ILX mentioned on Radio 2

Well, I Love Books anyway. This thread at least, (Summarise a Novel in 25 Words) and only the bits quoted in an article in the London Evening Standard.

But still! ILX recommended by Terry Wogan! Whatever next?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 March 2004 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

link?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm. I feel a wee but sorry for Rinkworks - they've done "Book A Minute" since the late 90s! :/

http://www.rinkworks.com/bookaminute/

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 March 2004 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Did the Evening Standard get permission to post those? And from whom?

This is but another sign that I Love Film has been a failed experiment!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2004 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

oh jesus, and it's all over the independent this morning too - well, a double page spread on the concept and not a mention of ILx, the lazy rotters

chris (chris), Friday, 19 March 2004 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

How weird. What's the big deal about summarizing books?

ENRQ (Enrique), Friday, 19 March 2004 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you read the thread? I think it's more the way they're being summarized, rather than the concept of summarizing itself.

oops (Oops), Friday, 19 March 2004 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh G, what have you done?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Crash by JG Ballard.
Screwing Elizabeth Taylor's gaping wounds in a wrecked automobile. Mmmmmm...

-- E (numbersix_9...), March 12th, 2004 11:37 AM. (later)

WTF?!!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not letting this go to my head, but I do want people to curtsey before they speak to me in future.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 19 March 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the point wherre I try to half inch a fully stacked dual zeon motherboard from work, isn't it?

Ed (dali), Friday, 19 March 2004 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This never happened to The Tragedie of Michael Jackson, King of Pop...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

here's the indy article
http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/books/features/story.jsp?story=502722

so bleedin' bad too. G you should sue

chris (chris), Friday, 19 March 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

What a tosspot. I bet he writes crossword clues for entertainment.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 19 March 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I am in awe. I dream of starting a viral interweb craze.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 19 March 2004 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought of it in the bath.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 19 March 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a bit weird - I mean the Guardian's been running (maybe it's stopped now, I dunno) the 'Digested Read, Digested' thing for years in the Editor section/page. That's basically the same thing.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy who invented Digested Read did the 'Judging Books by Cover' stuff for the Idler.

The 25 or Less hook is a good one, though.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Editor stopped a couple of years ago. It's very upsetting cos it means that you actually have to read the news bit of the paper now to sound authoritative in the pub of a weekend. most vexatious.

nickie (nickie), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Though the digested read thing still exists in another bit of the paper. They did a fantastically OTM precis of Alain de Botton's latest piece of toss the other day.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"The latest Internet craze" - it's not even like 380 posts is particularly long for an ILX circle-jerk...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

imagine if they picked up and reported and tried to imitate some of the genuine crazes.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I know the Editor stopped as a supplement, nickienoo, but it became a single page thing, no? And I think 'The digested read' was one of the things that stayed.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

YEah, it's on Mondays. Brilliantly bitchy. Criticism is best left anonymous: case in point the Alain de Botton. Because he has presumably powerful friends (how else did he wangle 2 hours of primetime in which to say 'money doesn't make you happy' and 'death comes to us all'?) everyone in named peices is up his ass. The anon digested read was one of the few things to properly call him out.

Strachey, Friday, 19 March 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Mondays. There seems to be an Editor page in the main news section on a Saturday too.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to remember the name of the journlist who does many of the digested reads. Education section bloke. Funny.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

AdB got a book deal straight after a double first at uni, and it is easy to forget how young he is. He is from an exceedingly posh family and I think his mum was the first wife of the guy who just got bounced out of ITV. His mum is also a massive contemporary art patron. Publishers, eh?

suzy (suzy), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

He's got a big shiny head too.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 19 March 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW what is a 'double first'? I think it means a first in first year exams plus first in finals. If you get a first in finals, then you got a 'first'. But I got a first in first year exams, and I didn't. Logical? I think not!

Strachey, Friday, 19 March 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a first in 2 subjects.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Wha'? No it's not. It's when you get a first in your Part I and Part II exams.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a first in 2 subjects.
-- Jarlr'mai (parker...), March 19th, 2004.

That would be misleading, as if you'd done double the work if you did 'English and History', for example. 'Double First' confers prestige of some -- it's better than just 'a first'.

Strachey, Friday, 19 March 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it?

Ahh sorry.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick is cock on. Though of course it can only apply to places where you have Part 1's and 2's.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Right. I said 'first year exams' [okay 'mods'] and 'finals'. Dunno if they are equivalent. I think they must be.

Strachey, Friday, 19 March 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No wonder ILX gets on Radio 2 with conversations like these.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique - you are entitled to say you got a first if you like, at least that's what the CUSU reckons:

One of the fringe benefits of the Tripos system is that the degree you end up with can be either your Part I or Part II - or both. This means that should you get a First for your Part I, you can say you have a First from Cambridge even if you get a Third in Part II (a Double First is when you get a First in Part I and Part II). The only problem is employers tend to ask for Finals marks.

