I R wondering, what is the point of this miserable excuse for band! They R duller than smelly friend Brooker's Megadeth collection!

I R Fatnick, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I R now expecting lots of hatemail. But it true Pulp R most Boring band on planet!

I R hatemail, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't diss Megadeth, they are one of the finest thrash metal bands ever.

I've never bought anything by Pulp.

james, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pulp fits nicely in that English tradition of Smart Pop. Hence why I don't like it much. I like the dumb dumb boys.

helen fordsdale, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I never bothered much with Pulp. So I agree.

Ronan, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i love pulp , they are clever .

anthonyeaston, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Were thought to be 'thinking man's' Britpop though never asked for nor relished the tag. Don't know of them during their 2 decades in the wilderness pre-His 'n Hers but surely any comedown ie: 'Hardcore' was sought, albeit subconciously, whilst pricking Michael Jackson's pomposity at the Brits has to be lauded.

hobart, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the point of pulp is for jarvis cocker to stand around and look pretty.

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kim, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyway -- having just bent an ear again to their wonderful selves via the new album, the point is that they are good and not stinky and mean like yourself, Fatnick. Bleah! :-P

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if he does such a good job of standing around looking pretty, then why is he uglier than a bulldog's asshole?

shinysteve, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah so there are others? :) Pulp do nothing for me. Typical Limey band that is made more important then they really are. Jarvis we used to make fun of, with his crap clothes and ironic sunglasses. I like 'Babies' though and that other song. ;) 'Sorted for E & Wizz' = smug joke by someone who probably hasn't been within a mile of an E.

Omar, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fatnick has fucked taste...pulp and scott walker = classic

Geoff, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pulp and Scott Walker = quite a dull gig.

Ally C, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I is having impeccable taste. That is why I R not liking Pulp!

Disagreeable Fatnick, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's hard for me to understand why bands like Pulp are still getting talked about when there are so many talented bands making music that most people haven't heard of.

Samantha, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's the molester eyes, as stated elsewhere. Also Pulp being really great helps, and they're the last of the Great English Lyric Bands - every rock critic in the UK feels comfy with a G.E.L.B. even the ones that normally make their money from writing about outrageous space noise.

Amazing unsigned bands tend to = shoddy bar-room punk, or drizzly Boards-Of-Canada rip-off, anyway (delete according to genre).

It's hard for me to understand why bands like Pulp are still getting talked about when there are so many talented bands making music that most people haven't heard of.

Er, could it be because people haven't heard of them? I always like to hear about new bands...

Nicole, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There are always ways to find new music rather than buying the latest album from a band that you know every reviewer in the country is talking about this month. Sorry, I know I'm being short and snotty. i don't feel well this morning and am not illustrating my point very well. Read my answer on the october listening post. The Deadly Snakes have released stuff on Sympathy and In The Red. They R great. How many people have listened to them?

Samantha, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But it's a virtuous circle in some cases.

Pulp release Diff Class -> tons of ppl buy it in part because it seems to say some really interesting things -> every reviewer in country also interested -> follow-ups also create interest. I do not want to read about Pulp because they are the easy option. I want to read about them because they are one of the UK's most intriguing bands, which is also why the reviewers want to write about them. Everyone's a winnah!

Tom, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This Is Hardcore was shite though.

DG, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"This is Hardcore" the eponymous track is their best song to date. (Actually, I haven't heard the new album)

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i meant title track didn't I. what a ponce.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There are always ways to find new music rather than buying the latest album from a band that you know every reviewer in the country is talking about this month.

Of course there are. But your original comment was that you couldn't understand why Pulp was getting talked about when there are so many great unknown/new bands out there. It just stands to reason that bands that are better known are more likely to get talked about, especially if they make albums as great as Pulp does.

Nicole, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alan is right about "This Is Hardcore". DG is uncharacteristically wrong.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I R thinking this is harcore isnt very good from the songs i've heard, and the new song is very rubish indeedy.

I R returning Fatnick, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry Robin, but I just can't stand that album, it bored me to tears and for me was a big disappointment.

DG, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A lot of fans of the previous album were disappointed by hardcore, but I think it stands a re-listen with some distance. IIRC Anne Dudley arranged some of the orchestral stuff on it giving it something extra not on the other pulp albums. possibly that put some people off. it is a slower album too.
