How much would you need to be paid to:

- go to a UB40 greatest hits concert?

- go to a UB40 greatest hits concert which was being filmed and stand in the front row?

- go to a UB40 greatest hits concert which was being filmed and stand in the front row and have to go and dance on stage with Ali Campbell?

- have your photo appear on a UB40 greatest hits record on the cover with you having a big smile indicating how much you loved the greatest hits of UB40 wearing a T-Shirt saying "I LIKE UB40 MORE THAN ANY OTHER BAND" and being hugged by Ali Campbell?

"Greatest Hits" should be taken to include "Kingston Town" and "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" and many others I'm sure you're familiar with.

These questions were posted to Tim Hopkins last night.

Tom, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Posed, rather.

Tom, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tim's instant breezy answer = actually he didn't have to pay much at all, most of it was covered by the fan-club life-membership fee, tho the hugging had of course been smoothed thru by the blowjob(s).

Geoff, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Go to a UB40 concert = £60

Go to a UB40 greatest hits concert which was being filmed and stand in the front row = £150

Go to a UB40 greatest hits concert which was being filmed and stand in the front row and have to go and dance on stage with Ali Campbell = £5000

Have your photo appear on a UB40 greatest hits record on the cover with you having a big smile indicating how much you loved the greatest hits of UB40 wearing a T-Shirt saying "I LIKE UB40 MORE THAN ANY OTHER BAND" and being hugged by Ali Campbell = £100,000

Red red wine! oh yeah!

james, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ten pints and I'm anyone's, even Ali Campbell.

So I guess that sets my price at around 25 quid (30 at gig prices).

Any takers?

Well it depends - if the new cool is to be so uncool as to be really cool, well then nothing of course because I would clearly be the coolest person on the planet at that point. However, I *suspect* that we've moved on from that and now the new cool is to avoid being uncool to look cool, cool actually is what we're told is cool, and no one is telling us that UB40 is cool, so I'd not be caught there dead, even for millions. But then it occurs, what if what's actually cool is no longer cool because that gets old as fast as anything else, and what's ironically cool because it's so uncool is no longer cool, then there's nothing left that can be categorized as either cool or uncool except UB40 because I don't really like them at all, so I'd probably just stay home - unless we're talking like five figures or something...

If they ever come back to the USA, maybe someone could tip off Attorney General Asscrotch that they are dangerous aliens and he can have them detained in communicado for a week and deported without due process. Surely, having radio stations play "Red Red Wine" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" must be a terrorist act of some kind. And the beauty of it is, the ACLU wouldn't lift a finger to help 'em out!

(And for good measure let's deport Morrissey too, while we're at it and have the mechanism set up!)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

£4.50 per hour. I have no principles left.

Bill, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I R feeling sick @ thought of this!

Fatnick not liking UB40, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fatnick, you are too principled, Tom is offering you money to see UB40, take it!!! :)

james, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom is doing no such thing! Tom is merely asking a question.

Tom, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would do it all for free. Red red wine kicks ass

Mike Hanle y, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And I'll bet you already have the T-shirt too don't you Hanleeee y?

Kim, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I you hook me up with Robert Mapplethorpe; I am more than willing to take off my kit while UB40 plays at top volume in the same room.

helen fordsdale, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What happened last night then?

DG, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You will be amazed to discover DG that we visited a public house.

Tom, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Never!

DG, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

here's another question: how much money would you shag ali campbell for?

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about 'how much money would it take for you use to Ali Campbell to shag someone'?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Change 'use to' to 'to use' and that might make a marginal bit more sense.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that would involve some mean amounts of hatred. do you really hate someone enough to wish ali campbell on them?

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually Kim, I find their recent works unacceptable. I only like their early stuff

Mike Hanle y, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am a one-inch head.

Ali Campbell, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I am a one-inch head."

There! A much better T-shirt slogan.

Kim, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a good UB40 shirt would say " Lick where it hurts...ME CUNT!"

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, no (Manle y) Hanle y, can't you see? That would be so incredibly better if it were broken up into TWO T-shirts.

Kim, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wouldn't be very wearbale if broken into two now wouldit?

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You mean they sang more the just Red Red Wine?

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

twenty years pass...

Astro died! The legendary toaster from UB40 (the guy that says red red wine makes me feel so fine). The press release is really weird saying he died "following a very short illness." What are they trying to say there? Covid? I know a guitar player just left Ali and Astro's version of UB40 a few months ago because he (the guitar player) link refused to get vax'd.

Apologies for the confusion. I have left @UB40 Featuring Ali and Astro. pic.twitter.com/VU8AMB6Z6I

His death is getting overshadowed by the other "astro" news. Poor guy! RIP Astro!

We are absolutely devastated and completely heartbroken to have to tell you that our beloved Astro has today passed away after a very short illness. The world will never be the same without him.

We ask you to please respect his family’s privacy at this incredibly difficult time. pic.twitter.com/GRDjtApyzy
