"Vancouver — In a West Coast environmental saga replete with a Solomon-inspired subtext, the much-loved and endangered Vancouver Island marmot has been pitted against the majestic — though not quite so rare — golden eagle.

The B.C. government authorized the killing of six eagles because they were a threat to the marmots, whose numbers have dwindled to less than two dozen in the wild. The killings were authorized by the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection but never made public, a move that has riled B.C.'s scientific and conservation community."

I mean, it's cute, but c'mon...shooting eagles?

They should just give the marmots guns. Let nature take it's course.

Over the last few years there have been lots of cool stories about West Coast animals fighting back. For a while it seemed like there was an organized insurgence going on. I'll try to dig some up.

That is an idyllic marmot!

I told the Japanese exchange student in my class that I had a guinea pig. He'd never heard of them so I tried to describe them. "Like a marmot?" he said. "No, not entirely." So he looked it up on his little translator and said, "Used for scientific experiments?!?" totally appalled at me. :(
