I'm stunned. West Indies bowled out for 47!!!!
England win by 10 wickets.

Rock Bastard, Sunday, 14 March 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Excellent news!

And haha to the poxy BBC with there "England have a lead of just 28".

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 14 March 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus, I hope Harmison proves me wrong about him and manages to stay fit for the whole series.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 14 March 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

One of those stunning sessions that England cricket fans dream of. I'm still in a state of shock. Astonishing.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 14 March 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

astonishment:- :-0

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Happiness is clearly a big burly guy called Steve at this point.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently the PA played Three Little Birds after the game today. I'm thrilled and all that and I want to see England do well, but part of me would like the Windies to put up something of a fight.

Daniel (dancity), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I want us to win a series in the Caribbean - we've come tantalisingly close on so many occasions since the end of the Windies dominance of the 80s, and I think now could be time.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hoggie's on fire!!!!

West Indies Vs England

Oh, dearie me, this is a good one...

Let's see, The west indies have beautiful beaches and nice weather, but England has nice old towns and churches, many over 150 years old.

The west indies is full of west indians, and england is full of west indi... hmmmm, okay, that one doesn't work...

West Indies has rum and england has gin and both contribute mightily to the admirable productivity of both lands

The west indies have hurricanes and england has Sainsburys. Yes, that's a good comparison.

England is next to france and holland and the west indies include islands subjugated by france and holland...oh...dear...

I guess when you really look at it closely, the west indies and england are pretty much the same!

Skottie, Saturday, 3 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the west indies should buck up and play this games with atitude there must be determine to win this games and come of the losing streik. There fellow guyaneses are counting on to win the games so make us prode west indies

sean s s, Saturday, 3 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Prode?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You dont want to know.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Saturday, 3 April 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah!! A long time coming. Did anyone see the pictures on Sky Sports? Amazing scenes. Amongst the union jacks and St Georges crosses were welsh & irish flags. I wonder how many fans will go out to Antigua.
Can it be the unthinkable 4-0 whitewash? I can remember several 5-0 defeats in the 80s.

Cricket Bastard, Saturday, 3 April 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Not having Sky, I can't tell, so to what extent is this due to our brilliance and to what extent to the the opposition's weaknesses? Will there be a knock on effect onto our chances at home this summer or are we likely to revert to the same old Henmanesque stuttering?

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Sunday, 4 April 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Bit of both really Baravelli. England's batting has actually been rather variable, with the openers struggling for runs, and Hussain even more dour than usual. Thorpe and Butcher - both players over 30 - have been the ones who've consistently played well. They need to bring the likes of Strauss through soon I'd hope...

The bowling has been excellent though; much more consistent and threatening than I'd expected pre-series. Giles has been a waste of a place, though...

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 4 April 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

but surely Giles is there for his dependable late order batting?

West Indies are quite a young team, but I'm baffled by their batting performance. Their bowling has potential.

Anyway, I can't remember the last time England won 3 tests in a row. It's even a little disconcerting! But GREAT!!!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 4 April 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Hussain got a couple of fifties (i think butcher got a couple of fifties too) and has fought really hard.

So you have those 3 in the middle order plus harminson, jones, hoggard and then flintoff as the all rounder, but the other five players haven't contributed much (though vaughan has been a really good captain, and I think his batting is bound to come together at some stage).

I don't like giles, but there's no alternative.

Read is a good keeper but can't bat so we need to give other people a go, and then Trescothick is someone that is worth persuading with but for how much longer? shouldn't we try someone else?

Hopefully we can solve some of these problems before the next ashes series.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 4 April 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Hat-tricks are amazing, aren't they? Few sporting achievements match them for sheer bedlam.

I'm chuffed about the series win, and even Tres Gothique was in the runs this time round.

What about the Windies now? Sobers was on the radio this morning, refusing to say that this is the end for them. He said it's just a fact of life that you just can't find world beaters in every generation.

Daniel (dancity), Sunday, 4 April 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've read references to the growing popularity of baseball and football vis-a-vis cricket; there's doubtless some stuff in there about the declining pull of a colonial game vs US sport / the game played by the entire world. How much of that is OTM and how much apocalytic doommongery?

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 4 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Julio is a cricket fan! Wow, this makes me unaccountably happy. Windies' batting has been abysmal but their bowling has shown a lot of promise. Unfortunately the creeping Americanization of the Caribbean has led to the demise of cricket and the growth of shit sports like Basketball (what a dreadful game), while football supercedes virtually every sport on the planet these days.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

About half the West Indies team are in their early twenties, so I guess they'll get better in a few years. It's a shame about the creeping football monoculture.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 5 April 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
freddy was so good today, so so good.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

he was dropped on 80-odd wasn't he?

lara was really great too, apparently.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

He was, it was lovely to see. Good to see Sarwan in form again also.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

dropped on 80-odd? he got 167!

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 30 July 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I read that he gave a chance when he was 80 but he was dropped.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 31 July 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what that means.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 31 July 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

BUTTER FINGERS!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 31 July 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

oh I see.

everyone needs a bit of luck.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 31 July 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'know, I've no idea why I continue to be surprised by Windies collapses. Chalk 'em up.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 31 July 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Did I hear correctly that the highest ever successful fourth innings run chase at OT was 156? If so, 231 looks colossal!

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Something like 145 -- the only thing is that their bowling attack is fairly inexperienced but I wouldn't be surprised if we lost the game.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

They have got the runs to bowl at, if it were situations reversed England would be massive favorites to bowl the Windies out.

Strauss is our man I reckon.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Strauss gone.

