And what does it signify to you? Mod-revival or neo-Nazi skinhead? Smart dresser or shit taste? Preppy or no? Or none of the above?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Nobhead".

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Damon Albarn".

Oh, sorry, xpost.

Strachey, Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I love them, smart and kinda stylish. I only have one at the moment - white with pale blue and brown stripes. But I have a trackie top which is brown with pale blue stripes down the arms too.

chris (chris), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wondering whether Albarn or Skinner would be mentioned first.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

erm, The Specials dude

chris (chris), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Did they wear them? I wasn't aware, somehow.

When I saw the Specials there were lots of skinheads in the crowd, and they were wearing Fred Perrys, but the Specials themselves were in white button-ups.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely pictures of them wearing Fred's somewhere.

chris (chris), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure there are a couple in evidence in the cover and sleeve photos for 'Specials' - Roddy Radiation is perhaps the chap wearing one most.

Jonnie, Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That old tennis player used to wear them. Whashisface?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Henri Lacoste?

chris (chris), Thursday, 18 March 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, that other bloke, Venus Williams.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 18 March 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

We'll be here all night ladies and gentlemen

(except I'm clearing out of here and down to the pub)

chris (chris), Thursday, 18 March 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm amazed how quick these went from classic to dud! When I first got into Fred Perrys, which was probably not too early in the revival but early enough, the only way you could get the good ones (3 button form-fitting ones, made in England) around here was by serious thrift-store combing--a real prize when you found one. I liked all the mod/early skin connotations that nobody ever knew about, and I liked how the bottom of the shirt was longer in the back than in the front to prevent it coming untucked whilst on the tennis court, and I liked how with polo shirts the notion of brand identification was so simply boiled down to little alligators or men on horses or laurels that entirely change the "identity" of otherwise identical garments.
But they became uncool so fast it boggles the mind. First I saw Ewan McGregor wearing one on the cover of Details, then Bloomingdales started stocking them, then the company launched that ghastly line of reproductions of vintage Fred Perrys (with the big ridgy brown laurel), and the next thing you knew every kid with a Paul Frank backpack had a Fred Perry warmup jacket that matched their sneakers. I don't have any anymore, but I still think the old 3-button numbers look pretty smart when I see them in a photo of the Jam or something.

Quadrophenia was on tonight and I have to admit that Phil Daniels was a good-looking fellow back in 1979! Made me lean toward a vote of "classic."

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I like them -- so sue me.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

roxy, were you watching the Speed channel?

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Not originally, but I saw the title as I as scrolling past and changed the channel and watched Quadrophenia. Nearly twice! And with way too many commercial breaks.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 May 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, my "Knobhead" post was first yet I'm totally thinking about buying one!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Saturday, 22 May 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame that Mike Skinner, innit.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Saturday, 22 May 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I spotted one of the new ones...from the "Japanese limited edition" line that I kinda dug. Bright orange with yellow trim (dubbed "sorbet"). Not exactly the type of thing you'd expect slackjawed Sham 69 fans to be sporting.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 May 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Incidentally, they shrink like hell if ya throw'em in a dryer. Hang'em up, don't machine-dry'em.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 May 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

alex, i never put t-shirts or shirts in a dryer! they always tend to shrink to barbie size if i accidently do.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 22 May 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

See, though, that's where you and I part -- I'm an idiot in the laundry room (I'm an idiot in many other rooms as well, but especially in the laundry room).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 May 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhat unfortunate:
