When Animals Attack - Your Worst Animal Related Injury

I'm been bit by dogs and hamsters, stung by bees and bled dry by leeches... but it was my beloved yet cranky shetland pony that dig the greatest harm: head over heels into a roll of barbwire, after which she ran over me. I had a huge horseshoe print above by groin.

Have the beasts acted beastly towards you?

tripped over a dog while running down High St, late for work. not the dog's fault.

Calvin the pug scratched my face badly by accident, when he was a puppy.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Saturday, 20 March 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

My bulldog has played Warg with my foot many a time. And it has hurt.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Saturday, 20 March 2004 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst I've been hurt is massive bruising from falling off a horse. Thankfully she didn't step on me, nor was there barbed wire nearby.

But my sister was attacked & very seriously injured by a dog when she was 1 & I was 4. It was a dog we knew & had often played with - which is why now that I have a dog of my own, I took a lot of care to train him & watch him sooooo closely whenever he's near kids. I wouldn't go near any dogs for years after the attack- I love them now, but I still have to bite my tongue when I hear people say "Oh, Rover would never, ever bite someone."

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 20 March 2004 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

My cat used to be totally insane (well he's still insane, just not violently so) when I first got him and he bit both mine and my best friend's hand. Broke the skin and it got infected.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 March 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

wasp sting is the worst thats happened to me. shetland ponies are fucking evil. i've been scared of horses since i was 5, one of those wee fuckers bit me.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 20 March 2004 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

bitten by a dog which had its head sticking out between the bars of the gate of the house where it lived. I was about ten and it was only a little nip, but no-one believed me when I said it had happened! Any mention of Mrs G. (who was quite well known in the area as she did consumer/market research) in the ensuing years would lead me to pipe up "Her dog Rusty bit me!" to which one or other parent would respond "No he didn't" in a 'there-there' type of voice.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 20 March 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't been hurt badly by animals, but I've been chased by a herd of sheep. It was pretty scary.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 20 March 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to know a cat that attacked peoples heads all the time. I had a few close calls, but my worst animal injury is being bitten by some piece of shit baby. Maybe it smelt the fear?

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Saturday, 20 March 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a cracked vertebra from falling off a horse years ago. But my weirdest animal injury was when the cat stepped on my foot (I was barefoot, and for some reason her claws were out).

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 20 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Because my cat tends to run between your feet every time you go up or down the stairs, it's only a matter of time before there's a grisly accident at the Sean C household.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 21 March 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend nazi, bastard weiner dawg bit my thumb 30 years ago and I still have the scar. To be fair to the dog, the kids parents were also scum and most likely made the dog mean.

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Sunday, 21 March 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Toes scratch up by pet act trying to wake up to play.
2. Stung by bumblebee when I fell playing baseball and I landed on it.
3. Pinched by a crab when I tried to remove it from my fishing line. Probably my worst experience with pain.
4. Bitten by many fire ants in FLorida when I sat on a pile of them. I was about 3 years old at the time. Will never forget it.

Close calls:

1. Stared down by a wild boar in the rain forest.
2. Almost bitten by a horse who tried to steal an apple I was eating.
3. Scared shitless by a huge rat (had to have been the size of a pig) that walked (not ran) by me along a drainage ditch.

S- (sgh), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

back in '00 while opening a can of cat food to feed a stray cat, i sliced my left middle finger open on the lid. the cut was a nice C-shaped number going from the edge of my fingernail and about 1/3" underneath it. i came close to losing my fingertip.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 05:58 (nineteen years ago)

Attacked by two dogs whilst tripping on mushrooms on in the middle of nowhere on The Isle of Skye. They left me alone once I was off their turf outside their owners house but doing a 'Roger Daltrey with microphone' with my camera and strap saved me. I always imagined the owners peeking out the window thinking 'Ha, got another tourist'.
No physical injury but I'm sure I'm mentally scarred.
(ohmigod, is this it? is this how I'm GOING TO DIE?!!!?)

dr lulu (dr lulu), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 06:42 (nineteen years ago)

Wasp/bees. Well as I used to throw stones at nests so I probably deserved most of them. Didn’t deserve the one in the mouth though.

Dogs. Have been bitten through my thumbnail that was probably the most painful. Also have a nasty scar on leg from Staffordshire bull terrier.

Horses. Was thrown from a horse straight into a tree and knocked out.

And finally the lamest of animals but the one that caused the worst injury was a rabbit. The fluffy little fella seemed to think my finger was a carrot when I went to scratch its nose and bit the end off. Luckily enough it was still attached by a bit of skin so they could stitch it back.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:06 (nineteen years ago)

I fell off a horse just over a week ago. Ow it hurt. Ow it still hurts. Grrrrr, blasted animal.....

indolent girl (indolent girl), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 08:31 (nineteen years ago)

I was once chased down the field by a herd of sheep, but I managed to jump over the fence before they reached me. They probably wouldn't have done anything to me anyway, I just got scared 'cause suddenly there was a herd of sheep after me.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

That has happened to me a lot - they just think you might have food. But they always stop dead a few feet away in a quite amusing fashion.

I have been orribly stung by bees and wasps but nothing else.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

bitten by rats, dogs, squirrels, and cats. also lots of cat scratches.

fainted from a wasp sting once, while i was queing in the dole office.

was once caught in the middle of a stampede of bullocks, they were being herded by the (amateur doofus) farmer but they refused to go by the gate and escaped through the hedges. leading to about 30 of these beasts charging through the nearby fairground and all the neighbours back yards.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

I was heckled by a moon parrot.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

As a child of about 5 at a zoo (Scarborough, I think) a giraffe picked me up by wrapping its tongue round my arm while I was feeding it. According to my parents I got about 6ft in the air before they got me clear.

I don't like giraffes still.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

crikey!

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

That is amazing though! (Possibly not if happening to you.)

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

stung/bitten by dog, cat, horse, snake (a lot of these), lizard, hamster, rabbit, bees, wasps, guinea pig, vole, 3-year-old human.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

Stung by a yellowjacket defending its nest at the top of a playground fire pole I'd just climbed; subsequently fell from the top of the pole rather than sliding down. Tore up the tendons in my knees pretty badly.
