Why not apple juice?

They make 'margaritas' out of pomegranate juice, for chrissakes... so why isn't apple juice used to make cocktails? Crisp, tart yet sweet, readily available and cheap.. seems like it would be good with vodka, whisky, rum, etc., at least as good as orange juice.

(I know there's apple martinis, but they don't use juice, do they?)

I once mixed apple juice and white wine for an impromptu drink (this was while I was serving drinks at a work-related party). And years ago I read a recipe for a cocktail that combined sparkling apple cider with calvados -- the author described it as an apple cognate of a champagne cocktail.

apple juice + vodka = easy life.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had 'Apple Pies' in the awesome Polish place on Cowley - Polish pure spirit, apple juice, loads of cinnamon on top. Ass was kicked.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

they have a variation on that at a bar near my house. tasty & lethal!

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a great thread title, somewhat disappointing thread (not bad just doesn't live up to the title.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Because apple juice sucks. I'm sorry.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple Juice + Jim Beam

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple Schnapps with cranberry juice sounds like a promising cocktail.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 12 March 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I like apple juice, even though it looks and sometimes even smells like urine.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Gabbneb OTM.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple juice is the juice I drink the most. Orange juice has too much bite. Apple juice is nice and mellow. I've never had it in mixed drinks though.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

apple juice should only be drunk from small cans with foil pull-tops

Bryan B Sure (Bryan), Friday, 12 March 2004 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

as Madchen will come in and say in a minute - Apple juice and bison grass vodka mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

chris (chris), Friday, 12 March 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple is a rather complicated taste compared to citrus juice, I think. It's like the wine of common fruits. Wine is not a common cocktail ingredient either.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 March 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple juice and amaretto is a great cocktail, and is improved further by the addition of some elderflower syrup (poncy but available from IKEA) - it tastes like Haribo Sour Apple sweets.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 12 March 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple juice is totally underrated. It never occurs to me to buy any, I always go directly for orange, being the rockist that I am.

I will rectify this when I go to Sainsbury's this weekend.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Come to Frankfurt. Apples & booze are a local speciality; there are plenty of apple wine & apple juice based cocktails available in the bars, and bottled alcopops everywhere. I particularly like the apple wine/champagne hybrids two local apple wine makers are bottling these days.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 12 March 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

im at apple pants my alcohol ok

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 12 March 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

TATANKA! (thank you Cabbage) You have to use fresh apple juice, none of your 'from concentrate' brown rubbidge. There's something about the taste of the bison grass that goes really well with apple juice. Arse, still five hours and ten minutes before I can get to some (realistically add another 45 mins because I can't go swigging vodka on the bus home).

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 12 March 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't you heard of "Apple Jacks"? One of my fave breakfast cereals as a kid, but also a nice cocktail - Apple Juice and Jack Daniels (ModJ is close with the Jim Beam)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 12 March 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the use of the apple in adult beverages is well covered in this thing we call CIDER.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 12 March 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to drink Gin and apple juice at university - a bit of an acquired taste, but interesting nevertheless.

I had a pear and cinnamon daiquiri (GIRL'S DRINK) at the Charlotte Street hotel and it was fucking amazing. Mmm, pear, fruit of my youth - where do you belong in the 21st century?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 12 March 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

In my mouth.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

By which I mean that I love pears.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Blimey, Madchen's come over all dirty sex.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

How dare she challenge your crown!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 12 March 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

He has a crown?

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 12 March 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not apple juice? BECAUSE IT IS A BEVERAGE FOR CHILDREN, that's why!

I can't seem to separate the smell of apple juice from the smell of dirty diapers. The smell of one conjures up the smell of the other. Tres unappetizing.

quincie, Friday, 12 March 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Bbbbut milk is also a beverage for children!

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 March 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

er, yeah

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 March 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple juice is truly fantastic, it seems to go even colder than orange juice in the fridge, though this could be entirely my imagination.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It is not your imagination.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't get as cold as milk though. But apple juice is better than milk.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I like milk, apple juice, and orange juice. I never let them find out about each other though.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 March 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Very wise. Introducing milk and orange juice to each other has very unpleasant results.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

We've all done it, bleary eyed, with a bowl of weetabix before, I THOUGHT IT WAS THE MILK!

Actually before anyone says anything the time I remember doing it I was actually adding more milk, which actually was orange juice. Now in those days milk and orange juice came in the same type of carton.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 March 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple juice goes very well indeed with a lot of those poncey new-fangled fruit and nut type cereals, I've found. Better than milk, in fact.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 March 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

apple juice+jack daniels=apple jacks
