how many of you who are seemingly around all the time have a job and if so what kind of a job is it that allows you to waste your life in this manner?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

this will also be helpful when i start really looking for a job in about a month.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been waiting for this thread

kephm, Friday, 12 March 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Chief No 1 Grand Wizard Bikini Inspector. It's a full time job.

andy, Friday, 12 March 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this would be a revive, I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread like this.

I have no job.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Man-whore.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a feeling some people are being less than forthright.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i have no job.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

My job involves taking calls from pissed off customers and so when they're not calling I'm either doing this or filing and fuck filing.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

plz explain this "fuck filing"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

me too. also the person who had this position before me was a fuckup, i am getting paid something like 1/5th of what i should.

of course all the time i am on ILX makes me think i'm in serious need of a career change.

x-post

vahid (vahid), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the salary part is connected because they're not paying dear = they don't expect a whole lot.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

For a moment I thought Spencer was calling me a man-whore and I was very confused. Because, of course, I am not a man.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Working for UCI is bemusing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a terrific multi-tasker!

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

OWN A COMPUTER? MAKE $0/WK AT HOME AS ILX0R POSTER QUICKLY AND EASILY! NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

Paul Eater (eater), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Student.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I work at a library at a new campus of a university, so there really aren't enough students enrolled yet to keep me terribly busy. This will probably change by next fall.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i spend about 3o minutes a work day on ILX. usually i stick to 2-3 threads. if i was unemployed it would be even less. sometimes i will log on from home if i am waiting for the water to boil or killing time before going out.

kephm, Friday, 12 March 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

For a moment I thought Spencer was calling me a man-whore and I was very confused

Sorry about the mixup.

Actually, I'm a designer and the actual time doing the work isn't much, but there's long periods where I'm thinking about what I'm going to be doing and this is ILX-compatible.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

we expect royalties, obv

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not a designer but that about describes my work situation. Essentially I get all the small stuff out of the way as quickly as possible; the more long term stuff I meditate on a bit in terms of how best to handle it. ILX very handily fills the gap.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a huuuge gap!

kephm, Friday, 12 March 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

If I get the full-time position I'm applying for I hope I still get to spend hours dawdling on the web. If not, I'll be making enough to actually have net at my place. Win win!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(I was kidding about the man-whore bit)(xp)

You can think and post on ILX at the same time?

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i mostly post while making phone calls which probably explains my horrible spelling/grammar/alogic.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a schewdent. before that, i had an office job.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that I'm around so much of late (that might change again now that I can see properly!), but I'm a systems analyst, and I don't post from work, except occasionally in a free lunch break.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a designer too and i'm brilliant - so i can get away with more than the average bloke. i work hard when i need to + fuck about when i can.
also, on weekends i am a man-whore.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

um, does research and thinking through shit = "designer"? then i guess i'm a "designer," too.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a long-term temp in an office where I process hard copy orders for medical equipment. I also look at ILX a whole hell of a lot, esp. since many other sites I check are blocked.

If this one gets blocked, I'll probably quit rather than endure the mind-destroying tedium of actually working 100% of the time.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Basically, I don't get paid enough to NOT look at the internet.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You will notice that I am much more prolific (i.e. number 3 on the statscock for both 'sites') out of term-time. University library. God, I was made for ILX.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

you're a "law designer" then, eisbär¿
i'm of the graphic variety.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a job, but I'm the boss so I can do whatever I like. This means that 98% of my time is utter boredom as I get everybody else do all the work, and 2% of my time is sheer terror.

C J (C J), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I've always suspected my bosses' lives are like. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

you're a "law designer" then, eisbär¿

actually, closer to "law stretcher" than "law designer" ... if that makes any sense.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

A designer/editor/writer for a family charity. For the kiddies, y'know?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm here for 12 hrs/day so nobody yells at me for dicking around a bit. I don't know if my days would be that long if I didn't dick around on the internet all day though.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in sales and marketing for a company that I don't own. If my life changes the way I want it to, and I go to work for myself, then you guys are out of my (weekday) life altogether, stakes are too high and temptation is too great.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Beastmaster.
And clerk in the newsroom of the oldest newspaper west of the Mississippi.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Basically, I don't get paid enough to NOT look at the internet.

That was always my philosophy (when I was working obv, which i'm not now)

oops (Oops), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a fake office job typing up notes.

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, that's my bluff ("I got two jobs and a half, me") called then, too?
Or perhaps not. The past eight hours were eaten up by a translation job ...of sorts.
(A rush job it was, more like. And through no falt of mine.)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I gave up freelancing for a lucrative job (7 whole dollars a hour!) developing film for a living. My actual title is "Head Photo Technician." I don't even own a camera.

I'm looking for work, obviously, if anyone hears anything.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I manage a restaurant, hence I'm around late at night when I'm windoing down from work, and also have quite a lot of time off during the day.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 13 March 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm only on ILX from around 5:30 - 8-30 pm weekdays! I know, I know, you all need more of my wit, wisdom and charisma, but that's just life, I guess.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 13 March 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

what dyson said, except the bit about being a man-whore (tho that remains the dream)

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 13 March 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a job in the media. it is to do with music. i justify hanging round here as (hahahahahahha) research.

btw: did you get that 9-5 job jess?

