Young people these days: classic or dud?

Dud. Their music is not as good, they're lumpen and they don't revolt and they can't spell. And they should cover up their midriffs, it's not a good look. I vote in favour of a reverse Logan's Run.

random person in his 30s (OK then, late 30s), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah well, screw you dad

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"This message will be repeated in ten years' time.*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm gonna show off my lumpish, hairy midsection whether you like it or not

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

They look fat too. Or is it just the unflattering fashions ..?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuckin' DUD! It should be remembered that I live right in the veritable CROTCH of NYU, and am thus subjected to the insufferable shenanigans of college students on a daily - nay, HOURLY - basis.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

and they're put there just to annoy YOU!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

too bad alex doesnt have a lawn to get infuriated over

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

though i bet he has a collection of hacky sacks and frisbees their owners will never see again

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought we had already established that the entire world was put there just to dishonor the fireannoy Alex?

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

and they're put there just to annoy YOU!

It certainly seems that way sometimes.

too bad alex doesnt have a lawn to get infuriated over

I will one day, and you best stay off of it, you chinless whipper-snapper!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

You have to be a skinny 17 year old to carry off the midriff look. Everyone else should cease and desist immediately, especially the men.

Hmmm, young people. Indiviudally, they can be very nice. But taken as a whole, they're the most useless young people since the invention of young people sometime in the mid-50s.

And that is scientifically proved, please don't argue, and close the thread now.

thirtysomething bore, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha hacky sacks

Once in high school the pottery teacher took away my friend Josh's hacky sack and later that week he asked for it back and she (a very chubbified hairy woman who I never once saw standing upright) reached down into the fuzzy crevice of her bra and VOILA there it was.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

?!?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey what happened to my strikethroughs?

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Do "kids" still kick hackey sacks around? I can't imagine a more dated activity.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm...I think the strikethroughs have been temporarily disabled due to someone trying to fuck with the code two days back. I asked Andrew to keep strikethroughs available, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

reached down into the fuzzy crevice of her bra and VOILA there it was.

Jesus, what a tale! What was the response? "Uhhhh.....actually, you can keep it!"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and to the young people upstairs from me, please stop playing your "techno music" at full volume at one o'clock in the fucking morning, can't you understand that some of us have thirtysomething lifestyles to attend to fuck yeah

thirtysomething bore, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually that was exactly what happened Alex.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That wasn't the only thing something like that happened though. Once I asked her for change for a dollar to get a soda out of the machine wot dispenses sodas and, not only did she reach down in there, but she asked me "do you want quarters?". Ew.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

er, only time. My grammar is fucked today.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you go to school in a Terry Gilliam movie?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait until the Great American TXT MSG Novel comes out... then we'll see what they really have to offer.

andy, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha Ned, not too far from it. This woman scooted around the halls on a rolling chair at breakneck paces. Our German teacher had an honest-to-Gawd mail-order-bride.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Now you just need Jonathan Pryce wandering the halls looking confused or Johnny Depp with a shaved head growling about bats.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

DUD!!!!! especially the KEXP DJ who played "Here Comes a Warm Jet" and then announced an X show "with John Doe and Xenia Cervenko". Kill 'em all, I say, strangle 'em with their hipster sweatbands

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure that the kids nowadays are alright, although it seems at times like they're all a bunch of spoiled, aimless punks. What shocked me was how little time it took to completely lose touch with the "youth". Observing teenagers from the vantage point of my late 20s, I'm at a complete loss to understand exactly what they're on about and I'm not entirely sure that I enjoy the feeling. Please don't let me turn into my father...

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think that the young of today show their midriffs nearly enough!

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

'specially the more rotund ones right?

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

hooray!

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the kids music seems WAY better now than a decade ago (back when I was a "kid"). there's a reason that of everything that came out in 1994, it's WEEZER that's getting the 2cd reissue treatment.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

they are quite squalid and uncouth

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't quite get over the exploitation of young people, though it happened to me in my day and I didn't seem to mind. This kid in the shop last Saturday night was getting only three quid something an hour, though he gets an extra third after ten. Kids who can't blag dosh off mummy and daddy have to grin and bear that sort of work - which includes dealing with abuse from drunks.

Bunged Out (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I love the way child labour is legally enshrined in Britain.

My first job was in a drugstore diner when I was 14. The chemist who ran the place spieled me about how lucky I was to be getting minimum wage because he didn't actually have to pay me that much as an under 16. My grandfather was sitting there having his daily coffee and asked him if statements like that made him feel proud, or just proud of being cheap.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the 'young people' I meet have zero opinions on current events, seem to tolerate the brand and endorsement culture and aren't nature's voters, exactly.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a bit confused about why the lugubrious teen music of today doesnt SOUND lugubrious

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

and i have a feeling upper middle class american teenage girls named dakota or chyenne would have terrified/disgusted/confused me at 16 as much as 26

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the 'young people' I meet have zero opinions on current events, seem to tolerate the brand and endorsement culture and aren't nature's voters, exactly.

this sounds familiar, but i did feel guilty about it a lot

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

to be honest i think i find the half-informed teenage armchair zealots even more annoying

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate the way that ALL tennagers today make unsupportable generalisations.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You must be this old to appreciate this thread.

Dr Dre/Robert De Niro/Sean Connery (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

young people are OK.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"young people be stupid!"

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

depends how young.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Young people are undeniably conservative and boring, compared to previous generations. The zeitgeist has moved up a decade.

Also, it were all fields round here when I were young.

thing 2, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Kids alright

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

young kids are classic

michael jackson (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a young person, these days. i am totally average and like my peers in almost every way.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What a searing indictment!

to pee or not to pee, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the kids haven't actually heard of Rick James, bitch

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Young people are undeniably conservative and boring, compared to previous generations."

OTM. Sadly.
