and about and in people's diaries etc.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Newman Street Blue Posts is bookable, has darts, is central and has Sam Smith's lovely beers.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This is true. It has a quizzer too. And Spanish bars are nearby...but not music facilities

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it has a cd player and amplifier. Could you not borrow a couple of cd decks and a mixer from someone?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Humph. Try to hijack the week of my birthday, are you? Well see if you get invited to my pyjama and toga party, then!

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i know it's a chain and stuff but the O'neills on Conway Street (near warren st. tube) is so nice - it has an upstairs room which is most probably bookable - it has pool table and it's so nice and had TABLE SERVICE last time I was there. amazing.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

O'Neills doesn't sell nice beer.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Table service in pubs is wrong.

robster (robster), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

DB, there's more than likely going to be a party of some kind the Friday or Saturday after that too. Details to follow.....

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

DB, does the Betsey Trotwood still do this?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

They charge stupid money for the equipment they arrange

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

No pool table, but downstairs at the Fitzroy, home of Ewing's infamous pre-wedding party had a good setup. Not ideal if you want to get more than about thirty-forty people in there though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You still have to borrow the cd players/mixer/amp/speakers though.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

If you need to hire/borrow a PA and soundman, this would be a perfect excuse to contact ::ha-hem:: ::caff caff:: Percy the Adorable Soundman.

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

What about here?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh that sounds rather nice Dave! Keep me away from Galaxian though...

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It duz doesn't it. UNless someone can give me a good reason why this doesn't work, I'm goiong to phone ahead...

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Shouldn't you be outsourcing that to Stevem?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be there. Just as long as you lovely people don't forget my birthday at the GHS on Tuesday 16th!!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

why have you not mentioned this before Mark??

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What, my birthday celebration, downstairs at the Glasshouse Stores from 6pm on Tuesday 16th?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem = ILX Accenture - outsourcing, consultancy, crap hair, strange tracksuit tops.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That's fighting talk, that is.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn I will be in Glasgee for this.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone confirm or deny that the following day is Good Friday, ergo no work?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. This is why I haf picked this day as everyone will be demob happy.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

that weekend is going to be very very messy

/whisper - sten party - friday or saturday after

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Robster & I will not be making it any messier. We will instead be in bucolic South Wales eating Easter Eggs with my mum and maybe looking at castles and things. Boohoo, no parties.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

crap hair?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be in church getting Maundy Money from an old woman.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Arf. My mum will be escaping from the dreaded Office for National Stas/Patent Office Maundy Thursday Sports Day.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Gazza, did you know that your birthday is immediately after the START OF THE NEW TAX YEAR?

the bluefox, Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. What are the fiscal implications of this? Do we all have super duper budgets to embezzle and spend on presents for me?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Grrrrrr. Good Friday. Easter Saturday. All that religious Death crap has a real way of spoiling your birthday.

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't make it, i'm going to be in the states from the 8-18th. boo.

kate, when's the pyjama party?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Well it's here from about 5 on THURSDAY 8TH APRIL. Bring presents and cards to celebrate me becoming a 30 year old.

Right. Need those coming to reprazent for numbers like. Also, anyone got any musical type players sound systems, or know where to get em? The alternative is that I do 6 CDs worth of music and hand them to the bar staff and they play them in theie 6CD sound system at random in a People's Republic of Disco litre kinda way. I quite like this idea TBH so RSVP with 4 songs you want played. Only special choons allowed before I was born.

Finally, I was so taken with Ptee's idea of doing a quiz about himself, I think I might do one about myself. Sorry. It won't last long, but I have a large ego to feed.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Live and Let Die
2. to be continued!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall be there, resplendent in all my finery.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(Will there be Real People as well as Interweb Mentalists?)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Football mentalists!!!!!

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i should be able to make this and would enjoy doing just that.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This is presumably the Guns and Roses Version, as the Wings one is from 1973, so a case must be made for it being a special choon.

Note to lost ILM users - move along there's nothing to see here

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There will be real people drawn from the worlds of London football fans (with particular reference to AFC Wimbledon), some people who happened to be at Lancaster University between 1992-95 and other assorted non-interweb people. All suffer from varying degrees of mentalism.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Just out of interest what was result of the top of the table six-pointer last night?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

1-1. They will be happier with the result, but we're happier with what it means championship-wise. 13 points and a game in hand ahead. Sorted.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Honours even, a point apiece, fair result, mustn't grumble, fucking inbred oxfordshire bastards.

Action on video here

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah! I will most likely be in attendance.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to catch the Eurostar at 5am the day after this. Do I:

a) Get a good night's sleep; or
b) Decide that I may as well stay up ALL NIGHT?

We will see.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish that everything made me nostalgically recall Granada Soccernight with Elton Welsby.

I have never seen it, in truth.

It's true, about the fool, and about it being praise. I might explain properly, one day, in a way.

While looking over the quiz sheets I was struck by what felt to me like the 'richness' of Boyle's life.

I am using the word 'rich' as TH used the word 'poor'. Or am I?

Something else that happened was a Carter USM top 5 contest, I mean, comparison.

It's a shame about the Railway Children.

the blissfox, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy Birthday Dave I am sorry that I missed it. I tried to go but I went to the wrong Castle, realised I was drunk and gave up.

