There isn't a way to save Macromedia Flash animations, is there?

Because there's this one pop-up ad about Best Buy's digital music services (I think I got it from Slate) that just mesmerizes me. For ten seconds, a woman, maybe in her early thirties, dyed blonde it seems, beret, white shirt and sweater, bops around with headphones in her ears and an MP3 player in her upright hand. She silently sings a word or two of whatever she's hearing, usually looking up, sometimes turning away, sometimes looking right at you, always smiling. Her blithe happiness is so transparently phony but so appealingly utopian (especially since I'm in a rotten mood) I just can't stand it. I want to save it because know once I click off the ad or turn off the computer. I'll probably never see it again, such are the transient nature of these ads.

Help?

What you can try to do is view the source and find out what the file is - usually ends in ".swf". However this doesn't always work.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It depends.. if you're using IE on Windows, you can go to your Temporary Internet Folder... (which is usually under Documents And Settings/[Your Name]/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Items or something like that, and then sort that humungous folder by date... most recent last.. then scroll to the bottom, and there should be a SWF file you can grab.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

And doing what Spencer recommended above will help with you the name of the file in case there are a lot of SWF files in that folder... usually companies will pretty easily shut off access to SWF files directly as a URL, but grabbing it from you local cache after loading it is usually not too difficult and more reliable.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

also, when you try to play back the SWF file, it may ask you which application to use to open it.. just choose IE... for someone reason (unless you have Flash, the developer studio software, installed on your machine), you can't just double click on it and have it run.. but you can easily get around it the former way.

(haha, again, this is all just Windows specific... this advice might all be blowing into the wind)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(but surely, Elvis T can give you the Mac way if that is the way you follow)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't remember if you can do this in other browsers, but in Safari, you can go to View - Activity and it lists the files on each page that it has downloaded/is downloading.

Spencer & deeb's advice worked. Thanks! Let me see if I can do a few screen captures and post them to this thread...hold on...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe you could post the link to where it's hosted too

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, if you have hosting space, URL us to the SWF itself. :) :)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't you understand? THIS IS EVERYTHING THE HEAVENLY JUKEBOX EVER PROMISED!!!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

IPod and/or Best Buy marketing would totally slay on sales if they just had un-made-up people in their underwear dancing to their iPods in their bedrooms instead.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It reminds me of Asian adverts. I like it.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to see the outtakes of the auditions for that actor/actress position that didn't make the cut.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this ad will do very well.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i am so in love with that ad

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My friend Colin insists she says "I Love You" about half way through.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

No, she's saying she loves me.

Leee the Lee (Leee), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what he said too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the music is slightly off.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Now semi-permanently mirrored here, in case taken down. She is totally and embarassingly high on the marriage list.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the music is slightly off.

The low-end seems really distorted, though that could also be the result of "ray-gun" sounds, plus the keyboards have a slight "atonal" quality.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You chaps have too much time on your hands. Who has masturbated to it, go on, fess up!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I may have an alibi.

So, would right clicking and saving work on this?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

No, do what Spencer and db suggest above...that is, if you have a PC and not a Mac.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It would work if you then open it as a file in your browser, no?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

well, it did work so ner.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Amusing, this thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

well it did work, but not exactly how it should have!!!

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

how not so?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean too many cats and not enough best buy advertisement. The name of the Elbow song confused me into thinking it was the Best Buy ad.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 12 March 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)
