Do I need to buy a new mouse?

cos the cursor only move UP very reluctantly, but it has no problem at all going from side to side. This doesn't happen all the time, mind. I don't wanna waste 20 euros, so can anyone diagnose if this is the problem?

nice to see you around more gatinha! have you tried eviscerating it and cleaning it out?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 15 March 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Teeny. Yup I have.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 15 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That's happened to mice of mine before. I replaced them (though if your mouse pad is dirty, switching that might help too).

My mouse pad has got a picture of Firenze on it, and I'm using Windows ME.

Are you using an optical mouse, or one of the old school ones with the ball and the rollers? If it's optical, make sure the sensor is cleaned out...usually you can do that just by blowing hard on the little slot the light comes out of. If it's the old school with rollers, remove the ball and take a look at the rollers to make sure there aren't little dust rolls around the outside of the rollers (the one you'd be looking for would be the one at the top or the bottom of the mouse. If you use a careful touch you can often get that gunk off with just a fingernail.

If it's all clean and changing the mousepad doesn't work, time to replace 'er. If you're currently using the old-school, the extra investment in the a new optical mouse is definitely worthwhile.

Are the batteries running out?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 15 March 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a traditional one that came with the pc a couple of years ago, so I guess I need to replace it with sthg moderner.I'm not totally bothered about spending the cash, I was just worried in case it was a software thing which would obviously entail a lot of hard work and grief.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 15 March 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Get an optical one - they are totally worth it.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a virus that causes the cursor to skip around your screen in an erratic fashion, but if it's just simply a problem of it not working very well in one direction, it's probably just a mechanical thing and nothing much to worry about.

Having now gone optical, I feel as if I'm floating in space...

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

They're not that expensive, just go to your local pet store.

*blinks* The exact same thing happened to me last night. But I went ahead and spent the $9.99 on a new mouse.

Did you get an optical one? I did, and nearly went blind.

My mate Andy's got one of them, it's immense! Using his computer's like flying the space shuttle, only more exciting. Those little buttons by the wheel are excellent for scrolling if, like me, you're too lazy to repeatedly spin the wheel to get down a page.

Once you've had an optical mouse you can't go back.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

ooh we've got one of those at work except it's also WIRELESS and docks in a little charger.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

five years pass...

I'm looking to get a vertical mouse for persistent tendinitis in my wrist, and the Evoluent-brand mouses seem to be the best overall. However, ;this cheapo seems to be getting decent reviews. Should I just go with the more expensive one, esp. when it comes to alleviating an RSI?

RIP Logitech G602. Wheel button was broken for a while, and today the laser stopped working. You will be remembered for having a fuckton of buttons.
