Wonderfalls

Did anyone see it tonight? I was very disappointed. Had high hopes after the critical endorsements. I think the girl is not as cute and soulful as the Joan of Arc girl, who she is inevitably compared to. She reminds me more of Daria--very sly. The show most reminded me of a Disney or a Nick show--strange quick veering camera movements, weird close-ups. It's probably not fair to judge this show on the first episode, but let's do it anyway.

It seemed to try a bit too hard, but it had some potential. Didn't like the broadly painted caricatures that some people seemed to be, and at times the editing and weird close-ups were incredibly obnoxious (but what was worse was the music, which was far too cute). Definitely a Daria vibe coming from Caroline Dhavernas. But, often pilots try too hard.

Interested enough to keep watching, but I'm disappointed too.

No one else watched?

uh not that i care or anything.

Oooh, I hate Joan of Arcadia. So smarmy.

This was okay, though I was perturbed to hear that the lead actress apparently was just like me. I must give off more of a Daria vibe than I thought.

I wanted to watch, but my kids INSISTED that we buy the "School of Rock" DVD, so we watched that instead.

I had a basketball game and had to sit through an agrument between my mom and uncle, so I missed it.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 13 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

did your team win Aja?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 13 March 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

NO!

God! We've got like three good players on the team. I'm one of them, thank God. I scored twice though. I scored because I got fouled and, because I can run so fast, I rebounded the ball and scored again.

I have to say the show description on Fox probably should be taken out and shot (or at least the PR writer of same):

Set against the backdrop of Niagara Falls, WONDERFALLS is a funny, provocative and magical one-hour dramedy about JAYE TYLER (CAROLINE DHAVERNAS), an underachieving twenty-something souvenir shop worker whose life is forever changed after she has what her family calls “an episode.” That’s when inanimate animal figures – toys, cartoon images, anything in the form of an animal – begin talking to her, and their cryptic messages set into motion a chain of events that invariably lead her into the lives of others in need. Described by its creators BRYAN FULLER (“Star Trek: Voyager”) and TODD HOLLAND (“Malcolm in the Middle”), with tongues firmly in cheek, as “Touched by a Crazy Person,” the series focuses on Jaye as she meddles in, muddles up, and ultimately betters the lives of herself, her eccentric family of overachievers, and the eclectic variety of strangers that cross her path. Over the course of this series Jaye will discover that the world around her really is a magical place, and that the seemingly random events in her life are actually all part of something much greater.

This sounds like "Amelie".

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 14 March 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved it. At heart it's a feel-good show, but it's sharp, the writing's hilarious and the star is great. It's far more cynical than Amelie, but they still pull off stuff like the talking novelty toys - there's schmaltz, but they keep it in check. Some terrific people are behind it, including Angel's Tim Minear.
You could compare it to stuff like Northern Exposure or Ed or whatever, or some of Fox's other "edgy schmaltz" shows (Malcolm in the Middle has had some great episodes), but it has a very original pace and sense of humor.

It's also weird enough that I have no idea what audience they thought they would get - they would have to soften it and slow it down to get a bigger or more family-based, Gilmore Girls-type audience, and they throw around sexual situations and words like "bitch" and "ass" enough that they're not trying to make a kid's show.

But it's such a sweet, weird show - I doubt it'll survive the rest of the year but I really hope it does.

Wonderfalls girl > Joan Girardi

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting, Executive Producer Tim Minear actually posted an open letter to the kind of grassroots Internet fans who go for shows like this. It's a pretty bold plea for help. (The letter)

It debuted to about the same half-assed ratings that Boston Public was getting. I'm also noticing that some of the people I'd expect to love it sound lukewarm. But I dunno, I dug the shit out of it.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Minear directed two or three Firefly episodes, he's used to begging for cult viewers.

six years pass...

just finished rewatching all of this show for the first time since 2005. it really was a marvelously funny, engaging, weird show, and took some interesting turns toward the end. the chemistry between the cast was amazing, too. really wish we'd gotten to see what happened next.

any suggestions for other shows kinda similar in tone to this one?

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Sunday, 26 June 2011 07:42 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, love this show

Bryan Fuller's other two shows, Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me, are definitely worth watching, although Wonderfalls is my favorite of the 3.
