I went to a 90s theme party the other day. Lots of people were wearing plaid and NIN t-shirts and torn-up jeans.

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

last i wore a nkotb jacket and dollar sign earrings, but it ws a specifically early 90s party

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

flares

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

cross colors jeans, a "bugs-bunny-in-rap-wear" oversized t-shirt, and a matching jean jacket.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

no wait, a hypercolor t-shirt

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

top hat

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

cross colors are hot

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo's outfit ws worn by my friend julian, plus he had stussy shaved into his hair

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone takes 90s to mean 90-93. What if it was a late 90s party?

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

people do the same with the 80s Sym

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No they don't!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I think of 1987 Jason & Kylie look as typifying 80s pop style as much as I think of new romanticism.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i'm totally lying but his hair ws perfect because he always looks like that kind of puffy haired guy from color me badd anyway

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i would have "strongo" shaved into mine of course

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean my pubic hair

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

and i mean do have

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

you must have a lot of room down there

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

broader than broadway

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Long black wool skirt, mohair vest, crisp white shirt, bunches, glitter makeup, little nylon knapsack.

Gucci hipsters from first Tom Ford collection, Adidas old skool or Patrick Cox loafers (no socks), tight teeshirt, hairslides, Rouge Noir nail polish/lipstick, long black leather coat from Camden, Issey Miyake perfume and little nylon knapsack, possibly Prada.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah if i went to a 90s party now no way would i go early 90s! i wd maybe do mid 90s slick minimalistic aaliyah with wraparound sunglasses and silver jewellery or spice girl giant shoes or late 90s britney sportswear

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Aphex twin mask.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I know anyone who wore NIN t-shirts, Spice Girl giant shoes or late 90s Britney sportswear. WHERE WERE MY 90s?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

you were too old n.

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

If you remember the 90s you weren't there

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

not in america?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

in an INDIE GHETTO, you antimainstreamist you

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yes clearly my 90s fashion choices would actually be not particularly different from their 80s/70s/60s(?) counterparts

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My perception, on watching things like Oprah in the mid-90s, was that large sections of America seemed to hang onto 80s looks for a very long time.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i would probably go in dreadlocks, neon glow-in-the-dark facepaint, and a zoot suit, but only if there was some way to achieve a fisheye effect as i walked around.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a fabulous ghetto, Ricardo.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Spice Girl giant shoes began the '90s as either raver platforms or klunky riot grrrl shoes.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe a pair of black dickies, doc martins, funkadelic t-shirt, and compton hat

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

N you may think of '87 but the general consensus with 80s revivals focusses on the first half of that decade (new wave haircuts, compilation adverts, and the hits from '80-'84 sold more than the hits from the later half and tend to be remembered more)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

white gloves, vicks smeared face mask and glowsticks ahoy for that authentic early 90s voibe

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

for that one we shd set you up with lens flare strongo!

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I take it back - some people I know did have trainers with big platforms. Including me, actually.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

stuff i actually wore in the 90s

fluoro jogging bottoms
paisley shirt
lumberjack shirt
shellsuit jogging bottoms
black denim
adidas sweatshirts
thick fleece jumpers
brown cords
white Sonetti jacket
MA1 flight jacket (bog-standard junglist attire)

i should really be killed

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The thought of you wearing shellsuit bottoms and paisley shirt combination DOES make me think that you might be a terrorist

Sarah (starry), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It all seems OK bar the jogging bottoms (and probably the paisley shirt), steve.

x-post

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hawaiian shirt, converse one stars, bindi, eyebrow ring, pink hair

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

leather pants, "zero" t-shirt, shaved head

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

All blerks should have dressed like Boyzone in the Love Me For A Reason video (1994, fact fans). Did anyone have an East 17 baseball cap?

Sarah (starry), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend had a Take That scarf but I didn't want one, I thought it was rubbish.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ringer tshirt w american youth camp logo, a-line mini skirt, knee high socks, mary janes

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the paisley shirt was 1990 only - AND I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE (except to combine it with the sports casual perhaps...christ on a Marin)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

stussy jeans, ben sherman shirt, adidas tracksuit top, fat laces

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

what's terrifying is how much of this is still the identikit uniform for their particular subculture

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

particularly the last one which cuts a little close to the bone haha

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Bjork buns, A-line mini skirt, angora crop top, mini-backpack, glitter, Adidas shelltoes.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe no-one has yet bought up bodysuits, the most useless things in the world ever ever. Were they actually called bodysuits? Yes they were, weren't they.

Surely a white shirt with cropped jumper over the top, and floppy hat with flower on it, yesno?

Sarah (starry), Monday, 15 March 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

jeremy jordan: i think the whole oceany citrus scents are a hallmark of the 90's.

esoj: No, I don't think anyone has yet. We can blame sonic youth for that particular 'look' i think.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

haha sorry to harp on abt it so much but i find it really interesting! i think mainly cos i have a pretty bad sense of smell and i often find perfumes kind of confusing

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I wear men's scents. I don't like many women's one. They're all too flowery for me.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

what are the defining notes of 00's perfumes?

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

spicy: cardamom, cinnamon, wood tones.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Oceany citrus scents' is a good way to describe the '90s in perfume terms; so is 'green' scents. When I think '80s, I think of Giorgio and Coco and Dior Poison (none of which I wore), all really heavy and clingy and there to be noticed: 'hey, she's wearing EXPENSIVE perfume there'. '70s were spicy, hence Opium and Charlie. Preppies and my aunt wore White Linen by Estee Lauder.

Right now I've got a bunch of Comme fragrances that are experimental: one of them has essence of burnt rubber, another has gin, another has frankincense.