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 13 March 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really know what I am.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 13 March 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot use ILX at work. I waste a lot of time here as my husband works evenings, and I am an insomniac.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 13 March 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

no i didnt gaz. i'll start looking more intently once i'm moved at the end of the month.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 13 March 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Because when I do work, I do incredibly complex and technical work that requires my full attention. I graze on ILX, as a mind-cleansing method. If I've still got the last problem in my head, it distracts me from the next set of balances or code or whatever. Five minutes of reading ILX clears *all* thoughts from my head, and I can get on to the next item without a problem.

The River Kate (kate), Saturday, 13 March 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 13 March 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

freelance pallbearing keeps me in records tho

prima fassy (mwah), Saturday, 13 March 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a part-time badass/dishwasher. Spare time spent on computer and naps.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 13 March 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Work in directory enquiries call centre. It's dead every Saturday, so I can spend more time on here. But nothing ever happens here on Saturdays. Also a part time student.

Rob M (Rob M), Saturday, 13 March 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I work at home as a Dutch-English translator. I don't post much. I made the mistake though of changing my Internet start-up page to ILX, so now when I go on the Internet to find terminology for a translation, I invariably get distracted and waylaid by ILX. I work for myself, so I'm not sticking it to the man when I go on ILX at work, just making my own workday longer.

(What's "Dodenrijk" in English? What's a good pun for "ingewikkeld" when talking about mummies? That's what I logged on to find out and instead here I am on ILX again.)

Maria D., Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Maria, Land of the Dead would be a literal translation. Ingewikkeld -> wrapped up but that doesn't really mean ingewikkeld (complex)/

once i'm moved at the end of the month.
new idea: company that not only moves furniture but people.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to think I'm not around here all the time.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever gets you through the day.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Student for ten hours a week, freelancer-ish for thirty. Each gives me just enough money to make up for the other giving me not quite enough money, but the upshot is that I'm working at home four to five days a week.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, jesus nathalie. I know the meanings but I need the terminology specific to Egyptian mummies. I think Dodenrijk is just called the "underworld" by Egyptologists. "Ingewikkeld?" is the heading - I think I'll translate it as "unwrapping the mystery". This translation need not be too literal.

Maria D., Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Part-time job: killing threads.

Maria D., Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll have you know that I'M the thread-killer in the family, Maria! And while Maria is translating away like a madwoman I watch the baby all day and night and take care of all baby needs. But I leave the computer on all day and ILM/ILE/ILB are now the only places i go to on the internet except for ebay sometimes. And it's been a looooooong winter (which is how i ended up as the 4th most active user on ILM-Yeesh! That's living in rarefied Raggett air!) And when i'm not playing/walking/riding around with baby or cooking or cleaning or reading or napping I'm on here. Once it's spring though I don't know if I'll be around as much. I still have to get a driver's license though. Baby and I have been biking it on nice days.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 13 March 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Think of it as a balance for baby love and bonding and feeding the mind afterwards, if only because the rarified Raggett air is so pure and wonderful (allegedly), and because Rufus, though a fine and accomplished child, cannot yet indulge in acts of HTML tomfoolery and debates on the nature of corny indie fuxxs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, before baby i always worked in corner stores and beer stores and Korean delis and i was surrounded by people all day and i always got my fill of hubbub and gossip and small talk. Plus, I lived in the middle of a city, so their was always interaction and stuff. Now living on a small island in the winter with not a lot of people around, whoooweee, talk about night and day. So that's where ILX came in. It's my virtual corner store. And I'm grateful for it. I like (almost) all the people too! And that's saying something.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 13 March 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

:-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get on ILX at work because my downtime (which is like 1/2 to 2/3 of the day, depending on how fast I can get stuff done) is usually taken up by my doing homework. It works out beautifully because it essentially means they're paying me to do my homework. Just FYI. But once I get home, one of the first things I like to check is ILX, which could be sad or brilliant depending on your POV.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 13 March 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i started a thread like this a while ago when i was looking for a job and wanted to know what kind of job allowed you to dick around on the internet all day
i haven't been on ilx as much recently, probably because the job i got didn't meet the above specifications, but i'm working on being able to sustain myself by playing internet poker, which is going ok so far...
been meaning to spend more time on ilx actually...

robin (robin), Sunday, 14 March 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I am no longer around all the time and it is *precisely because* I no longer have the kind of job which allows me to waste my life in this manner (ps I'm posting from home now, which of course costs me MONEY)

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 14 March 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I really shouldnt use ILX as much as I do at work, as we've recently all had our butts kicked for web surfing a little too much, but our bosses are relatively lenient about it otherwise. I work at an ISP - internet is what we do, so I'm staring at a web browser all the live long day. When not reading ILX and actually working I'm usually applying for domain names or browser SSL certs for clients, or setting up ethernet or DSL connections or somesuch. Its very dull and I REALLY NEED A NEW JOB.

Tra4ce (trayce), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I work for a local branch of a government agency. It's interesting and I like it, but I tend to (like a few people on here it seems), think about things intensely for a while, then think about nothing/ILX, then back to work. This is how I always have worked so I don't feel much guilt.

isadora (isadora), Sunday, 14 March 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I work about twelve hours a week. Even so, I'm only on here about half an hour a day. I enjoy it; it's like reading the paper, except that I can join in.
