I say dud. Although I like Picasso Café.

i've never understood why it was as popular and trendy as it was, tho i guess people will/are/have been saying that about Hoxditch

Classic for some shopping if you can't take Oxford Street e.g. Peter Jones

Classic - exploring some of the roads off the King's Road, including such landmarks as the Flood Street studios where the Sgt. Pepper album was photographed.

Dud - if you're expecting any remnants of excitement around the old McLaren/Westwood shop.

What strikes me when I'm in London is how samey all the high streets have become - and I think it's a fairly recent phenomenon. King's Road has a Prêt-à-Manger, a Coffee Republic, WH Smith, a McDonald's, a Next etc., etc., just like every other high street. There was always an element of this but I think it's got significantly worse over the past ten years.

Went the first time in 1983, and enjoyed it. went a few times around then (that really hot summer),

Went again after a long gap around 1991, and couldn't even find the good bits I remembered, or where they used to be...

Classic because I grew up in the area and had some fun times there up until age 16 (not counting my recent numerous drunken nights at 151). Also classic because two of my closest friends live right off it, plus a few other mates. And it's actually a very nice street to walk down, especially in summer. Still has a few worthy places to visit (West Cornwall Pasty Company, I kiss you).

Dud because Fly Clothing had to give up its lease in January. Also dud because of the high level of buttheads I went to school with living off it and always hanging out there, leading to a brief period of public school guilt (not to mention the lure of the rest of Central London being incredibly attractive). Also, I miss the Pizza Hut (scene of my 14th birthday).

I remember some 'mates' who lived there, they always had two mannequin legs shoved out of their third storey window, because they were wacky and crazy guys...(sigh) (1990 or thereabouts)

I remember the first time I walked on it in 1987, and being rather dispointed, tho' I don't really know what I was expecting. I'm sure Lydon, Sioux, Severin, Simonon etc. wouldn't be caught anywhere near that strip today.

The Chelsea Kitchen's a decent place to eat, as I remember.

In terms of silly pilgramages, these days I'd be more inclined to find Marion Park where the crucial bits of "Blow-Up" were filmed.

I have never been. Should I go out of my way to visit?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 15 March 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah - just get the 19 instead and see it by bus. Nowt speshul, just inhabited by those who think it is.

You'd walk right on by the locale of McLaren's old shop and never know it.

I quite like it, but I'm an unreconstructed posho.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 15 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic for Dan Treacy and no other reason.

The King's Road is alright. The downstairs bar at The Royal Court is nice (although I suppose that's technically on Sloane Sq.) But as someone said upstream, it's no greatly different from any other London high street.
