why is it that so many assholes end up becoming insurance salesmen?

this is a spinoff of the high-school nemesis thread, wherein i noticed that an awful lot of ILXors' grade school enemies ended up becoming insurance salesmen. i know that no small number of jerks from my high school and college days ended up in the insurance industry in some capacity.

what IS it about the insurance industry that makes it such a powerful asshole magnet?

charismatic people often become salespeople, and sometimes charisma can be polarizing. See: Bill Clinton.

Insurance Agents = Bookies of Catastrophe

this is purely coincidental, and not for you to take personally, but, uh, replace "insurance agent" with "lawyer", and this describes my experience with ex-high school nemeses.

i absolutely do NOT take it personally. the legal profession = the world's most powerful asshole magnet!

mr teeny's family:
grampa: immigrant, built used car dealership which some of his sons still run
dad: life/health/auto insurance
mr teeny: soon to be lawyer

I really wonder what they did in syria, the whole clan is a bunch of charismatic motherfuckers. They're not assholes (totally the stereotypically ebullient immigrant family rather) but boy oh boy do I hate to go to those lawyer gatherings.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

what TYPE of law does mr teeny want to practice, teeny? certain specialities are more full of assholes than others (one of which being INSURANCE DEFENSE -- I REST MY CASE!! but i digress).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

he will be working at BigLaw unfortunately, and he already has a bad attitude about it. He wants to eventually be a state prosecuter and do as much time in the court as possible, so he may be going into something weird like railway law at first just because it's the quickest way of getting into the courtroom.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

prosecutor

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

he sounds like a good l-school friend of mine ... his goal was (presumably still is) to become a federal prosecutor. he did really well 1st year, then compared the salaries he'd get as a prossie as opposed to what he'd pull down at a wall street firm -- you see where this is going, i trust?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

:( yeah we already know about all that, we're going to try to work on the principle where we'd live on my salary alone and his salary goes to student loans/retirement/savings only. Maybe hopelessly idealistic, but it's a start.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 13 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY, my dad's an insurance salesman.

mandee, Saturday, 13 March 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, you're cool, so his sins are forgiven (does he sin?).

Teeny, you are doing your best and you're both good people and all will be well. :-) And when you retire you can use some of the savings to buy all the remaining Cure memorabilia you want!
