...is having a special offer today in honor of their 50th anniversary: 1954 prices! that means a 50 cent corned beef sandwich, as opposed to the current $11 price. i'm assuming it's going to be a total mob scene, since it's usually packed anyway, but what a value (corner 2nd avenue & 10th street, nyc).

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! their normal prices are ridiculously expensive.

hstencil, Monday, 15 March 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i know! it's almost too good to be true. part of me suspects some sort of scam.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

most people I know think it's a bit over-rated, anyways. I don't eat most of their entrees anyway so I dunno, but the last time I was there it was like $16 for a bagel with salmon and all the fixins, which is way way way too much.

hstencil, Monday, 15 March 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Why would you order a bagel with salmon at the 2nd Ave. deli?!? That's like getting chicken at Peter Luger's.

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Their pastrami is pretty good, but I think Katz's is better - for about the same price. But the tables at 2nd Ave Deli are a lot cleaner.

I was taken there to eat, but that was the only seafood item they had. I don't eat any other type of animal.

hstencil, Monday, 15 March 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough. You are forgiven. The people who took you there are dopey, though. I hope they paid for your bagel.

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway my girlfriend says Barney Greengrass is better.

hstencil, Monday, 15 March 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

For fish, it sure is.

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

well there you go.

hstencil, Monday, 15 March 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

In any case, if the line's not too long, looks like I'll be having some of that 2nd Ave Deli pastrami for supper.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 15 March 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i love you lauren for keeping us posted on these wonderful events. matzoh ball soup & corned beef 4 life.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 15 March 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

part of me is all "oh those new york delis it hurts my soul to think of their beauty" and the other part is all "$16 for a bagel & lox wtf"

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(we have ben's, anyway, the most beautiful deli in the world)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i eat at exxxpensive NY delis with my dad sometimes. it's ideal because he pays for it and i get to keep all of the leftovers, which are inevitable. ahh, paternal guilt.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha ooooh this is evil. It's threads like these that make me wish I lived in Manhattan (where I would have a heart attack eating 50 cent corn beef sandwiches.) Second Ave is no more expensive than Katz or *GASP* Carnegie, really. The BIG three are all pretty pricey.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Eisenberg's has 1986 prices every day!! I think the napkins are from 1954, though.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yay eisenberg's! i love that place.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard Barney Greengrass is totally overrated.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 15 March 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah. This explains the line of people covering two blocks of second avenue earlier today.

mouse, Monday, 15 March 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

eep.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 15 March 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the line is sort of excessive.

I vote Sarge's for great pastrami at reasonable prices.

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 15 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Barney Greengrass is not overrated at all! I think it's one of the best NYC food places out there, one of the few where it completely delivers on the whole oldtime New York food transaction fantasy. The sturgeon is just as good at Murray's and only slightly less good at Russ & Daughters, and it's the same price pretty much anywhere you go. Manna from heaven! Makes lox taste like cat food! And how about that endorsement from Groucho Marx above the door?
