Why is "Dude, where's my ____ " so goddamned fucking funny?

I mean the phrase, not the movie.

Of course, it wasn't funny at all before the movie came out...

But after (what, like) 5 years or something, it's still kinda funny.

And is it more funny or less funny if you've actually seen that lame movie? (I only saw the last 1/2 hour, so maybe it isn't lame - but it seemed pretty fuckin' lame. Or was 1/2 hour just about the right amount to see?)

I think I laugh because it's become just the long form of "Dude". ..And because it isn't actually funny at all, but that's why it's funny.

Compare & contrast to "Well, isn't that special?" "You Look Mahvellous" or "It's just a flesh wound" (Optional spinoff thread: aren't you people sick of quoting the Holy Fucking Grail yet? - except for "We build a great, big, wooden badger.")

Dude, where's my thread?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite variation so far has been "dude, where's my SOUL?".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dude, where's my country" was pretty crap

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

we had a cultural event here a few years ago, while the film was still in theatres, called Dude Where's My Art?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember reading about a possible sequel called "Seriously Dude, Where's My Car?"

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, where's my....oh there it is

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey Man, wo ist mein Auto?"

I have been looking for a version of this film dubbed into German since it came out, just cos the title sounds so funny in translation. Anyone?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I thank you, Charlie.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

honestly, just try saying it in a dumb-ass overenthusiastic Ashton Kutcher voice...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, you spelled it wrong.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

dammit! well it's still pronounced the same...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost -- it's pronounced "eye man" rather than "Hey man", and you gotta leave the t off of "Ist" for maximum stoner effect.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I really liked this movie.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, where's my dignity

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

and you gotta leave the t off of "Ist" for maximum stoner effect.

well if yr gonna be picky..! the "t" in "ist" usually ends up silent in spoken German anyway. So ner. Kumm' Mi' nich' ann'e Pluenn!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, where's my virginity?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

..said Mary

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

so, phonetically (cuz I'm gonna say it on my radio show tonight): "Eye Mann...voe ees mine otto?"

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oww-toe?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

so named after the inventor got his toe ran over by his new, wheely invention

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks ken.

also, I just wanna go on record saying that no movie with Seann William Scott or whatever is entirely unwatchable. I like his energy. Not as much as say Owen Wilson's energy, but a similar sort of vibe.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly, as I've ruefully explained, I've not actually seen the German version. But your phonetic pronunciation looks about right - that said, I do disagree with Colin's assertion that "Ey" would be pronounced "Eye". Personally, I'd go for "Ehh".

So, to recap: "Ehh Mann, voe iss mine out-o?"

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

best thing SWS has been involved in is Road Trip

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't seen it either, but all the cool kids in Frankfurt say "eye".

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

haha have you watched the one with THE ROCK in it?? it's so shit it's unreal.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ich bin eine frankfurter!

aye man! (ken c), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't see Road Trip, but I did see the Rock one. Can't think of what it's called, but it wasn't much worse than BPM.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Doodoo, where's my kaka?

Little Baby, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the film was surprisingly funny

Dude, where's my dignity?

Colin Cooper, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

did he just say he was a donut?
i think he did!

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
The definitive origins of the phrase 'Dude, where's my car?' discovered!

In 'The Big Lebowski', the scene where Dude (Jeff Bridges), Walter (John Goodman) and Donny (Steve Buscemi) step into the parking lot of the bowling alley, and stand transfixed looking at the empty handicapped parking space. 'Dude, where's your car?' asks Walter.

And that's the end of that chapter!

So that Ashton Kutcher movie actually turns out to also be one of the worst homages ever, along with the worst so many other things ever. Great.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 10 April 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

You could say that.

de, Sunday, 11 April 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I was once met a girl briefly whose surname was "Dude" (pronounced "dudee"); she had a tough time in school.

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 11 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

Dude, Where's My Car? has the breezy, blissful wit of a top-shelf '40s cartoon. Its mystery is only exceeded by its power.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Friday, 1 January 2010 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

I genuinely can't remember if I've seen this film. Which seems kind of fitting.
