Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Looking mighty pale, there.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

give him some nice steak tartare and cheeseburgers, and let him re-submerge.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

better yet, put him on the atkins' diet.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"Had the decision belonged to Senator Kerry, Saddam Hussein would still be in power today in Iraq - in fact, Saddam Hussein would almost certainly still be in control of Kuwait," Mr Cheney said.

So, clairvoyance is another Cheney talent? Isn't it a bit too early to play search and destroy?

This makes Cheney look more like a whiny brat than a seasoned politician.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Will running a foreign policy line that amounts to "other nations can eat our fuc" backfire against the Republicans? How serious is the alleged Republican schism (represented so far by the conservative pundits who have begun heavily criticizing the Bush administration)?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Looking mighty pale, there.

Too many years hiding in the bowels of the earth under the White House, prolly.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

more fun from the LA Times here:

But not everyone blames Bush's problems solely on his political foes.

"No jobs are being created. They did not find weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq, said Eddie Mahe Jr., a veteran GOP strategist. "That provided the constant stream of attacks a level of credibility and legitimacy they otherwise might not have."

the difference being¿

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

On Wednesday, Bush traveled to Cleveland and defended his economic policies, mixing swipes at Kerry with expressions of sympathy for the roughly 225,000 Ohio workers who have lost jobs since he took office.

Again, a dollar short. Hard for the constituents to buy into the croc tears when you're struggling to keep your house after getting the pink slip. You'd need solid reasons to re-elect the guy whose policies went a long to making you hungry.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(meant "a long way", obv)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the difference being¿

True, but he should be able to hide the brattiness better by now. All those years in Washington should have taught him something. He's only making Kerry look even better.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

cheney always looks like that, since ever

Brezhnev to Cheney: "Breathe, my pasty comrade, breathe!"

andy, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

god i hate reading about this guy because it leaves me sick to my stomach, it's like pinochet, it's impossible to imagine anything that could happen to this guy that would satisfy my sense of justice

!!!! (amateurist), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm glad that i'm not the ONLY one who sees the similarities between bushco and stalinists like brezhnev.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF? You equate Cheney with Pinochet?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

This confirms it all..
Dick, Bush, N Colon at work for you.

Kayamaga (Kayamaga), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, they are ailing, pinch-nosed politicos, coughing in the gardens of dachas. But what's worse: we elected them.

andy, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

no i knew someone would say that

obv cheney isn't a former dictator responsible for the deaths of 1,000s of people

i just meant that the respective power and respectability of both persons (well, pinochet was respected by many and still by some) is just horribly offensive to my sense of the world as a place with any fairness

sorry if i offended you, honestly

!!!! (amateurist), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

that was in response to nichole

!!!! (amateurist), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

No worries. Not like I can stand Cheney, but I only wanted to check where you got that thought, as only Pinochet's death returned any sense of balance to the world.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheney might not have a lot of confidence in Kerry, but former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili does. He endorsed Kerry today.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray! Everyone chant three times:

"Endorsed by former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili!

Endorsed by former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili!

Endorsed by former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili!"

andy, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not certain about Shali's politics, but I note that he was a collegiate Young Republican who came up with the help of former Republican leader Bob Michel.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
He is talking right now in Missouri.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/politics/administration/whbriefing/

teeny (teeny), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

": "Cheney is expected to deliver a major address in Missouri today charging that Kerry's record shows he would be unsuitable to serve as commander in chief in an era that requires an unwavering leader who can recognize gathering threats and is willing to speak out against them, even when that is difficult or unpopular. Aides said Cheney will say the president must set a clear and consistent foreign policy, and support a military strong enough to use decisive power as a last resort. . . . "

teeny (teeny), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Kerry is being criticized for previously proposing cuts to military programs as to which Cheney also previously proposed cuts. Meanwhile, there seems to be too little money in the Defense budget to prevent our troops from being killed needlessly.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

tune in to rush for the 'highlights.'

teeny (teeny), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Very interesting take on Cheney from, of all people, his old friend John Perry Barlow.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The phrase "Cheney surfaces" makes me wish he was hiding in a Whack-a-Mole machine.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

There appears to be quite a lot of money available for this.

Vague ramblings about stuff I don't really know much about... If we take Barlow's take at face value, and presume that Cheney is rational (which doesn't necessarily follow), is the presumed approach a good one? It seems to me that playing madman and creating an enormous stockpile might succeed at suppressing symmetric threats, but wouldn't it just embolden asymmetric threateners? Does balance of power politics prevent them from developing? Al Qaeda was no fan of the Russians, of course, so it would seem not, but maybe a stronger Russian state would have finished off the mujahideen (who weren't exactly an impoverished people tied to a soil) or proxy wars would have kept them busy.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 26 April 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Would it be in bad form for Kerry to lift a campaign strategy from Ronald Reagan? (i.e. "Are you any better off today than you were four years ago?")

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think every candidate post-reagan has muttered that sentence at least once.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)
