ADMIN: HTML tags and you...why some of your posts may be buggered up right now

There have been a few complaints on various threads and on some of the various ILX-related lists about stranger behaviour lately when you try to submit a post that contains angle brackets.

Basically, there have been a number of problems lately with people embedding things into threads that cause problem for a number of readers, or serve to just break the threads altogether using HTML majick. Because this was an ongoing problem, Andrew finally decided to strip the number of allowable HTML commands back to the basics:

<P> <BR> <A> <IMG> <B> <U> <I> <STRIKE> <BLOCKQUOTE>

Unfortunately, this means that the board will now strip out anything between angled brackets that isn't an allowed tag, which will cause problems if you're trying to use < or > to indicate less than or greater than in a mathematical formulation, or if you're writing a "joke" tag (ie. </DAN PERRY>).

Consequently, if you want to use < or > in a post for whatever reason, you will need to enter it using the same special codes HTML writers have to when displaying the characters. Yeah, it's annoying as hell, but you're actually learning a valuable skill! (You gotta look at the bright side of it, yes yes.)

&lt; = <

Any questions, please direct them here!

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Friday, 19 March 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for fixing the original post up Andrew. Make sure to put semicolons after the gt and lt in those codes, or it'll break on a buncha browsers! It's a small thing but it matters.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 19 March 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(It still says "gt" where you probably want it to say ">"

Right you are. Fixed! I had too many damn tags in one post and I knew I was gonna bork some stuff up. Practise makes perfect. It's fixed now.

lists?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(While I'm tempted to just answer "What?", I meant the mailing lists, specifically 12-ft Lizards, where this was just discussed yesterday.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What would have been good.
But I'm seeing only one list in that exchange. I've been a preoccupied with the move and all and didn't see how any of this majick. I'm not saying it was the wrong thing to do, but it just seems I'm missing something. What am I missing?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

>probably a pointless question.. what should i do if i actually wanted

>& g t ;

the html entity for 'ampersand' is '&amp;'

so for '&gt;' you'd need to write '&amp;gt;'

(which will almost certainly not render correctly because i've just had to escape the escaping, if you see what i mean - view source)

Yeah, it's just the one list in the immediate past, but we kicked it about a little bit on the mods list a while back when a few other embed issues were happening (if I recall correctly).

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even know what {p}{/p} does! Everybody's got to learn

sooner or later

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha okay paragraph right

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, the funny thing is, you rarely ever see a paragraph tag closed; people treat it much like a <BR> tag...just a simple one-off formatting choice, but in theory, the paragraph tags are supposed to go around each paragraph.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It would have helped if Graham's syntax checker had comments to go along with it.

oh wait, I was supposed to do that last month, um well, aahh, guess I don't have to get around to that now.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

mr noodles email me with the syntax checker code! i bet i could even say to my boss that i was doing it for work!

I think logical tags lost the battle to physical ones some time ago.