Also yes of COURSE there are fragrance trends. Do you have any idea how the fragrance wing of various ateliers actually pays for the whole operation? Almost the second that those efficient, light fragrances coalesced as a mainstream trend, people wanted to be different and sought out things like Chaumade and Opium, or educated themselves about vintage scent like they did with the corresponding clothes. People also buy themselves fragrance if they're looking for an affordable way to have Gucci or Fendi or whatever.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it odd that no one has mentioned combat trousers yet.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I am listening to Utah Saints' 'What Can You Do For Me', The Prodigy's 'Charlie', Ned's Atomic Dustbin's 'Happy' and Lush's 'Single Girl' with deference to this thread.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and early nineties pop-dance is

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i refused to wear combat trousers

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But you had a shell suit Steve. I feel much better about not having worn a shell suit, but having owned combat trousers.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i refused to wear combat trousers

i was already wearing them, and was confused to find myself in fashion for about six months. this is what comes of hanging around with crusties. i still have a pair. is that VERY bad??

has anyone mentioned nose-piercings yet?

also - we're missing the mid-90s period. 70s print shirt, obtained from a charity shop before the charity shops caught on and hiked up the prices. flares. platforms. afghan coat.
i still have most of these things, too.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I wore combat trousers, but never a shell suit, stevem, i'm shocked!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I refused to buy them too, until about 1999, when for some reason I caved to a dying fashion and bought some summery white ones. The first day I wore them, I sat on a cheap rug that got wet and bled colour into my new trousers. My combat experiment was thus brief and unhappy.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

B&W camo combats are across the line, though.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God, with a cord mini-skirt sometimes instead of flares. This was the uniform of my sixth form common room.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

AF OTM

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

although, I don't approve of any kind of combat trousers/camouflage gear, maybe.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I vaguely remember wearing tartan hotpants. I had forgotten all about them until I saw some similar ones in Urban Outfitters recently!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

then there was that horrible waistcoat thing that happened in the 90s. for a while, even fluffy furry ones were acceptable. or perhaps that was just in gay clubs..

i would not wear one of these. even to a 90s party. even to a very bad 90s party that i didn't want to go to.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't have the shell suit TOP i should add. also, this was 1990 and i was 12 - half the stuff i mentioned in my original list was stuff i wore just when i was 12 in fact. they were crazy times, anything felt possible.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

1997 was all about the mustardy/beige jeans tho

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

when i was 12, i wore a parka. it was deeply unfashionable. i hated having to wear it.

now i'm ahem... a little older. i have a parka again. it has become unfashionable again, now. i like wearing it.

i'm sure there's a statement about something there. if i was clever i'd say it was an indictment of the emptiness of post-modern cultural recycling.
but it isn't. its just kind of...sad, really.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Combat trousers should never be worn in novelty colours, patterns or fabrics, otherwise they are just Zubaz with more pockets.

Also combats are the trousers of any and all clubbing. Dance to jungle, shop at Jungle. In the mid-'90s Levis were shitting themselves because of the fall in their sales/rise in combat sales.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

1997 was all about the mustardy/beige jeans tho

My mustardy/beige jeans phase started in 1993 after a trip to Glasgow.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Combat trousers are the one example I can think of of indie fashion anticipating high street by about 5 or 6 years.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What about crap t-shirts?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Aargh if we're talking personal fashion disaster back-catalogue, I'd be wearing a lot of tie-dye. *brrreurgh*

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Liz.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, the shame etc. I was living in full-on chav horror Medway Towns oblivion, and felt the need to express myself against the Kappa tracksuits and teenage pregnancy. I wore DMs with long flowery skirts.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I wore paisley shirts in 1987 'cause I was into the Hoodoo Gurus and Three O'Clock, etc. It was SO OVER by the 90s that only Miles Hunt wore them. Speaking of which, Mr. Rhyming Slang to thread!
lotsa Mary Janes
Sebadoh lyrics felt-tipped on my stomach by my boyfriend
shorts/tights combo
the flowery dresses that you could still get at the thrift store before Natalie Merchant killed them and they became 90210 material
I am SO depressed right now

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, it was bad. But I was a horrible teenager, so it kind of fitted.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

A shorts and tights combo?!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Aha surely you jest.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

'fraid not :(

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is illuminating as i understand better why i didn't have a girlfriend for the entire duration of the 90s. worst decade ever.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold on... shorts and tights WITH BRACES is ringing a hideous "Blossom" bell.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

no braces, as that would be reserved for a VERY SPECIAL "Blossom"

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The one where they went to go to see C&C Music Factory and ended up dancing with them in the queue, perhaps?

GRATE NEWS FOR ALL OUR VIEWERS!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The floppy flowery hat thing mentioned upthread is also applicable to the Bialik-monster.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

she is in fact responsible for the sartorial shame inflicted upon women in that era. Her and Jennie "Rabbit-Face" Garth

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's hunt them down and BURN THEM! Although they are unfortunately not responsible for my own nasty past: that is entirely down to my misguided youth.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

At my primary school the big thing was to wear sheer black nylons with your skirt. Also:
Guess? jeans
These shirts you would blow on and they changed colour
A floral slip-dress worn over a tiny tshirt
cK One

Genevieve, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, the shame etc.... I wore DMs with long flowery skirts.
-- Liz :x (lizd4ply...), March 16th, 2004.

liz, you say this like its a BAD thing?!?

i would like to see the print-dress and docs look come back. for men.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

No-one's mentionned chokers? Ubiquitous in '93

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Chokers, yeah, though I have them down from 92-99 (started with ribbon chokers and was CHAINS by the end).

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God, slip dresses. I wore them with everything. Trainers and a feather boa were popular for that Sarah Cracknell look. Now I wear my nineties slip dresses as nighties.
