Hi, Everybody. I'm having a sort of problem. I hope you might be able to help. I love where I live and the person I live with. I don't like my job or carpooling. I don't make enough at my job to give up carpooling (1 hour commute each way with someone I have gradually come to hate). I can't seem to find another job, let alone a job closer to home.

At one point I thought that I wanted a solid career (in publishing, which is what I do). Now I don't care. I want to love my house, my husband, AND my work. Is this possible in America today? Any suggestions, words of advice, commiseration, or pictures that just make you happy. I'd really appreciate it.

public transportation's out of the picture?

I would love your house and your work, but not your husband. Don't spread yourself too thin.

tell miss american idol that you're learning german on your commute and spend your time in the car with headphones on.

teeny, that is a wonderful idea! I just might try that.

If you can afford to shell out the cash, the Bose Noise-cancelling headphones are amazing. You can plug a walkman into them for spectacular sound, or just use them to cancel out all the "driving" noise. Then you really can learn German or listen to books on tape. Either way, you'll arrive much more relaxed. But, if you're not really learning german, you should still mumble things like "Weltanschauung" or "ich muss jetzt aufs Klo" or something to keep your driver partner off the scent.

How much cash are we talking?

I've been trying to learn French for years and can't seem to grasp it. I've heard that taking German or Spanish first is a better way to go. I have also heard that we use the same part of our brain to do math as we do to learn a language. If that's true then I'm screwed. I like the look of the headphones, though.

or, if you don't wanna shell out the cash for heavy-duty Bose, i'd also suggest Koss UR-20s. They're clamshells that I wear at work, and they keep me sane against all the other nattering approaching-middle-age surburban breeder-types who have weekly arguments over their cell phones at their desks with their (ex?) husbands and/or crotch-spawnlings.

oh, and the things cost about $20-25, at your local Best Buy.

This reminds me of the time I brought her to a FAP and she proceeded to chip away at my cool hardman image with a vicious feminine jackhammer.

it would take a spoon.

A TEFLON spoon.
