OK. I like to think I've got fairly sharp pop instincts but on this occasion you lot seem to have the better of me.

What on earth is so good about the Kylie single?

It's not just you either - it's the one pop record I've had requested at Sussed and not owned!

Tom, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Incessant pounding beat, sha-na-na-ing that you just can get out of your head. It managed to walk the tightrope of not being too simplistically catchy that you wear it out in your head, but being catchy and complex enopugh that each new hearing adds to the song. (Looped vocals are something I really cannot do using my head sequencer).

And there you have it: what Pete said. Classic pop tune innit? Though I like that Lisa Left-Eye Lopes song even better.

Omar, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, what Pete said. Plus I think there's a sense of relief or something that Kylie has finally made a great pop single without SAW - her previous number one was far less impressive, imho (can't even remember the title - the 'disco' one.)

The appeal of Kylie generally eludes me though so it's no surprise that it's still doing so. I mean it's nice enough and will get a solid 6 from me in the focus group but people seemed to be going mad for it.

Firstly Kylie is an exquisite babe and secondly, is there any better song out at the moment? The answer is NO.

toraneko, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a curious lull period at the moment...whereas normally singles now seem to top the charts for a week at best, this one stayed there for about four weeks, which is as long as I can recall any song being top of the UK charts this year (apart from Atomic Kitten IIRC).Of course how long a song tops the charts is no reflection on how good it is because that would imply that the new Kylie single is spectacularly superior to most of what's topped the charts this year - but then again, what #1 singles of this year have been better?

Damian, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not a fan of the song either. it *is* catchy, it *is* better than a lot of chart stuff right now, but it *isn't* grate. there have been better #1 singles this year. s-club, density's child and hearsay were all topper tunes. imh(and very laughable)o of course

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So Solid Crew's single was a masterpiece.

Tom, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Five's single was better too I think But the Kylie one is good. I think part of it is that most UK pop seems really characterless currently compared to the US stuff that we're keen when 'one of us' (well OK she's Australian but Britain seems to have adopted her as its pop princess) produces something quality.

Tom, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought it was alright, erm...is she on course to become another Madonna what with these constant reinventions? People seem to be worshipping her for this now (see that ITV show which showed all hyer vids a couple of weeks ago) but why? I don't think she's ever had the star quality of madonna, she's always just 'that one out of neighbours'. or have I missed something?

I thought this thread was going to be about my mum.

Ally C, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Man on a bike! Is your Mum called Sheila too?

Tom, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe because all the pop that's getting into the charts is either r&b or disco-flavoured house, and both of those tend to err on the side of overfulsome posing, musically and vocally. Which is not a bad thing, but the wasted performance and downbeat Moroder-esque production of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" sounds really quite distinctive in comparison. That and the fact that the video is neat, and the song was written by Cathy Dennis, which is cred you just can't knock. Oh, and because everything from her previous album was so uncompromisingly awful that a piece of dung on a stick would have seemed like a major improvement.

Tim, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom - no, she's called Barbara. I don't know why I posted really.

Well, ask a silly question.

Ally C, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nothing.

Geoff, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Like they awlwize say... what's good for the goooooossssee, is good for the gandah.... Oh Shayla!.... Unh!"

Whatever happened to Ready For The World?

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They weren't.

Kim, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was wrong about the Kylie single, sorry.