Anyway I hope that you had a good time and ta for inviting me.

PM me sometime as although I'm hideously stressed at work I have missed your cheery messenger chats.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the Pinefox, I was asked by Tom to name my top 5 Carter songs, and his opinion of me obviously went down when I said that I could not even name a top 1.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the only title from that CD i KNOW i've heard is GHP's Rapture Riders and i only just heard that for the first time about an hour ago now - and jolly nice it was too. losing touch? me? what? anyway i'm intrigued and wouldn't mind hearing the rest.

So, OK, dumb question time, but what the heck do you use to strip the vocals/music out so perfectly? Cause even the riff-stripping is perfect. Is there some kind of software that does this automatically or am I being thick? I know nothing of this world...

if no acapella is already available (via CD/downloading) there is a way to isolate the vocal using software provided you have an instrumental version of the track to invert with the original, but when i tried it ages ago it didn't work - i didn't understand it then but i think i do now. my boss's boss was talking about a neat programme his mate uses to extract the vocals from songs so he can sing over them on his karaoke machine, but don't know the name.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's because nowadays recording and mixing is done on PCs, so getting a vocal track is just a matter of getting it via a nice/evil studio techie and a disc or net link.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Artists have almost *always* made instrumental only tracks, for things like television performances and the like, so that the vocal can be added live to provide an illusion of a live performance, while not leaving the sound entirely up to the foibles of notoriously bad television studio sound. I thought maybe that sound-stripping technology might have improved to the point where the average person with a PC could do it...

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

my birthday was on April 9th and i did nothing

CAss (CAss), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
how much does it cost to get from london stanstead to london city centre?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

About £15 last time I looked.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Lots of money if you go on the Stansted Express (£20 or so?). It's cheaper if you get the slow, regular service.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Revive!

It's my 31st birthday on Friday 8th April, and whilst no biggie like a 30th, it's still quite important to me nonetheless, being one of an ever decreasing number of such days.

I've booked the upstairs room at the Calthorpe Arms on Grays Inn Road, which is here>.

There's no fancy stuff involved, no quizzes or choon choosing like last year. Just a pub, a room, beer (Youngs, for those who care) and chat. Maybe a CD player, but I haven't been able to confirm it.

The Calthorpe is also very near the Pakenham Arms, where they serve booze until 1am, being a postie's pub. Alternatively, anyone suggesting indie dancing at the Borderline afterwards would be very bad indeed, but might be successful in luring mea few people there.

It's handily placed for transport, being 10 minutes from Kings Cross, and on bus routes taking you to London Bridge, Blackfriars and Waterloo East, so anyone concocting excuses will have to use better ones than 'I can't get home' afterwards. You might have to confess that you just don't like me. Anyone who would like to come is more than welcome to let me know in advance, which helps me decide whether we'll have enough people to open the upstairs bar.

Action starts at 6pm - hope to see you there and then. Feel free to bring friends, partners, lovers etc.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh alright then. This is my first Friday in my new job, so it might be an idea to go drinking with work people first, but its only round the corner, innit?

I might be Seal Clubbing as well but that might be a problem if I'm going to be drinking from 5.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I have used the Sacred Power to put pub details in the title as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Well done. I ph34r ur mod skillz

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Man, I could go!

That'll be a year since my last FAP!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I'll be there, for certain.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Bump.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

What time are people getting there? I am not working tomorrow so can choose my own time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

I shall be there at 6, having advised this as the start time. Twould be rude not to really.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

About 8 for me, I think. I may have new work drinks first and have to go home and sort out music for tonight as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 8 April 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

Augh Dave! You sneaked this in when I was in Scotland, so I didn't know and now I've not made you cake or nuffink! I feel TERRIBLE. Will try to pop in later though after giving my sister her Easter egg from our dad.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 8 April 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

Don't know about this, got to preserve funds for trip to Scotland next week

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Argh, there's a birthday BBQ in Hackney tonight... (my god, I am going to be at three birthday parties in a row in Hackney this weekend. Why don't I just move there already) so I may have to miss this. Have a good one, Dave.

Adherents of the Repeated Kate (kate), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

I am going to be there as early as possible. Stress over my travel arrangements is giving me the major thirsties.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

I shall be babysitting my own baby. I hope to dandle her on my knee as we both chuckle contentedly at The Two Ronnies Sketchbook. But I hope you have a happy birthday.

(You have surpassed yourself, Dadaismus.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

I have? How did I manage that?

Dadrock, Meshach and Abednego (Dada), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Congratulations btw Mr Miller

Plot: I'm going up to Newcastle, like last year. Different: This time its the coach from Victoria. Sets off 23:30.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Thanks all for coming - I had a great time, and don't have a hangover. Thanks to Matt for Club Seal - that was good too, especially playing The Only Ones. No Tart Tart sob sob. Apols if I didn't speak to you as much as might have liked.

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 9 April 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

yeh sorry i didn't talk to you much either DB, i was in a slump of sorts, glad it was a good night tho.

$V£N! (blueski), Saturday, 9 April 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Apologies for outrageous drunkenness after having demolished half a crate of free beer during my set. I don't actually remember playing The Only Ones at all.

We are taking Club Seal to the Shepherd's Bush Empire later in the month, which will be proper rocking. Downside = it is after an Embrace gig.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 9 April 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)
