Does anyone else feel kind of weird getting tap water from a faucet other than the kitchen sink's? If my husband is using hot water in the kitchen I'll fill my cup from the bathroom sink, but it feels subtly wrong. Like the same feeling of disease you have when I'm in a car that doesn't have a seatbelt for the seat I'm sitting in.
― I X Love (Abbott), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, I have always felt this way, other than in one house that I occupied during or immediately after college when the bathroom sink water was the coldest and the best in the house.
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:13 (sixteen years ago)
i don't feel weird but i do think of it as being different water somehow. could be my sink was clogged for a while so it looked really dirty.i have a question about tap water though. why do you need filters (brita, etc.) for city tap water? i just realized i'm the only person that doesn't have one. my parents have a well and drink bottled water only, too.
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)
i feel like bathroom water is less cold in my house too but i don't think that's possible
I was recently told that tap water in Portland tastes like dead leaves. Tastes normal to me.
harbl: it depends on what city you live in. some cities' water is more drinkable than others'
― art crut (The Reverend), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)
maybe but i don't know if the filter would catch the stuff that makes it undrinkable! i'm gonna get alzheimers or something aren't i
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)
I think that it's less a function of the water and more a function of plumbing. We use a filter and can taste the difference probably because our building is oldish and the plumbing might be funky. Also sometimes the city water tastes too chlorine-y.
In the same town where the good bathroom sink water house was located, sometimes after a snow storm the water would taste salty, presumably from all of the street salt that got washed into the drains (that's just a theory; I have no idea how urban water treatment works but the water really did taste salty sometimes). It was gross.
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:17 (sixteen years ago)
i think i just get used to bad water and don't notice anymore :/
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)
That's good, though! When the revolution comes, all us water-filtering pansies are going to die of dehydration while you'll survive drinking stagnant water out of puddles.
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

The U.S. has one of the best standards in the world when it scomes to water cleanliness, you don't really need a Brita.

― she is writing about love (Jenny), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:36 (sixteen years ago)
Some of the chemicals that are excessive in Chicago's water include lead, chloroform, and two (2!) kinds of radium. Resolved: drink more beer.

Funny you should say that, Jenny -- I'm reading a book about taverns in the revolutionary era US and pretty much everyone at the time felt water was unsafe or only fit for horses, so it was all alcoholic beverages all the time. Apparently John Adams started each day with a mug of hard cider.

some people use brita because it makes the water taste better, it doesnt surprise me that you dont harbl, given that you have a long history, of having weird taste

Bottled water tastes v weird to me.
― I X Love (Abbott), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)
I really like this water filter because:
It is cheap. The filters are cheap. There are no moving parts so it doesn't break every three weeks. When you replace the filter, you replace the almost all the parts that the water runs through so you don't end up with a bunch of yicky stuff caked into the crevices.
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 21:36 (sixteen years ago)
isn't one of the concerns about tap water the trace amounts of pharmaceuticals that make it through the purification process
the brita has an active charcoal filter or some thing, catches all those organic compounds or whatever, plus it just tastes better

This times a million. I still have a Britta from college that I use so the water is extra fresh but there is no filter in it. There really isn't any need to filter tap water in the US and compared to how problematic clean water is in most of the world stressing over this is just laughable. If it's a matter of taste I guess that's different but I've never really tasted a difference tbh.
― ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:25 (sixteen years ago)
you can use yer brita to get rid of fluorite

yeah i don't stressat the same time i wouldn't compare it to the rest of the world and i think we have a lot of problems

it's hard to ban chemicals here compared to the EU and canada, for example
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:27 (sixteen years ago)
idk there was a big thing in the nyt about how polluted drinking water is - i have p much no facts other than stuff i read in a couple of article every now and then but im super skeptical about how well regulated/policed these things are
i mean i also kind of doubt that my brita filter is going to prevent me from getting cancer if the water is r contaminated but i still dont think it hurts
― AAAAAAH YAH ITS FUSION (Lamp), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:31 (sixteen years ago)
one filter costs like as much as a 6 pack but its good for like 3 months
― =皿= (dyao), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:33 (sixteen years ago)
can you really put a price on your health
i posted it earlier lampiestill something about drinking plain tap water, i feel like it makes me stronger and filterers are wimps, i might become a superperson if i don't get cancer
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:34 (sixteen years ago)
from the times article:
All told, more than 62 million Americans have been exposed since 2004 to drinking water that did not meet at least one commonly used government health guideline intended to help protect people from cancer or serious disease, according to an analysis by The Times of more than 19 million drinking-water test results from the District of Columbia and the 45 states that made data available.
harbl im even cheaper than u but srsly a brita + filters is really not that much money
― AAAAAAH YAH ITS FUSION (Lamp), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:36 (sixteen years ago)
it's not about money or anything, i was just wondering!ur not cheaper than me btw ; )

Harbl I didn't mean EU or Canada - I meant all those other places in the world where fiding potable water is such an issue that the act of doing so puts ppls lives at risk as much as driking the polluted water that is readily available to them. Basically worrying about our pretty damn clean tap water is a first world problem that really isn't that much of an issue in the whole scheme of things. Can filtered water hurt? Of course not but do I really think that it's necessary or that filtering tap water actually does that much? No, probably not.
― ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:38 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i know what you mean and i agree with you about people who worry about tap water!
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:41 (sixteen years ago)
i just think we have a long way to go is all. should be able to ban stuff, at least. maybe enforce some more laws.
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)
anyway if you live in an old building with old/rusty pipes it doesn't matter how good the purification plant is in your county

Oh yeah, I don't disagree with that point at all. Pretty sure I discussed that on some cosmetics/personal care products thread somewhere in regards to things like parabens etc. I just know ppl who do get really weird about their water filters and bottled water and imo that's pretty retarded. Like I said earlier though if your water tastes really funky then that might be a diff story but I really don't think health should be much of a concern re your tap water.
― ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:46 (sixteen years ago)
gonna continue being a man and not using a filter then :)

So bottled water vs. tap water is there really a difference? I know bottled water is clearer than my tap water, and it definitely tastes less metallic, but is it really all that much better for you?
