Getting money back from the taxman

We were chatting in the pub last night, and the topic of tax rebates come up (as it does). Someone said that the form you get at the year end, you take that along to someone, and the tax man give you money back that they owe you.

Now, none of us knew REALLY what we were talking about, and since I can't remember what the form is that you get at the year end telling you how much you've earned is called (is it a P60?) Google turned up nothing at all.

Is this all a big lie, or can I really get cash from the taxman?

Your employer will do your P60 at the end of the year. If your tax code is found to be different to how you were taxed PAYE style, you will get
1) a bill for the shortfall, or
2) an arrangement on your next year's PAYE schedule, or
3) a nice cheque for the overpayment.

I got £1200 back last year. Which was nice...

You can indeed get tax back from "the man". I came home this past Saturday and received a letter from Inland Revenue containing a cheque for £144!

I wrote a letter a couple months ago with my P60 and another form (P45?) about my date of arrival in the UK (I'm from Canada but allowed to work here). I only worked part of the calendar year and earned well below the basic deductable, so I was entitled to my tax back. A pretty basic process, actually.

I would normally get back something, but the freelance work skews that. I have to calculate this weekend, hopefully won't be too bad.
