1976 was the best year of our lives

Science is here represented by some lefty economic think tank.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

what was the second best?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I was born in 1976! It all went downhill from there, really.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

year of my birth! year that Radio Birdman still existed!

(xpost)

Kingfish Cowboy (Kingfish), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked it. 1977 was better though. 1983 better still. 1987 was a drag though....

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Three years before I was born. Make of that what you will.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

five before me: this is getting ridiculous.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the most appallingly self-centred set of responses I have seen outside of the "I love myself" thread.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I certainly was younger then and had all my hair. I can say that for 1976. But I'd say it qualified more as the most confused year of all time, if you just judge it by my life - science be damned.

Aimless (Aimless), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

this science is for the UK only and doesn't factor in me or matt DC. who's self-centred?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

You were factored in and found wanting.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

All I really remember about 1976 is going to Philadelphia for the Bicentennial celebrations. It rained on July 4th. I was 9.

mike a, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

And everything was painted minuteman blue with white & red accents. You couldn't go 5 minutes without thinking of Betsy Ross.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I had the only life-threatening disease of my 30 years. I was 2.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Right. The "Bicentennial Minutes" on Saturday morning TV hyped us American kids up patriotic-style. And the Tall Ships were inexplicably popular.

Where were the Olympics that year?

mike a, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Summer was Montreal, winter was Innsbruck I think?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I was born during a thunderstorm in 1976, it was a hot summer. Might explain why I don't like hot weather much.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew it. I'm still looking for a time machine, you know.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

montreal is still paying off that olympic stadium! i hope you guys enjoyed it!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It brought Bruce Jenner fame and therefore helped in the making of Can't Stop the Music = it's worth every Canadian wampum buck you people are still paying for it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

the funny thing is that then-mayor jean drapeau said at the time that the city's going into debt was as likely as a man having a baby!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

he didn't count on JUNIOR!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

At 22, I got married to the girl of my dreams. What a great year. Well, for us, that is. Care to guess how long it lasted?

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yer still married?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. (Second girl of my dreams)

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

First one,5 yrs. Second One, 17 - so far!

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the year I was born...

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, though. If it weren't for the 80s being even nastier, I think many people would be even harsher about their memory of the late 70s. People of my parents' generation, anyway.

What do you think about all this quality of life measuring controversy?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Back to 76, tonight at the Chez Lounge

Live on stage:

Power Cuts
The Three Day Week
Howard Fucking Devoto

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

three day week's debut was in 1972 - not sure when it last performed though

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, google says 1974

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I was 6 months old at the start of 1976 so i'm not really in a position to judge whether it was the best year of my life or not.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The concept of a three day week makes me drool unbecomingly.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

until rent day

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

At the Bicentennial Picnic I won the sack race, my dad won the pie-eating contest and my little brother won the prize for the baby with the biggest ears. I loved that day. I was almost 10.

Maria D., Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I get paid such a pissy amount that the amount I'd lose out on would be less than almost everyone else, mwahahaha.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dazed and Confused is set in 1976, so it comes close, but happiest ever is a stretch.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's so tempting to make this thread S.I.L.E.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Spangles - POO

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What does S.I.L.E mean again?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

70s ILE, of course!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It may have been, for me.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 30 May 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, I look at that '76 chart above and think "there is something really vital missing here."
