i'm surprised pigs in a blanket haven't been mentioned yet, and bacon-wrapped water chesnuts on frilly toothpicks and swedish meatballs. holiday parties when i was a child were glutted with such '50s delicacies.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

BOILED WHOLE CRAWFISH goddammit i want some

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

OTM! I was just going to say hot boiled crawfish. MMMMMMmmmm, it'll be a month and a half before I get some.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The best part of crawfish season just started up in New Orleans :/

Boiled crawfish, boiled shrimp, buffalo wings, deep-fried soft-shell crabs (do they count? they're a little expensive for appetizers/finger foods, but I never get them as the entree), fried ravioli, steak fingers, potstickers, bloomin onions from places that do em really well, fried green tomatoes, fresh French fries with malt vinegar and salt.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Deep-fried just-about-anything! Fried mushrooms, fried pickles, fried cauliflower, fried squash, fried zucchini, fried mozz, fried raviolis, hush puppies, etc, etc...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, my good gosh, boudin balls. Boudin, too, but especially boudin balls.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

If sweet stuff counts, then beignets, praline turtles, lemon squares, and blueberry tarts.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

onion rings from virgil's and sweet potato fries from whatever the fuck that place was in wildwood

Fried scallops, ohmygod

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

a cocktail stick, on which are skewered two olives, two mild chillis and an anchovy - oh my god

also good - small piece of french bread - two small pieces of fish - one pretty solid the other smoked salmon, on top of that some elvers fried in garlic and chilli flakes and then a little caviar sprinkled on top. All for €1.15

chris (chris), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

anything with those midget corns

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I figured that sweet stuff is finger food sometimes, so it should count.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

swedish meatballs

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Martinis count as food, yes?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

a big yes to fried pickle spears. they sound weird but they're some good eating.

xpost

i think my mom had a special dish for swedish meatballs, which was often used in tandem with her peter max fondue pot.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm making tilapia burritos for dinner. And I'm going to eat them with my fingers. Same for the mashed potatos.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

DIM SUM (if that qualifies) (with my chopstick skills, everything becomes finger food) (the Dim Sum restaurant closest to my condo and my heart went from offering authentic Dim Sum-like cuisine to coughing up some bastardized American Chinese food amalgam of crapshit from fucksville, complete w/ shit ass buffet line fare - featuring GOLDEN FINGERS and FRIED CHICKEN MINI-DRUMSTICKS and ONION RINGS WHAT NO FREEDOM FRIES YOU BASTARDS? - and plastic EVERYTHING AND "service" that amounts to going up to the counter, placing an order, and having the server throw your sad li'l Dim Sum offerings on a cafeteria tray and shoo you away) (the last / final time I went there, I wept openly in my heart and poured out some Green Tea in remembrance of what once was) (I should've worn my BEEFCAKE! t-shirt, too).

Things you gotta do to pay the rent...

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the worst part of it, JV! Before the switch, the place was always PACKED! My friend & I would go there for Sunday lunch every so often, but we'd have to get there before noon before the lunch crowd came in - between 12 and 1, there would be at least 20-25 people waiting near the front door for some Dim Sum luv. Now, with the "new & improved" menu, the place is empty. Come 12:30, excepting a few post-church families sucking down egg rolls, there are plenty of vacancies (and this AFTER they turned one of the nook dining areas into The Counter of Shame). Like I said, weep.

Regarding Spencer's not-so-secret shame - Chili's Southwestern Egg Rolls. Mmm oozy. And the green sauce is nummy in an unnatural carcinogenic way.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Off-topic kinda, but is Chili's worth going to at all, if only for appetizers and beer? Other than the boneless buffalo wings in an airport (num), I haven't been to one in maybe eight years or so, and wasn't crazy about it then -- but there's one here in town ... and those boneless buffalo wings were pretty damn good ...

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

artichoke dip with melba toast

The one time I went to a Chili's I liked their tortilla soup. I can't remember what else I had.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Just read this whole thread and what sticks in my mind is Cheez Whiz and Celery. I would pay $12 for a small platter. Right now.

Aaron A., Friday, 12 March 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Celery and sriracha, man.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Jiaozi! (Chinese dumplings, fried or boiled according to preference, filled with all manner of v. finely diced vegetables and meats)

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

devilled eggs are proof of a loving god. i haven't had them in a few years, and i think i might have to make some tonight.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Skimming this thread staves off the ravenous hunger. Sorta.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

devilled eggs belong in the same league as yr water chestnuts&bacon, lauren, as an abomination before god. anyone who ruins a perfectly good egg with mayonaise and boiling ought to be smacked.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

another vote for deviled eggs, and also bacon-wrapped bay scallops.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 4 December 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Chicken satay with peanut sauce is a great one. I spent a day slicing up, skewering and marinating six pounds of chicken for a party once, and it was all hoovered up in about 20 minutes.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 4 December 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I don't know whether to be disgusted or charmed by the event-planning kinds of cookbooks that suggest setting out appetizer-sized servings of SOUP in little Chinese soup ladles. It's so whimsically ridiculous that I should LOVE it, but I don't have a dishwasher and I KNOW those 35 ladles I'd have to buy at Pearl River Mart would get tossed. Plus, STORING THEM for another year until next fabulous party? No thanks.

I'm stuffed with Cuban sandwich & Christmas cookies and this thread STILL makes me crave!!

Laurel (Laurel), Sunday, 4 December 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Results 1 - 10 of about 527,000 for peanut butter kiss death.

Rock Hardy Satay Party Littered With Bodies

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

That was a hell of a fun party. I finally got a born again xtian to stop and think about what I was saying. Plus, good food, bouze, music and more food.

I haven't read the whole thread. Has anybody mentioned marinated mushrooms? Soak 'em in a nice lemony thyme-y vinaigrette.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 4 December 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

chili con queso!
aloo tiki! (indian/pakistani fried potato/onion patty thingy)
chicken fingers! (as american as apple pie)
corn dog! (preferably from a county fair)
spinach dip!

heywood jablomi (heywood), Sunday, 4 December 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Spinach dip from the Knorr's package in a King's Hawaiian bread bowl is so predictable, but so good. Ditto rotel cheese dip.

how do you devil an egg and how come I havent had one in 15 yrs?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Sunday, 4 December 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Pickled onions.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 5 December 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

Cabana + cheese + cocktail onions on toothpicks, all stuck into an orange to make a hedgehog-type presentation.
God love Australia.

Antipasto platter: marinated eggplant, semi-sundried tomatoes, marinated mushrooms, artichoke hearts, and whatever else you can preserve in olive oil.

Spinach dip, bread bowl.

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 December 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

I need to not wait for holidays to make deviled eggs. The Thanksgiving batch I made with lime mayonnaise was really good...I think it's time for a batch with some heat. (Sriracha, possibly also Colman's mustard.)

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 5 December 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

my lo-budget hawaiian punch creation.

i forgot about this! my shining moment as a bartender (aside from the belgian waffle shot): vodka and hawaiian punch with half of a hostess chocolate donut stuck on the rim like a citrus wedge.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 5 December 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

damn.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 December 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

when people bring hawaiian punch and donuts to the bar and the bar owner refuses to restock liquor and mixers regularly, what are you supposed to do?

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

My sometimes-ex makes these amazing apple pie shots.... mmmm

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

the belgian waffle shot was an accident resulting from not having any frangelico when someone wanted a chocolate cake shot.

in a hotel in Greek Town in Chicago right now, but I'm alone tonight so I'm not gonna head over and get baklava; total wasted opportunity imo but oh well.
