So says Simon Baron-Cohen . Oh, and some of you might even be borderline autistic. Now go take apart some widgets or something.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 15 March 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

At the core of his thesis, he postulates that the natural wiring of the human brain tends either toward a capacity for empathy or toward one for understanding systems. He labels them E-type and S-type brains.

And guess who is what in Baron-Cohen's world?

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 15 March 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to scream really loudly right now.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 15 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

E-type and S-Type? Weren't they sixties Jaguar motor cars?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I read that article recently. In the guy's defense his book is called, Men, Women and the EXTREME Male Brain. Can't see how it would make anyone want to scream, but then I don't do well w/empathy.

It all sort of falls apart with the testosterone theory anyway.

(btw kerry how'd you run into the article?)

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I recall that very few people are ever supposed to have made it to Stage 6 of Lawrence Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development, otherwise known as the "Jesus-Gandhi-Kohlberg" stage.

Bnad, Monday, 15 March 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes men, give it up. You are hopeless. Release all your women into my custody immediately. I shall take over from here. Thanks.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I like motorbikes. Vrrooom. Vrooom.

andy, Monday, 15 March 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

btw kerry how'd you run into the article?

I often read the Chronicle, since it's relevant to my job.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotcha.

Sometimes I check aldaily which I think is now under the auspices of the chronicle now. Its a good website for catching random articles of interest though it is pretty blantantly pro-market in it's selections related to such things.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently chris and i are both "extreme type s." hooray for high-functioning autism!

Why Jeanne, you depraved despot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear Ali's getting married soon.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My autism is hindering my functioning of late. I would cry if I were capable of proper emotions.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't see why having more of a systematic approach to the world than an empathetic one makes anyone "hopeless" (although I do not see reason to believe that there is necessarily an inverse relationship between the two like the article implies). It's not saying anything bad about men, though, it may just be saying something false. Autism creates an *extremely* systematic and self-centered view, much more extreme than in any normally functioning man, and it's only harmful because it doesn't allow autistic people to function easily along with the rest of society.

cindy - jody - whoever you are! - my mom is positive that she can make a case for *anyone* having asperger's (at least, anyone in our family and most people she knows).

Maria (Maria), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to cry, but dammit, I can't! *punches wall*

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)