Big dangly balls.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Vaughan is due an innings

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks very hard to bat on that track.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

We'll win.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr.Punch and Flints looking good. 108 needed.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

92 needed. Fidel is getting a bit of long-handle.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

GOD ITS TENSE

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm unable to watch the telly or listen to the radio - when is play scheduled to end?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

180-3 - 51 required.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

190-3. It looks like the Doctor's confidence was well justified.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

194-3, well, at this rate my query becomes a bit academic really.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope the clouds are lighter in Manchester than they are in the south.

From the BBC:
1628: Collins replaces Edwards at the Brian Statham End and Flintoff smashes a no-ball for four, just missing Key's head.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

6 From Flintoff 50 for him

16 to win.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

10 to win, Keys innings has been almost perfect, no 100 for him though.

Lovely 4 from him there.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Crowd are cheering Flintoffs blocks.

Another HUGE 6.

4 to go.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

YEEESSSS!!

I hope Mr. Punch gets MOTM - his 90-odd is a great innings in the citcumstances. Better than his 200, I reckon.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Flintoff hits the winning runs

Awesome victory.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Cracking batting for the last day of a test match, but Windies bowling is so poor.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked Boycott's commonsense when the others were going about how fast Edwards was bowling, it was like "yes, but he's only got one wicket"...I was hoping he'd add "Rubbish" but he's mellowed out these days.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

who won man of the match?

flintoff was my man of the series, outstanding throughout.

I got a bout of the shivers when key chopped a ball away for four, near to the win, when boycott just exclaimed, "shot, lad! shot!"

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, there's another test to go yet!

Thorpe was man of the match, but he's injured so won't play on Thursday. Been replaced by Ian Bell, don't know anything about him, only that Warwickshire are top of the league.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

wow another test?! I thought that ws it over.

I also almost got the shivers when key was walking in and boycott said 'well played, lad.' I think it's the calling a big hairy-ass biffer like key a coy name like 'lad' gets me.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVE THE CRICKET!

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, good old Key! Me and my uncle were slagging him off on Saturday, haha oh well!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

** think it's the calling a big hairy-ass biffer like key**

He's not a biffer though. He's a pretty conventional player with all the shots, but a couple of technical flaws that he needs to get rid of.

Ian Bell - LOTS of runs this year for Warks, just like the season before last. Had a bad season last year or he would have got in ahead of Ed Smith vs Sith Ifrica. I definitely expect him to score a century on his debut.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw the highlights. After seeing Bravo in the first innings I did think a quick 3 wkt spell from him or one of the others would have gotten them the victory on a 5th day pitch but I'm really happy to be totally wrong.

I get the impression that key also is far too nervous at the start of an innings but maybe with more experience...I still think that if butcher doesn't er, harm himself anymore he should be there at no3 for the ashes.

How is Ian bell's technique, guess its hard to judge what with county cricket not exactly able to expose too many flaws.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

does Key's obvious batting ability (yes, with less nerves please) make up for his fielding, which really is not all that?

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

'biffer' (fr me, non-educated cricket fan) = a big boy NOT a hoofer, dr. c.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh sorry Coz - I misunderstood.

I think Key's fielding has improved since 2002, he seems a decent enough short-leg or silly point. I guess they've learned not to put him in the deep after he dropped those catches v India.

Bell is supposed to have a v. solid technique, although you can't tell until you get to test level. I suspect that W. Indies bowlers aren't much of a test anyway, so we will only find out if he plays against SA or Aus.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I wd marry shivnarine chanderpaul.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

fr name alone.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

what a batsman.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Test about to start. England won the toss and are batting.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Game over then

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

indeed.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

51-1. Tres is going well. Strauss out.

Interesting selection by the Windies - Jermaine is back instead of Pedro and they're padding the batting with Dwayne Smith at 6 or 7. I rate Lawson and thought he was unlucky to get dropped last time. His action is mighty suspect though.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 19 August 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

pretty poor shot by strauss.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 August 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

152/3 Great recovery by Vaughan (44) and Bell (36). Remember what I said about Bell upthread.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

210/3 : Bell 70 Vaughan 60. Good stuff.

I reckon Windies will wish they'd played Mohammed as I think it will turn later. On the other hand they're batting last, not us, so maybe it won't matter.

oh F@CK Bell's gone! 210/4

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

And Vaughan. 244/5.

Flints is giving Lawson some clobber. 3 fours in the over just then. He's on 30 already with 6 fours.

Anyone else following this?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I am watching now! Second new ball soon...I think England will be all out for 340.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't see much of bell's innings (the twats at C4 switched to racing) but it was encouraging how he came in at 63-3 - tricky situation - and made the partnership.

313-5 (what was lara thinking abt - why not get the new ball in?).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 August 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

one over, six fours.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

in vain.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Great day though! I watched Giles and Hoggie for a few minutes on the telly in Rough Trade.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I came home just in time for the second innings and that wz something - first time that's every been done in test cricket. I wondered if Vaughan got his, not so much tactics, but his psychology, right on that one: why not persist with Hoggard - bowler who has been doing really well and seems to have improved by abt 10% over the last year or so - against gayle? There was no harm, we still had a 270 odd run lead.

That came off gd tho': giles put the breaks on and we got a couple of late ones.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

7 out of 7 for the summer!!! :-)

For the ashes: we have 7 tests (5 in south africa, two against bangladesh) to work on our fielding - it was gd here but i think its been too incosistent - I also think Anderson and simon jones will have to improve by abt 10-15% as bowlers/cricketers (and in jones' case, his fitness will have to improve too) and that's about as much as we can do before the aussies come here.

Should be competitive.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 21 August 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Bring on the aussies!!!!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 21 August 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)