(from http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/publications/altpro/faculties/learning.html)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but Mikey, now yer just pandering to your audience:

Describe a book to an eight year old in one sentence

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

'Tis true, Scott. I actually thought of that one first, but beer made my brain forget it for a while.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the true phenomena is how fast stuff gets linked to blogs from other blogs. that whole network thing. I followed all the links to that thread and it was really interesting to see where the chain started. Or try to find where it started anyway. It's like wildfire i tellya!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"double first" is an exceedingly misleading phrase. i'm sure most people think it means having done twice as much work.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

..and this ensures a constant stream of new people posting. Apart from about a dozen regulars, the rest of the posters are fairly new. Unless they're just Scott posting under different aliases. That crossed my mind.

x-post.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me say once again, if I have said it before, that I am opposed to publicity, for (for instance) ilx. I think this kind of thing is potentially catastrophic.

the bellefox, Friday, 19 March 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique - you are entitled to say you got a first if you like, at least that's what the CUSU reckons

I got a first! I got a first! Why am I on £6.50ph!?

Strachey, Friday, 19 March 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I am opposed to publicity, for (for instance) ilx. I think this kind of thing is potentially catastrophic.
Quite right. Whatever next, Metro quoting Tom Ewing? ;-)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Society as a whole is at risk. Wogan to blame.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

But the thing is, there is almost zero crossover to other threads from the people checking out/posting on the 25 words thread. They look at that thread and then leave. So I'm not that worried about it. I was a little worried when that Guardian thing mentioned it, but all my worrying was for nothing. I wouldn't mind if a handful of people ended up sticking around though after seeing that thread. That would be cool.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this have any connection with the 'too many connections' messages that have been popping up again quite a lot lately?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

accordint to http://ilx.wh3rd.net/log.php the telegraph page has directed 180 ppl in the last hour - doesn't seem like it would overload the server

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

JAY Z VS NAS IS GETTING JOBBED

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It pleases me that I Love Books is getting the attention it deserves.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

so the telegraph has a feature on it too?

chris (chris), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not even a particularly good thread after the first 50 or so posts...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it goes downhill after the first post.

journalists = lazy gits

chris (chris), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You're right. They should be going out into the streets and clawing stories from under paving stones with weights tied to their backs.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the fact that we now have definitive proof for what 'craze sweeping the interweb' means.

Chronologically speaking, who blew the gaff first? The subStandard? This useful if I wish to start interweb crazes in future.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ilx: interweb crazed.

..., Friday, 19 March 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was in the Guardian first.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck it, sell some ringtones. This place needs some sort of hideous online megamart attatched to it.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha.

So - Grauniad cover it; someone in Standard picks up ropey old copy and covers it, starting a feeding frenzy that takes in the Indy and the Torygraph, not to mention Wogan.

Anthony Sampson (daveb), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard someone talk about it on 5Live on the day the Guardian originally covered it

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

someone said it was featured in a recent issue of the trade publication, Bookseller. How sexy is that!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

This never happened to The Tragedie of Michael Jackson, King of Pop...

Yes, but I believe Brian Nemtusak, who used to post here, wrote something very similar for the Chicago Reader.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

someone said it was featured in a recent issue of the trade publication, Bookseller. How sexy is that!

Not very!

Strachey, Friday, 19 March 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It was in the Sunday Telegraph, with three examples excerpted, including mine (imagine my bloody shock)! In today's Independent (I just read whatever paper's left in the garage) there's a double page spread of novels summarised in 25 words, and it says it's the new internet craze. (Is it?)

I think all this goes to show is that newspapers and radio stations report each other's stories ad infinitum. Scott Seward should bloody well get royalites.

Bunged Out (Jake Proudlock), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Royalties, i mean.

Bunged Out (Jake Proudlock), Friday, 19 March 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Tico should. I'll take half of the profits from the t-shirt sales.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

You should do t-shirts.

Front: OMG
Back: WTF

etc

Strachey (Enrique), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooooo! I'll organise the street-teams. Stupid fucking decade.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I should check out I Love Books.

*thinks of the extra time this would eat up in turn*

I think I will steer clear for my sanity's sake.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I Love Horses is the next one to go mega. Article in the New York Times yesterday.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's slow today.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Still better than ile though.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dante/Aja Board was featured on NPR today.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

If that is not a joke I am walking into oncoming traffic.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Drastic but I understand the impulse.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 March 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry, it hasn't happened. Yet.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Zoo magazine has a feature on Calum.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

he is a cheeky monkey.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 March 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The thread is back in the Guardian today. G2 page 4.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Good grief - will they leave us alone?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh - that's by John Crace. He's the 'digested read' guy I was trying to remember the name of upthread.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

He calls Ottoman Jensen's Gravity's Rainbow "Sloth or entropy? Who can tell, really?" genius, because 'sloth or entropy' is an angram of Tyrone Slothrop. But didn't Pynchon engineer this himself?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The 25 words thread has gone downhill alarmingly. But I liked this one.

It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet - James Herriot
Young impressionable man happens upon idyllic area in an imaginary country called "England" - keeps putting his arm up cows' bums. Police disinterested because of "vet" defence.

-- John Billot (john.billo...), March 24th, 2004.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Nothing happens. Twice", is Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot.

But EVERYONE says this about Waiting For Godot. They haven't even linked to the thread itself, it goes straight through to the ILX front page. Cockfarmers.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 25 March 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm quite pleased with my contribution, but I felt a bit like I was on one of the Jay Z/Nas threads.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)
